What Happens When You Send Bitcoin? Fees, Confirmations, and Privacy

A Bitcoin send spends prior transaction outputs, pays a fee for block space, and becomes confirmed when included in a block. Learn what affects fees, delays, and privacy.

When you send Bitcoin, your wallet creates and broadcasts a signed transaction that spends earlier outputs. The transaction may appear to the recipient before it is confirmed, but it becomes part of the blockchain only when a miner includes it in a block. The fee depends mainly on transaction size and competition for block space—not on the amount of bitcoin sent. The transaction record is public, so Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not inherently private.

What your wallet does when you send Bitcoin

Bitcoin does not move between software accounts in the same way money moves between bank accounts. The network records transactions that spend existing unspent transaction outputs, usually called UTXOs, and create new outputs. A wallet keeps track of the outputs it can spend and uses them to construct a payment.

  1. Select inputs. The wallet chooses one or more spendable outputs associated with your funds. These become the transaction’s inputs.
  2. Create outputs. The transaction specifies an output for the recipient and may create another output returning unused value to you as change. Change is not an additional fee; it is a new output controlled by your wallet.
  3. Set the fee and sign. The combined value of the outputs cannot exceed the inputs. The difference is the fee claimed by the miner that includes the transaction. Your wallet signs the transaction so the network can verify that the inputs may be spent.
  4. Broadcast it. The wallet sends the transaction to the peer-to-peer network. Nodes can relay it, and the recipient may see it while it is still unconfirmed.
  5. Wait for block inclusion. A miner includes the transaction in a block. That block inclusion is the first confirmation; later blocks add further confirmations.

A transaction’s input and output arrangement helps explain why two payments of the same bitcoin amount can have different fees. One may need to spend a single output, while another may need several; the transactions can therefore differ in size.

How Bitcoin transaction fees are calculated

Wallets commonly express the fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte, written sat/vB. The fee is broadly the transaction’s virtual size multiplied by the selected fee rate. A transaction with more inputs or outputs generally takes more block space and costs more at the same rate. The bitcoin amount being transferred does not, by itself, determine transaction size or fee.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Bitcoin.org’s fee explainer uses about 140 virtual bytes as an illustrative size for a simple transaction with one input and two outputs. That is an example, not a universal size: the actual transaction depends on its inputs, outputs, and other details. It should not be used as a fixed fee quote.

Block space is limited. When many transactions compete to be included, fee rates tend to rise; when demand eases, a lower rate may be enough for timely inclusion. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes miners prioritizing transactions by fee per byte. A higher rate can improve a transaction’s priority relative to others, but it does not buy a guaranteed confirmation deadline.

Choosing the fee in your wallet

At the point of sending, compare the wallet’s offered fee choices and any associated timing estimates. Those estimates are predictions, not promises. Bitcoin.org’s fee explainer uses live estimates from mempool.space, with a Blockstream fallback, and notes that different wallets can produce different estimates. Network demand changes, so an amount that was competitive earlier may not be competitive later.

  • If the payment is time-sensitive, consider the wallet’s current higher-priority option and whether its cost is acceptable.
  • If you can wait, a lower fee may be acceptable, with the trade-off that confirmation could take longer or remain uncertain.
  • Check the transaction size as well as the rate: a higher rate on a larger transaction produces a larger total fee.
  • Review the wallet’s fee and recipient details before signing. Once broadcast, a transaction is not simply a bank transfer that can be recalled by contacting the network.

There is no evergreen “correct fee” to quote. Use the estimate available in your wallet when you are preparing the transaction, and treat its timing indication as guidance rather than a service-level guarantee.

What a confirmation means—and how long it can take

A transaction is unconfirmed while it has not been included in a block. The first block containing it gives it one confirmation. Every new block found afterward adds another, increasing the work that would be required to alter the earlier block. A recipient or wallet may display a transaction before this point, but visibility is not the same milestone as confirmation.

Bitcoin.org’s FAQ says new blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes on average. That is an average block interval, not a countdown or promise that your transaction will confirm within ten minutes. Block discovery is probabilistic, so an individual block—and the confirmation it provides—can arrive sooner or later. A transaction’s fee rate relative to current demand also affects how likely it is to be selected promptly.

People sometimes cite six confirmations as a threshold, and Bitcoin.org’s FAQ mentions it as a commonly cited figure. It is not a universal rule. A person or service deciding when to treat a payment as sufficiently settled should set a threshold appropriate to the value, risk, and context of that payment.

What to do if a transaction is unconfirmed

An unconfirmed transaction may be waiting in one or more nodes’ mempools, where nodes hold transactions they have not yet placed in a block. A fee rate that is not competitive with current demand can mean a longer wait. An unconfirmed status alone does not mean the bitcoin has been permanently lost, but it also does not mean the payment has completed.

