Moving a file between two partitions on the same physical drive usually means the system copies the file to the destination partition and then deletes the original. It is not usually a quick rename: the partitions are separate volumes or filesystems, so the file’s contents must be written to the destination. The exact behavior depends on the operating system, filesystem, and app performing the move.
Why a move between partitions usually copies the file
A physical drive is the storage device; a partition is a section of that device presented to the operating system as a volume. Two partitions on one disk generally have separate filesystems. The system therefore cannot usually move a file between them by changing its directory entry alone.

For a cross-volume move, the common sequence is: copy the data to the destination, then remove the source. The destination needs enough free space for the incoming file while the copy is in progress. The operation can take about as long as copying the file, although the actual time depends on the system and workload; a same-disk move is not automatically a same-filesystem rename.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat happens to the original file?
The original is removed only after the copy succeeds and the application can delete the source. If the copy succeeds but deletion fails, both copies may remain. Microsoft documents this outcome for its MoveFileEx function: a cross-volume move is simulated with copy and delete, and the source can be left in place if it cannot be deleted.

If the operation is interrupted or encounters an error, what remains depends on the tool doing the move. Do not assume that every app rolls back a partial transfer or treats a move across partitions as one atomic operation. Check both the source and destination before trying again, especially if you are unsure whether the copy finished.
How this differs from moving within one partition
When source and destination are in the same filesystem, a move can often be handled as a rename or directory-entry change rather than rewriting all file contents. On Linux, rename(2) supports moves within a filesystem and documents the successful operation as atomic. Across mounted filesystems it returns EXDEV. GNU mv responds to that cross-filesystem condition by copying the files and removing the originals after a successful copy, as described in the GNU Coreutils mv manual.

What the documented platform behavior says
Windows
Microsoft’s MoveFileEx documentation says that moving to another volume uses copy and delete. It also specifies that the destination directory’s default security descriptor is assigned rather than carrying over the source security descriptor. This is a documented API behavior, not a guarantee that every Windows file manager or application uses the same API or presents the same prompts and progress details.
Apple platforms
Apple’s FileManager moveItem(atPath:toPath:) documentation states that when source and destination are on different volumes, the method copies the item and then removes it from its current location. That describes this API method; it should not be treated as a promise about every macOS app’s move interface.

Linux and GNU mv
Linux’s rename(2) manual distinguishes filesystem boundaries, not hardware devices: it returns EXDEV when paths are on different mounted filesystems, even if the same underlying filesystem is mounted at multiple points. GNU mv handles the cross-filesystem case by copying and, after a successful copy, removing the source.
Will permissions and other metadata stay the same?
Not necessarily. A cross-volume transfer may recreate or translate metadata at the destination, and behavior varies by platform and application. Microsoft’s documented security-descriptor behavior is one concrete example; it does not establish a universal rule for timestamps, ownership, alternate data streams, extended attributes, or every kind of permission. If exact metadata preservation matters, verify the destination with a tool and workflow designed for that requirement.

Practical checks before moving a large batch
- Confirm that the destination partition has enough free space for the data being transferred.
- For a large or important transfer, move a small sample first and confirm that the destination copy opens as expected.
- Wait for the operation to finish before deleting anything manually. If an error or interruption occurs, inspect both locations to see whether the source, destination, or both contain the file.
- If permissions or specialized metadata matter, check what the specific operating system tool or application preserves rather than assuming a move keeps every property unchanged.
