What If Console Makers Re-Released Old Systems Instead of Selling New Ones?

Old-console rereleases range from fixed-library minis to cartridge-compatible hardware. Here’s what those products offer, and why they do not yet prove a cheaper replacement for new consoles.

Re-releasing old consoles could give players a lower-complexity way to revisit classic games, but it is not a proven replacement for new systems—and “re-release” can mean very different things. Some products are small devices with a fixed, preloaded game library; others, like Atari’s 2600+, are designed to play original cartridges. The examples show that companies have made both kinds. They do not show that rereleases would be cheaper to make, more profitable, or a substitute for a new console. The claim that new consoles are generally selling for $1,000 or more also needs a specific model, region, and current price to assess.

What does it mean to re-release an old console?

It can mean anything from a compact replica that runs a selected set of games to updated hardware that accepts original cartridges. Those options serve different purposes: a fixed-library system is straightforward if its included games are what you want, while cartridge compatibility matters if you already own games or want to use original media.

Official products illustrate the distinction. Nintendo’s Classic Mini SNES is a smaller version of its 1990s system, and Nintendo’s UK product page lists two wired controllers and 20 classic games (Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System). Atari says its Atari 2600+ plays Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and includes a 10-in-1 cartridge.

How the main rerelease formats compare

Example Game access What the cited source establishes
Nintendo Classic Mini SNES Fixed preloaded library Nintendo UK lists 20 classic games and two wired controllers. Nintendo Support says additional games cannot be downloaded to the NES Classic Edition or Super NES Classic Edition, and those systems do not support external storage (Nintendo Support).
SEGA Genesis Mini 2 Fixed preloaded library SEGA lists 60 classic titles and one bonus game that had not been released before (SEGA Genesis Mini 2).
PlayStation Classic Fixed preloaded library Sony announced 20 pre-installed games in 2018. Its FAQ describes a unit smaller than a PS4 game case, official PlayStation Classic controllers, and a USB power source of at least 5V, 1.0A (PlayStation Classic FAQ).
Atari 2600+ Original cartridges plus included cartridge Atari says it plays Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and includes a 10-in-1 cartridge (Atari product page).

These examples are not interchangeable. A fixed catalog trades flexibility for a curated selection, and the games available depend on the particular model and region. Cartridge compatibility is a different proposition: it can make an existing collection useful, but it does not mean every old game format or accessory is supported. Check the specific system’s compatibility information before treating “plays old games” as a blanket promise.

Would rereleases solve the $1,000 console problem?

Not on the evidence available here. The cited sources do not establish that new consoles commonly cost $1,000 or more. Sony’s 2018 announcement for the PlayStation Classic gave launch MSRPs of $99 in North America, €99 in Europe, and ¥9,980 in Japan; these are historical prices for that miniature product, not current prices for new consoles or today’s prices for the Classic (Sony announcement, 2018).

To judge a current price claim, identify the exact console, country, date, and whether the figure is for the console alone or a bundle. A price for a particular retailer bundle or a hard-to-find discontinued product is not automatically the normal price of a new console. The cited material does not provide current comparable prices for new systems or current resale prices for discontinued mini consoles.

Even if an old-system rerelease costs less to buy, that would not by itself prove it is cheaper to develop or operate. The evidence cited here contains no comparable manufacturing, licensing, support, or profit figures for rereleases and new platforms. A lower-cost product might be possible, but claiming that it would reliably undercut new hardware or earn companies more money would go beyond what these examples establish.

What players might gain—and what they give up

When a fixed-library mini makes sense

A mini is appealing when its included games are the main attraction and the buyer wants a compact, self-contained product. The trade-off is that the catalog is set. For Nintendo’s NES and Super NES Classic Editions, Nintendo Support explicitly says users cannot add games by download and cannot use external storage. That limitation should shape the buying decision, especially for someone expecting an expandable library.

When cartridge compatibility matters

A cartridge-compatible rerelease can be more useful to someone who already owns games for the supported systems. Atari’s description of the 2600+ establishes compatibility with Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges, but that claim should be read narrowly as support for those named formats—not as evidence that every cartridge, peripheral, or original-console feature works.

When the replica itself is the point

Some buyers may want a small replica as a collectible or a convenient way to revisit a particular era. That is a different value judgment from comparing performance or total library size with a modern console. The cited product pages document hardware and catalog features; they do not measure buyers’ preferences or satisfaction.

Why companies have not simply replaced new consoles with old ones

The existence of official mini systems and cartridge-compatible hardware shows that rereleases are a real product category, not that they can replace the business of building new platforms. The cited material does not establish the size of consumer demand or provide independent sales figures for the category. The Entertainment Software Association’s 2024 filing in a U.S. Copyright Office proceeding refers to commercial retro offerings, but it is a stakeholder submission, not an independent market-size measure (ESA filing, 2024).

Rereleases also answer a narrower need: access to a selected group of older games or compatibility with particular legacy media. They do not, by themselves, offer the capabilities, game releases, or services of a current platform. Whether a company should make one depends on factors the available product examples do not quantify, including rights to the games, hardware and software costs, supply, and expected sales.

How to judge a rerelease before buying

  • Check the game list. Count alone is not enough; confirm that the titles you want are included and that the listing applies to your region.
  • Confirm the format. Determine whether the device has a fixed library or supports the original cartridges you own.
  • Verify the accessories and connections. Check controller inclusion, display connections, and power requirements for the exact model. Sony’s PlayStation Classic FAQ, for example, specifies a USB power source of at least 5V, 1.0A.
  • Compare current prices locally. Use prices for the same region and date, and distinguish a current listing from an old launch MSRP or a resale listing.
  • Match the product to your goal. A preloaded mini, cartridge-compatible device, and modern console are different purchases; compare them on the games and functions you actually need.
