The institute says it combines high-density and mobile EEG with eye tracking, and plans to make the facility available to internal and external research users. Its announcement describes equipment and intended research—not completed studies or results.
What is IIIT Hyderabad’s BrainLab?
BrainLab is an experimental cognitive neuroscience facility established with support from India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) through its Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure (DST-FIST) programme. IIIT Hyderabad says its Cognitive Science Lab received the grant in 2024 under the Life Sciences FIST programme.

EEG records electrical activity measured at the scalp. Channel counts indicate the number of recording channels named for each system; they are not, by themselves, evidence of research quality, accuracy or outcomes. The institute’s announcement provides no performance benchmarks or study results.
What research is BrainLab intended to support?
IIIT Hyderabad says BrainLab is intended for controlled experiments into how the human brain processes information, attention, perception and behaviour. Combining EEG with eye tracking is meant to let researchers examine brain activity alongside where a participant looks and pupil-based measures of attention. Compatible GSR sensors add another kind of recorded measure.

The institute lists cognitive science, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, language, perception, attention, learning and human-computer interaction among the areas the facility is expected to support. It also says researchers aim to generate original datasets from Indian populations rather than relying primarily on data collected elsewhere. These are intended uses and aims; the announcement does not report completed experiments, participant numbers or findings.
Who can use BrainLab, and how will access work?
IIIT Hyderabad describes BrainLab as a shared facility for its faculty and students, as well as startups, industry and external research groups. The institute says access will involve a charge to cover consumables and maintenance.

As of the 6 October 2026 announcement, the institute had not provided an access fee, application process, eligibility criteria or opening date, saying details would be posted later. The announcement also does not specify participant recruitment arrangements, ethics-review procedures, consent requirements or data-governance policies. Those operational details should not be inferred from the equipment description.

The institute says it is planning courses, workshops and summer schools. It scheduled BrainLab’s first workshop for 10–11 December 2026 as part of the pre-conference activities of the Annual Conference of Cognitive Science 2026. As of 7 October 2026, that workshop was planned, not yet held.

IIIT Hyderabad describes BrainLab as an initial step in a broader expansion of experimental cognitive science infrastructure. It says facilities for neuromodulation and sleep research are under consideration; these are future possibilities, not facilities confirmed as available now.

Who is leading the facility?
The grant-winning team named by IIIT Hyderabad comprises Prof. Bapi Raju, Dr. Vishnu Sreekumar, Dr. Bhaktee Dongaonkar, Dr. Vinoo Alluri, Dr. Priyanka Srivastava and Dr. Kavita Vemuri. The institute identifies Raju as Head of the Cognitive Science Lab and Sreekumar as faculty in-charge of BrainLab.
In the institute’s announcement, Sreekumar said the facility would help researchers generate data from Indian populations and create opportunities for interdisciplinary research across cognitive science, neuroscience and technology. Raju said that, to the Centre’s knowledge, the award was the first FIST-LS award for a Cognitive Science proposal. That “first” description is the Centre’s own qualified characterization, not an independently verified distinction.
