1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn the United States, rideshare drivers using a personal car should keep personal auto insurance in force, tell their insurer they drive for a transportation network company (TNC), and confirm in writing whether their policy covers rideshare work. Many personal policies exclude paid driving. A rideshare endorsement or hybrid policy may address some app-on coverage gaps, but the right protection depends on your state, insurer, platform, vehicle, and whether you need coverage for your own car or injuries. Check the platform’s current state-specific insurance certificate too.
Why a regular personal auto policy may not be enough
Personal auto policies commonly exclude livery or other commercial use, and state insurance guidance also warns that paid rideshare driving may not be covered under an ordinary policy. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) advises drivers to tell their insurer about TNC work and confirm how the policy applies. Read the actual policy and get the insurer’s answer rather than assuming coverage from the fact that you own and insure the car.

Coverage is not one blanket benefit for every moment you drive. Your personal policy, the TNC’s insurance, state law, and any rideshare endorsement can apply differently as a trip progresses. A TNC liability policy also does not necessarily cover damage to your car or your own injuries.

Check coverage at each stage of a trip
Compare your personal policy and the platform’s current state certificate phase by phase. The NAIC identifies the logged-in, waiting period as a particular potential gap; a platform certificate and your policy determine what applies in your circumstances.

| Driving phase | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Offline, app not in use | Your personal auto policy applies according to its terms. Keep the insurance required by your state in force. Uber’s insurance guidance describes its coverage by trip circumstances. |
| App on, waiting for a request | Ask whether the TNC provides liability coverage in this phase and whether your personal policy or an endorsement covers your vehicle, your injuries, and other protections you need. The NAIC flags this period as a possible coverage gap. |
| Request accepted; driving to pickup | Check the TNC certificate and your policy together. For damage to your own vehicle, Uber says repair coverage en route or during a trip depends on your own comprehensive and collision coverage. |
| Passenger in the vehicle | Verify the TNC liability limits and whether collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM), medical payments, or personal injury protection (PIP) apply to you and your vehicle. Requirements differ by state. |
For its current coverage by state and trip circumstance, Uber directs drivers to its insurance information and state certificates. Do not assume another platform has identical terms.

Personal auto policy with a rideshare endorsement
A rideshare endorsement may extend specified personal-auto coverage during some app-on periods. The covered phase and protections vary by insurer and policy. Ask specifically whether it covers waiting for a request, accepted trips, passenger trips, your vehicle, and your injuries. State Farm describes an endorsement that extends specified coverage while logged in and waiting, but excludes black-car and livery service; availability and terms depend on location and policy. See State Farm’s rideshare coverage explanation.

Ask these questions before driving
Get answers from both your insurer and the platform, and keep the current policy documents and certificate available.
- Does my personal policy permit paid rideshare driving, or must I add an endorsement or change policy type?
- Does the coverage apply to each app phase, including when I am logged in and waiting?
- Does it cover each platform I use? Is delivery work covered separately from passenger trips?
- For every phase, what liability, collision, comprehensive, UM/UIM, medical payments, or PIP coverage applies to me and my vehicle?
- Which deductibles apply, and does my personal policy help with any deductible under the TNC’s coverage?
- Is the TNC policy primary or excess for the phase and loss in question? Can the platform provide its current state certificate?
- If I use a commercially licensed vehicle, black car, or limousine, what commercial policy is required?
State rules and platform terms can change the answer
Texas
Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1954 says insurance maintained by or for a TNC driver must allow compensated use of a personal vehicle and cover the driver while logged on or engaged in a prearranged ride. The cited amendments took effect September 1, 2025. This is a Texas rule, not a nationwide coverage limit or prescription. Read Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1954.

California
The California Department of Insurance says TNCs approved by the California Public Utilities Commission are subject to a $1 million liability insurance requirement. Its notice also explains that this liability requirement does not require medical payments, comprehensive, collision, UM/UIM, or other optional coverage, leaving potential gaps for driver injuries, vehicle damage, and uninsured or underinsured motorists. The $1 million figure and those requirements are specific to the California context described by the department; do not apply them to another state. See the California Department of Insurance notice to TNC drivers.
Other states and platforms
Rules and policy terms differ beyond these examples. North Carolina’s Department of Insurance provides separate guidance for TNC and delivery-network driving, while Iowa’s Department of Transportation describes paid rideshare arrangements.
