It could still send page content or actions to a cloud model, and it might be able to access far more than the tab you are looking at. “In the browser” describes where you interact with the agent—not, by itself, where its model runs, what data it transmits, or how much of your account it can reach.
To judge what an agent can see and do, separate three parts: the model or planner that decides what to do, the control channel that carries browser actions and observations, and the browser environment where pages and session data live. Those parts can run in different places.

What does “never left the browser” actually mean?
An agent can operate through a browser without all of its components running on your computer. It might control your existing browser, use a separate browser installed locally, or act inside a browser hosted by a provider. The model that interprets a page and chooses an action may be local or remote; the browser location alone does not answer that question.
This distinction matters because the browser is not just a window onto a website. It may hold logged-in sessions, cookies, and other stored data. Meanwhile, the page content and actions the agent handles may travel through a separate control service or to a model provider. You need to know which component handles each kind of data.

What can an agent see in a personal browser?
Connecting an agent to your everyday profile can give it access beyond the visible page. Chrome’s documentation for its DevTools agent auto-connect feature lists open tabs, cookies, local storage, session storage, and other data exposed through JavaScript APIs as accessible when auto-connect is active. That can make an existing logged-in workflow convenient, but it also means your profile’s authenticated state may be within reach.
Chrome says its DevTools for agents server is a local process and does not send browser data, session tokens, or telemetry to Google. That statement applies to the DevTools server—not automatically to the connected agent, model provider, or any other service in the workflow. Check each component’s data handling separately.

Chrome’s documented auto-connect setup requires Chrome 144 or later, enabling remote debugging, and configuring the MCP server with an auto-connect flag. See Chrome’s auto-connect documentation for the current setup and access details.

Where does the browser session run?
Browser-agent arrangements vary. Some work with a local browser; others host the browser remotely. A hosted browser can separate an automated task from your everyday profile, but it changes where the session runs and may involve transferring authentication data.

| Arrangement | What runs where | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Agent connected to your existing local profile | The browser and profile are on your device; the model or other agent components may run elsewhere. | Useful when the task depends on your existing logged-in session, but profile data may be accessible to the connected agent. |
| Isolated local browser | The browser runs locally in a separate environment; the agent’s model or control service may still be remote. | Separates the task from your everyday profile, though it may not have the accounts or session state the task needs. |
| Provider-hosted browser | The browser runs in a provider’s environment; the model may also be hosted there or handled separately. | Moves the browser session off your device. Signing in or syncing profile data may be required, depending on the service. |
These are architectural patterns, not guarantees about any product’s privacy or safety. A local browser does not prove that inference is local, and a hosted browser does not establish what the provider retains or who can access session data.
Examples in current documentation
OpenAI’s computer-use API documentation describes an Agents API arrangement in which the browser runs in an OpenAI-hosted environment. The application starts the session and follows its events. That is browser interaction, but it is not the same as attaching an agent to the user’s already-open local profile. Details are in the OpenAI computer-use documentation.

Browser Use documents a hosted cloud option, a CLI, and an open-source Python library. Its CLI and library can connect to a local or cloud browser, while its hosted API runs both the agent and browser. Its documentation says cloud profile sync transfers cookies, but not local storage, IndexedDB, or extensions; some sites may therefore require signing in again. The Python library is MIT-licensed, while model inference and hosted browsers may involve separate usage charges. See the Browser Use repository for its current options and terms.
Can a webpage trick the agent?
Yes. A page is untrusted input: it can contain instructions that try to override the user’s request or persuade an agent to reveal information or take an unsafe action. An agent that reads page text and can act on a logged-in session creates a meaningful security boundary to examine, not a reason to assume the page is trustworthy.

A 2025 paper by Mykyta Mudryi, Markiyan Chaklosh, and Grzegorz Wójcik, The Hidden Dangers of Browsing AI Agents, reports a white-box analysis of Browser Use. It describes prompt injection, a domain-validation bypass, and credential exfiltration under the paper’s examined system and threat model. The authors propose defense in depth, including input sanitization, separating planner and executor, formal analyzers, and session safeguards. These findings are a case study of a specific system, not proof that every browser agent has the same vulnerabilities. Read the paper on arXiv.
The 2025 AI Agent Index reports that 2 of 5 browser agents had documented prompt-injection vulnerabilities. The index also says documented security incidents in its reviewed set concentrate in browser agents and relate to prompt injection. This is a finding about the index’s sample, not a prevalence estimate for every product or a measurement of current risk across the whole market. The index appears in FAccT ’26 proceedings, held June 25–28, 2026; see the 2025 AI Agent Index.
How to assess a browser agent before connecting an account
Evaluate the whole data path and the actions the agent is allowed to take. Product features and permission models change, so rely on current, product-specific documentation rather than the label “local,” “private,” or “in-browser.”
Recommended Free Tools
- Browser location: Does the agent use your existing profile, an isolated local browser, or a provider-hosted browser?
- Data access: Can it read only the current page, or also tabs, cookies, storage, and authenticated sessions?
- Data routing: Which components process page content and browser observations? What reaches the model provider, agent application, and browser host?
- Credentials: Do credentials remain in a browser profile, get synced, get supplied separately, or get requested during a task?
- Action controls: Can you review or approve purchases, messages, account changes, or other consequential actions before they happen? The product sources described here do not establish a comprehensive cross-vendor comparison of approval controls.
- Untrusted-page defenses: How does the system handle prompt injection, distinguish page content from instructions, and restrict domains or tools?
- Operational fit: Does the task require your personal logged-in session, or can it be completed in an isolated browser?
The right setup depends on the task. An existing profile may be convenient when the agent needs your session; an isolated or hosted browser may better separate the task from your everyday profile, but may require a separate sign-in or profile-sync process. Neither arrangement is categorically safer without evidence about its particular data flows and controls.
