A force restart makes an unresponsive Samsung Galaxy turn off and start again using its physical buttons. It can interrupt running apps and refresh the system, but the procedure is not a factory reset and does not erase the phone’s data. [Samsung US Support]
What a force restart does
Use a force restart when the phone is frozen or otherwise unresponsive and you cannot restart it from the screen. Holding the Side/Power key and Volume down tells the device to power-cycle; after it starts, the Samsung logo may appear. Restarting closes running apps and refreshes the system, but it does not identify or fix the underlying cause of a recurring freeze. How to force restart a Samsung phone
- Press and hold the Side key (also called the Power key on some models) and Volume down at the same time.
- Keep holding until the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears, then release the buttons. Samsung’s US guidance says to hold for more than seven seconds; its Canada guidance says about ten seconds or until the device turns off and on. A frozen device can take up to 60 seconds to shut down, so allow time rather than assuming nothing is happening. Timing and button labels can vary by model. Samsung US and Samsung Canada provide their respective instructions.
If a power menu appears, that alone does not confirm the phone has restarted; continue following the instructions for your model. If Maintenance Boot Mode appears, choose Normal Boot. What to expect after the phone restarts
If the device is secured with a biometric feature, Samsung says it may ask for the backup password or PIN after reboot. Have that credential available if prompted. Samsung US Support
If the phone still will not turn on
Check for a fully drained battery
Connect the phone to a Samsung-certified charger and compatible cable. A completely discharged battery may not show a charging indicator immediately, so leave it connected for a while before trying again. Samsung Singapore’s charging guidance

Escalate recurring freezes or boot problems
If the phone repeatedly freezes, remains stuck during startup, or still will not respond after charging and a force restart, follow Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance or seek service. Repeating the button sequence cannot establish what caused the problem. Do not use a factory reset as a casual next step: it erases data, so back up first if the phone allows it. Samsung US Support
