What it can do is keep selected information in a persistent store, retrieve relevant pieces for a later conversation, and update or delete them as needed. Building that well is a memory-design problem as much as a model problem.
What “never forgot” can—and cannot—mean
In a real assistant, “infinite memory” is a useful thought experiment, not an engineering property. The model has a finite context window: only a bounded amount of information can be considered during a particular response. To create continuity across sessions, a system stores information outside that window and assembles a request-specific context when it is useful.

That makes persistent memory different from perfect recall. The assistant must decide what to retain, where to keep it, which records apply to the current request, whether they are still accurate, and when to forget them. The model context is temporary working material; the persistent store is an addressable source from which that working context can be assembled. As Microsoft’s multi-agent reference architecture puts it, “LTM is not a transcript archive and it is not a knowledge base.”
How an assistant’s memory should work
A reliable system treats memory as a lifecycle, not a switch that turns on permanent logging.

1. Select what is worth remembering
Useful candidates include durable preferences, recurring project facts, decisions that will matter later, and patterns that helped resolve a problem. A write can be triggered by an explicit request—“remember that I prefer concise summaries”—or by repeated, consistent signals. A single passing remark is weaker evidence.
Do not automatically retain every conversation detail. Microsoft’s engineering guidance cautions against storing unrequested sensitive facts, secrets, information already maintained in an authoritative system, and low-value conversational details. Selective memory is easier to retrieve, safer to govern, and less likely to confuse an old passing statement with a lasting preference.
2. Store the fact with its type and context
Different memories serve different purposes. A compact profile might hold a stable preference; an episodic record can capture what happened in a particular conversation or project; a procedural record can preserve a workflow that worked. Keeping these types distinct helps retrieval find the right kind of information rather than presenting an undifferentiated pile of notes.
Each record should carry enough metadata to interpret and govern it: the subject and scope it applies to, its source, confidence, timestamps, version, sensitivity, and an expiry where policy requires one. For example, a project decision should not silently become a user-wide preference. Provenance—the source and timing of a record—also lets the assistant explain why it believes something and recognize when a newer statement supersedes an older one.
3. Consolidate, correct, and update
Repeated statements can create duplicates, while changed circumstances can make a once-accurate fact stale. A consolidation step can merge redundant records while preserving details that affect meaning, such as when a preference changed or which project a decision concerned. Updates should resolve conflicts deliberately rather than simply appending every new version.

One proposed organization uses short-, mid-, and long-term tiers, with separate modules for storage, updating, retrieval, and generation. The value of tiers is operational: recent conversation context can be handled differently from compact, durable knowledge or a larger history that is searched only when needed. They do not remove the need for provenance or conflict handling.
4. Retrieve only what applies
When a request arrives, the system should search for relevant records and supply only the material that fits the question, user, project, and channel. Semantic memory can stay compact; episodic history can grow and be searched on demand. Indexing, retrieval, and reading are separate tasks: finding a likely record does not guarantee the system interpreted it correctly.
Metadata filters help enforce scope and sensitivity before a record reaches the model. A graph structure may help when the assistant needs to traverse relationships among people, projects, decisions, and events, but Microsoft presents graphs as a later-stage option—not a universal prerequisite. A simpler store and retrieval approach may be more appropriate when relationship traversal is not needed.
5. Use memory as evidence, not unquestionable truth
A retrieved note can be outdated, incomplete, or wrong. The assistant should preserve uncertainty, distinguish remembered information from current user input, ask for clarification when records conflict, and abstain when it cannot support a claimed recollection. This is especially important for dates, changing preferences, and facts whose source matters.
6. Expire or delete records when appropriate
Memory needs rules for reinforcement, decay, expiry, and deletion. Microsoft’s guidance describes policy-driven deletion, expiry enforcement, purge jobs, and periodic hygiene reviews. A deletion flow needs to account not just for a visible record but also for indexes and derived summaries that could reproduce it later.