Options available to the sender

  • Wait. If the transaction remains available to the network, it may be included in a later block as conditions change.
  • Check for Replace-by-Fee support. If the wallet and transaction support Replace-by-Fee (RBF), the sender may be able to replace the unconfirmed transaction with one paying a higher fee. Whether this is available, and how to use it, depends on the wallet and its settings.
  • Follow the wallet’s recovery instructions. If nodes drop the transaction before it confirms, its inputs remain spendable because the transaction never confirmed. Wallets handle the practical recovery process differently; use the instructions for the wallet that created the transaction rather than applying a universal procedure.

Before trying to send again, check the status in the wallet that made the payment. Acting without understanding whether the original transaction is still active can create confusion about which payment the recipient may eventually see. A wallet’s own status and recovery guidance are the relevant starting point.

What other people can learn from a Bitcoin payment

On-chain Bitcoin transactions are published to a public, persistent blockchain. Addresses are pseudonymous: the ledger does not inherently print a person’s name beside every address, but the transaction history can expose patterns. Reusing addresses and linking payments can make it easier to connect activity. Someone who can associate an address or transaction with a person may be able to inspect related public activity.

The Bitcoin Developer Guide advises against reusing addresses and explains that generating new addresses can improve financial privacy. A fresh receiving address can make simple payment linking harder, but it does not erase the public record or guarantee anonymity. Address hygiene is one part of privacy, not a way to make an on-chain payment invisible.

Your wallet’s connection can reveal information too

Privacy depends not only on the blockchain but also on how your wallet obtains transaction data. Bitcoin Core’s privacy page explains that lightweight wallets may query peers or servers for wallet-related information. A service that receives those queries may learn which addresses are being checked and could infer balances or relationships among transactions.

A full node handles this trade-off differently and can reduce reliance on a third-party blockchain-data provider. That approach entails setup and resource costs, and the Bitcoin Core guidance is specific to its software; do not assume every wallet has the same query design. When assessing a wallet, look for current documentation about how it connects, what data its providers can observe, and whether you can use your own node.

Bitcoin.org’s privacy page also notes that Tor can help disassociate online activity from an IP address. This can address one part of the connection-level privacy picture; it does not prevent an on-chain transaction from being analyzed or guarantee that it cannot be linked to a person.

On-chain payments and Lightning are different paths

An on-chain send creates a transaction that competes for block space and is recorded in the blockchain. Bitcoin.org describes Lightning as a payment layer built on Bitcoin for near-instant, typically lower-cost small and frequent payments. Lightning payments use a different payment path, with channels later settling to the Bitcoin blockchain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on the intended payment, the wallet’s support, and the settlement path you need. Do not assume that an on-chain transfer and a Lightning payment have identical fee mechanics, confirmation behavior, or records. For a payment intended to be recorded directly on the blockchain, the on-chain process described above is the relevant one.

What to check before choosing a wallet

Wallet design affects control, fee management, and what information may be disclosed through network queries. Bitcoin.org describes wallets as tools for managing the keys that control funds, ranging from mobile apps to dedicated hardware devices. A hardware wallet does not change network fees, block timing, or the public nature of an on-chain transaction.

  • Key control: Check who controls the private keys and what that means for your ability to authorize transactions.
  • Fee tools: Find out whether the wallet lets you choose a fee rate and whether it supports fee bumping such as Replace-by-Fee.
  • Network privacy: Check which servers or peers the wallet contacts for address and transaction data, and whether using your own node is supported.
  • Address handling: See whether it generates fresh receiving addresses and change addresses rather than encouraging reuse.
  • Recovery and setup: Understand the wallet’s setup and recovery process before relying on it to hold funds.

These are questions to verify against the wallet’s current documentation, not features to assume from a device category or marketing description. A wallet’s privacy model and recovery steps can differ even when two wallets offer similar send screens.

A practical way to think about a Bitcoin send

Separate three questions that are easy to conflate. First, was the transaction broadcast and is it visible to the recipient? Second, has it been included in a block, and how many confirmations does it have? Third, what fee rate and wallet connection were used? The first concerns network visibility, the second concerns settlement progress, and the third helps explain prioritization and privacy exposure.

For an ordinary on-chain payment, review the recipient, the fee offered by the wallet under current conditions, and the resulting transaction status. If it is pending, use the wallet’s status and RBF guidance rather than treating the average block interval as a deadline. For privacy, assume that on-chain details remain public and assess both address reuse and the wallet’s data connections; neither fresh addresses nor Tor alone make a transaction anonymous.
