Turning off Roku’s privacy controls can limit certain kinds of viewing recognition and ad personalization, but it does not disable every form of data collection or remove ads. The clearest functional trade-off is that Roku’s “More Ways to Watch” feature depends on Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). Roku’s published guidance does not establish that every other feature remains unaffected on every device, and it cannot verify the first-person experience implied by “almost nothing broke.”
Which Roku settings affect viewing recognition?
Smart TV Experience and ACR
Roku says its Smart TV Experience uses ACR to recognize movies, TV shows, and games watched through streaming, an antenna, or other connected devices. On a Roku TV, the documented on-device path is Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Roku says ACR is not enabled out of the box and can be disabled there.

ACR matters to “More Ways to Watch,” which can use recognized content to surface ways to watch a show or movie through streaming apps. Roku says the feature requires ACR, so turning ACR off makes that ACR-dependent prompt and discovery feature unavailable. This is a specific feature trade-off, not evidence that streaming itself stops working.
Disabling ACR does not erase data already collected while it was enabled. Roku Support says that data “will be retained by Roku.” Its support guidance also describes opting in through Roku account privacy settings.

Smart TV Experience and audience segments
Roku’s Smart TV Experience documentation also describes sharing viewing-derived audience segments and an opt-out for the feature. This is related to, but not identical in effect to, the separate choice about personalized ads: one concerns the Smart TV Experience and viewing-derived segments; the other concerns ad personalization on Roku services.
Does turning off personalized ads remove Roku ads?
No. Roku’s Privacy Policy, last updated July 1, 2026, says that when Personalized Ads is off, ads still appear and may be contextual—for example, related to the subject matter being watched or the time of day. The policy says ads will be “less relevant to you,” not absent.

Roku describes the Personalized Ads control as available in the device’s Privacy settings or on the Roku website. The setting limits ad personalization while using Roku services with the account; it should not be read as a universal switch for every ad shown by every channel.
What does “Limit third-party ad tracking” do?
Roku’s “Limit third-party ad tracking” setting signals to third-party channel providers that the user wants them to stop using the device’s advertising identifier to personalize ads. Roku does not promise that every channel provider will comply, and its privacy policy notes that third-party providers may collect information when users interact with their channels.

Roku says a factory reset removes this preference. That makes it a device-level signal rather than a permanent account-wide guarantee. Check the privacy or advertising controls and policy inside each channel you use for settings that Roku’s preference does not cover.
Which ad controls are narrower than they sound?
Sensitive categories and “Hide this ad”
Roku’s sensitive-category and hide-ad controls apply to specified non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers. Roku says they do not cover video ads, ads inside partner apps, or certain ads displayed universally. They are useful for limiting some menu and screensaver ads, not for eliminating advertising across the platform.
Reset Advertising Identifier
Resetting the Advertising Identifier is a separate device setting identified in Roku’s Privacy Policy. A reset changes the identifier; it is not the same action as turning off Personalized Ads and does not, by itself, establish that all collection or personalization has stopped.

How to review the controls without confusing their effects
- On a Roku TV, open Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Review the ACR control and disable it if you do not want the ACR-based recognition described by Roku. Expect More Ways to Watch prompts that depend on ACR to be unavailable.
- Open the device’s Privacy settings and find Personalized Ads. Turning this off limits personalization of ads on Roku services, but ads remain.
- Review “Limit third-party ad tracking” separately. It is a signal to channel providers about use of the advertising identifier, not a guarantee for every app.
- Review Roku’s ad preference controls for sensitive categories or individual display ads. These apply to specified banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers, not all video or partner-app advertising.
- Check privacy settings within the channels you use. Roku’s controls do not determine every third-party channel’s data practices or preferences.
Menu labels and availability can vary by device and software version. Roku distinguishes a Roku TV from a standalone Roku streaming player; the ACR path above is documented for Roku TV. If a setting is not present under that name, consult the device’s current on-screen settings and Roku support information for its model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can you reasonably conclude about “almost nothing broke”?
Roku’s published documentation supports a narrower conclusion: turning off these controls affects particular recognition, personalization, and ad behaviors, while the documented feature loss is ACR-dependent More Ways to Watch. It does not document every possible effect across device models, Roku OS versions, regions, or third-party channels. Without a documented test identifying those details, “almost nothing broke” should be treated as an individual observation rather than a general guarantee.

These controls also do not amount to disabling all tracking on a Roku device. They address specific Roku settings and signals; Roku’s own policy distinguishes its services from third-party providers, and previously collected ACR data is retained after ACR is disabled.