What the benchmark evidence says—and does not say
A long context window or a large memory store is not proof of dependable memory. The cited results below come from distinct evaluations with different tasks and setups; they are not directly comparable production forecasts.

| LongMemEval authors, 2025; 500 questions embedded in chat histories, testing extraction, multi-session reasoning, temporal reasoning, knowledge updates, and abstention | Commercial assistants and long-context LLMs showed a 30% accuracy drop on memorizing information across sustained interactions in this benchmark. | A finding for the benchmark, not a universal estimate of how every assistant will perform. |
| MemoryOS authors, EMNLP 2025; hierarchical short-, mid-, and long-term memory evaluated on LoCoMo using GPT-4o-mini | Reported average gains of 48.36% on F1 and 46.18% on BLEU-1 over baselines. | Results for the paper’s system and setup; they do not guarantee similar gains in another application. |
| Microsoft Research authors, 2026; deduplication-based consolidation on a VSCode issue-tracking dataset of 13,000 issues and 120,000 events | Reported 97.2% retention precision with a 58% reduction in store size. | Specific to the described issue-tracking evaluation. |
| Microsoft Research authors, 2026; LongMemEval personal-chat benchmark at a 200,000-token context budget | Reported raw retrieval accuracy of 70.1% versus 71.2%, with overlapping 95% confidence intervals. | The reported intervals overlap; the figures do not establish a reliable difference in this comparison. |
| Microsoft Research authors, 2026; preference recall at a 50-session scale | Reported a 13.3 percentage-point improvement from deduplication-based consolidation. | A result for the stated evaluation and method, not a general production expectation. |
Together, these evaluations suggest why memory design needs to address retrieval, consolidation, updates, and abstention—not just storage capacity. They do not establish that any one architecture will work equally well across applications.
How to test whether the assistant remembers well
Test the complete behavior, including whether the assistant refrains from claiming a memory it cannot support. A practical evaluation set should include:
- A preference or decision stated in one session and queried in a later session.
- A fact that changes, to check whether newer evidence updates or supersedes the older record.
- Events with dates, to test temporal ordering and whether the assistant attaches a statement to the right time.
- A question for which no supporting memory exists, to see whether the assistant abstains instead of inventing a recollection.
- Similar requests across users, projects, or channels, to detect memory leaking across scope boundaries.
- Information that has been deleted or expired, to verify it no longer appears in indexes or derived summaries.
- Answer-quality comparisons with and without retrieval, weighed against retrieval latency, storage growth, and the tokens needed to pass memory into the model.
Track results by question type and scope. A single aggregate score can conceal a system that recalls preferences but mishandles changes, or one that answers more questions while making more unsupported claims.

Set a 15, 30, or 60-minute sleep timer and the sound fades out by itself. Want a different library? Connect it to any PC with the included USB-C cable and swap out every sound stored on the device.
- Prompt injection in stored content: a remembered passage may contain instructions intended to manipulate a later response.
- Memory poisoning: someone may deliberately insert misleading information that the system then treats as a trusted recollection.
- Context collapse: information from one domain or channel may be reused in another where it does not belong.
- Misleading summaries: a summary may hallucinate or distort what the original conversation established.
- Retention beyond policy: records may remain available after their intended expiry unless deletion is actively enforced.
Treat stored content as untrusted input, validate writes, retain provenance, enforce scope boundaries as retrieval filters, and automate expiry and deletion. These are engineering recommendations, not a universal legal checklist.
User controls should make memory visible and correctable, allow deletion, and offer temporary or no-write interactions where appropriate. The interface should explain what is remembered, what it applies to, and who or what can use it. Sensitive information should not be retained without clear intent.
A vendor-described encrypted design
In a September 23, 2026 post, Google DeepMind described a proposed persistent cross-device memory layer for Private AI Compute. Google says the information is encrypted, with keys held on user devices, and describes authenticated encrypted channels and secure cloud enclaves that decrypt data temporarily for a request and re-encrypt new context afterward. The company also says it is publishing technical material and independent audit results. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its design; the post itself is not independent validation of the guarantees.
Choosing an implementation without chasing “infinite” storage
For an implementation example, Microsoft names Azure AI Search and Azure Cosmos DB vector search as infrastructure options for memory retrieval. Those are examples, not requirements: the architecture decision should follow the information being stored, needed retrieval behavior, privacy boundaries, and operating constraints.
Compare designs by what they do in practice: recall quality across sessions and question types; handling of temporal changes and abstention; organization and conflict resolution; storage growth, retrieval latency, and context-token cost; scope isolation; traceability; and whether users can correct, expire, or delete records. A design that stores more can still perform worse if it retrieves irrelevant, stale, or out-of-scope material.
