A secondary report says zkAPI can let its treasury claim an expired, unclosed deposit note. The Ethereum Foundation’s listing describes the project’s broader aim—private, metered API access funded by deposits—but does not spell out the expiry rule. The duration, recovery options and claim process have not been established in the sources available here.
What zkAPI is—and what is reported about expired deposits
The Ethereum Foundation dAI Team lists a project called ZK API Usage Credits: LLMs and Beyond, credited to Davide Crapis and Vitalik Buterin. Its summary describes a protocol for private, metered API access: users deposit funds once, then make unlinkable requests, with Rate-Limiting Nullifier (RLN) and zero-knowledge solvency proofs involved.

A CryptoCompass report published October 2, 2026 identifies the launched tool as zkAPI and says it went live on Ethereum mainnet on October 1, 2026. The report also says a note has an expiry date and that the treasury can claim it if the note has not been closed by then. The treasury-claim detail is reported by this secondary source; the Ethereum Foundation listing does not confirm it.
What is not yet clear about the expiry rule
The available sources do not establish how long a note lasts, whether a user can recover or renew an expired note, what action triggers a treasury claim, or what entity or wallet “treasury” refers to. They also do not provide the implementation details needed to assess how the expiry rule works in practice.
#1 Best Overall
- Cryptocurrency cold storage made easy. The iCoin Wallet securely holds your Bitcoin & Ethereum Private Keys encrypted in the device’s memory. This now includes native NFT (ERC-721) as well as ERC-20 support. Because the iCoin Wallet has no Network connection (no WiFi, no cellular antenna, no SD card slot, no microphone, no front facing camera) you can be assured that your Private Keys are not exposed to any Blockchain or Internet.
- A 3" LCD touchscreen display allows direct secure entry of pin codes and seed phrase entropy. The Wallet now offers encrypted Bluetooth support in addition to an Air Gap only functionality which employs the Wallet’s rear facing high-res camera to read QR codes and enable transactions for safe data entry and retrieval.
- Entropy is generated using iCoin’s patented technique, making your key generation cryptographically secure. iCoin Mobile App is your Wallet's gateway to the Blockchain networks. Available on: Apple App Store (iOS) & Google Playstore (Android)

So the reported consequence is specific but incomplete: an unclosed note may be claimable by the treasury after expiry. That is not enough to determine whether users have a grace period, a recovery route, or any other protection. Those details require a technical specification or an authoritative statement from the project.

The Foundation’s summary supports describing zkAPI as intended to provide private, metered access with unlinkable requests, using RLN and zero-knowledge solvency proofs. It does not provide a full threat model or explain which information is hidden from the API provider, the payment system, or other parties. In particular, the summary alone does not establish that prompts, responses, provider identity or every payment attribute are private.
Don’t confuse zkAPI with similarly named projects
zkAPI is not the same project as zBase, whose site describes private USDC payments for AI agents using x402 and Privacy Pools. Nor is it Eunomia, a Stellar Soroban treasury project whose “Leash” feature describes expiry of an agent’s spending authority. Those projects do not verify zkAPI’s reported expired-note rule.
