On March 10, 2025, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) certified two related components: the Open Home Foundation Matter Server, which communicates with Matter devices, and Home Assistant as a “User Interface Component,” which may display the Matter trademark. The distinction matters: certification recognizes the implementation, but it does not by itself add device support or change how Matter setup works.
What did the CSA certify?
In its March 10, 2025 announcement, Home Assistant described separate certifications for the Matter Server and Home Assistant’s user interface. The project said the server certification means it properly connects and communicates with Matter devices; Home Assistant’s certification covers its UI-component role and use of the Matter trademark. Home Assistant’s announcement explains that keeping these roles separate lets the server remain independently certified, rather than requiring Home Assistant to be recertified for every update. The Matter Server consequently remains a separate app or add-on, rather than being built into Home Assistant Core.

Home Assistant said certification would not change the user experience in itself. Its stated benefits were a visible certification mark, recognition for the open-source implementation, and access to pretesting devices and SDK revisions. That is a credibility and development benefit—not a guarantee that every Matter device or feature works in Home Assistant.

What you need for setup
- The Home Assistant Matter integration and a compatible Matter device with its QR code or numeric setup code.
- A current Home Assistant Companion app on a phone, with Bluetooth enabled for commissioning.
- A network path for the device: Wi-Fi devices use Wi-Fi; Thread devices need a Thread border router.
The Home Assistant guide names OpenThread options including Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1 and ZBT-2, with their use dependent on the documented OpenThread setup. The official Matter app is not supported on 32-bit platforms. Check the live integration guide for current requirements before buying hardware or changing an installation.
Check the device’s transport and Matter support
Matter uses Bluetooth Low Energy for setup, then Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet for device connectivity, according to the CSA’s Matter FAQ. A Matter logo alone does not tell you whether a device uses Thread or Wi-Fi; check the transport logo and the manufacturer’s setup requirements as well. A Thread device needs a Thread border router, while a Wi-Fi Matter device does not need one merely because it uses Matter.

Will Matter let you control devices locally?
Matter can enable control without a manufacturer’s cloud service, but local control does not remove every vendor dependency. Home Assistant’s documentation notes that some manufacturers may require an account to enable Matter. Actual behavior depends on the device and setup, so check whether account creation or cloud access is needed before choosing a product.

Can Home Assistant share a device already paired to Apple Home or Google Home?
A Matter device already commissioned to another Matter controller can be shared with Home Assistant, allowing both platforms to control it. The process depends on the device and the other controller’s sharing workflow; certification does not change those steps.
Home Assistant can also connect to some Matter bridges. Its documentation gives Aqara Hub M2, SwitchBot Hub 2, Ikea Dirigera, and Philips Hue Bridge as examples. A bridge may expose only some of the underlying devices or capabilities: Home Assistant specifically warns that a Hue setup connected through Matter can offer fewer features than its native integration, and that not every device in a bridged ecosystem is guaranteed to appear. Using Home Assistant as a Matter controller also does not turn existing Home Assistant devices into Matter devices.

How to judge whether a Matter device will work for you
Before buying or pairing a device, check the details that certification alone cannot answer:
Quick Recap
- Transport: Is the device Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet? For Thread, do you already have a compatible border router?
- Device type and features: Does Home Assistant support the exact product category and the functions you expect? A standards category or Matter logo is not a feature-by-feature compatibility promise.
- Connection route: Will you pair the device directly, share it from another controller, or connect through a bridge? Bridge coverage may be narrower than a native integration.
- Cloud and account requirements: Does the manufacturer require an account to enable Matter, even if routine control can be local?
- Installation: Does your Home Assistant installation meet the current Matter app requirements? The official guide recommends Home Assistant OS and identifies other installation types as unsupported.
