Your phone does more than enter a password when it connects to Wi-Fi. It selects a network, establishes a wireless link with an access point, applies that network’s security, gets local network settings, and then routes app traffic. A connected Wi-Fi icon means the wireless link is up; it does not necessarily mean the phone has unrestricted internet access.
How does a phone connect to Wi-Fi?
The steps happen in sequence, though a phone may reuse saved network information. The exact behavior depends on the phone, the network, and its security configuration.

It finds and selects a network
With Wi-Fi enabled, the phone detects nearby networks and may automatically reconnect to one it has joined before. Android describes automatic reconnection to saved networks when they are nearby and Wi-Fi is on. Apple says its devices prioritize known networks using a score influenced by user actions, network category, and recency. Selection details vary by platform. Android’s connection guidance and Apple’s auto-join guidance explain their respective behavior.

It establishes a wireless link
The phone and access point exchange IEEE 802.11 management frames to authenticate and associate. In this protocol context, “authentication” is a step in establishing the link; it does not necessarily mean the network has verified a person’s identity. RFC 7458 and RFC 5416 describe relevant protocol concepts.

The network applies its security method
For a home network, a password-based setup helps provide access and establish link keys. Enterprise Wi-Fi can add 802.1X/EAP authentication with user or device credentials, followed by key exchange. An open network may have no Wi-Fi link encryption. These modes do not provide identical protections: Apple warns that disabling Wi-Fi security disables authentication and encryption, allowing others to join and monitor transmitted data. See Apple’s router security guidance.
-
The phone receives local network settings
To communicate beyond the local wireless link, the phone needs an IP configuration and typically a default route and DNS resolver information. Networks commonly provide settings through DHCP and IPv6 Router Advertisements. RFC 9463 also defines options for discovering network-designated encrypted DNS resolvers, including DNS over HTTPS, DNS over TLS, and DNS over QUIC. Which settings are available depends on the network and device. RFC 9463 covers these resolver-discovery options.

Apps send traffic over the configured route
When an app contacts an online service, the phone uses the network route it received. A DNS lookup may happen first to find the service’s address. HTTPS/TLS can protect app data between the phone and that service, but joining Wi-Fi does not ensure that every app connection is encrypted. Encrypted DNS protects DNS questions and answers, not the rest of an app’s traffic. Android’s network settings help and RFC 9463 describe these distinct functions.

Why can Wi-Fi connect without internet access?
Joining the access point establishes a local wireless connection; reaching the internet also depends on usable network settings and an onward connection. Some public networks require a captive-portal step, such as accepting terms or signing in, before ordinary internet access is allowed. A phone can therefore be connected to Wi-Fi while apps still cannot reach the services they need.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What can a Wi-Fi network see?
The local network handles information needed to connect and route traffic, including the phone’s current network address and traffic metadata. What an observer can read depends on which protections are in place and which part of the connection is being considered.
- Wi-Fi link encryption protects the wireless hop on supported, secured networks; it does not by itself guarantee that every later connection is private.
- HTTPS/TLS can protect application data in transit between the phone and the service it contacts.
- Encrypted DNS protects DNS questions and answers when configured and successfully used. It does not encrypt all other traffic.
These layers do not make an access point or network operator inherently trustworthy. A Wi-Fi password and a familiar network name alone cannot establish that the network or its supplied settings are safe.

What is a private or randomized Wi-Fi address?
A Wi-Fi MAC address is a device identifier used at the link layer. Modern phones can use a randomized or private address instead of exposing the same hardware address on every network. Google says Android 10 and later devices have another address and provides a setting to view the randomized MAC address. Apple also documents Private Wi-Fi Address. The available controls and exact behavior depend on the operating-system version and network. See Android’s network settings help and Apple’s router guidance.

How do the main Wi-Fi privacy protections differ?
| Protection or setup | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Wi-Fi with a shared password | Uses a password-based setup to help grant network access and establish link keys. | The password does not mean all later app traffic is encrypted or private. |
| Enterprise Wi-Fi with individual credentials | Can use 802.1X/EAP authentication, giving users or devices a different authentication model from a shared home password. | It does not make every subsequent app connection private by itself. |
| Open Wi-Fi | Allows a device to join without Wi-Fi link encryption in the open-network case. | It does not protect the wireless hop with Wi-Fi encryption. |
| Encrypted DNS | Protects DNS questions and answers when configured and successfully used. | It does not encrypt other app traffic. Google states: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.” (Google Android Help) |
| HTTPS/TLS | Can protect application data in transit between a phone and an online service. | It is a separate protection from Wi-Fi encryption and DNS encryption. |
What should you do on public Wi-Fi?
- Use sites and apps that use HTTPS.
- Keep the phone’s Wi-Fi software current.
- Do not treat a network name as proof of who operates it.
- Remember that a captive portal may require a login or acceptance step before internet access works.
Also, network-provided configuration is not automatically trustworthy: DHCP and Router Advertisements do not authenticate the information they supply. RFC 9463 notes risks on WLANs and that configuration should be treated carefully. A shared pre-shared key is also shared within that WLAN; the same key used for all clients is available to those nodes. An enterprise network with unique credentials follows a different authentication model.
