Deleting the Windows.old folder removes the saved copy of your previous Windows installation. Your current Windows keeps running, but the built-in Go back option to the earlier version disappears, and Microsoft states that this deletion cannot be undone through that rollback route. Before you remove it, confirm that you do not need the old version or any files still stored inside the folder.
What the folder holds
After a feature upgrade, Windows keeps the previous installation in the Windows.old folder so you can return to it. Microsoft describes the folder as containing the previous version of Windows on the device, so removing it deletes those saved installation files. The rollback process uses Windows.old together with a companion folder named $windows.~bt, so leave both alone unless you have decided not to roll back. The current installation does not depend on the old files to keep running.

What you give up when you delete it
- The Go back option. Microsoft’s deletion guidance says: “If you delete your previous version of Windows, this can’t be undone (you won’t be able to go back to your previous version of Windows).” (Microsoft Support, Delete your previous version of Windows)
- The rollback window. Microsoft says the previous version is removed automatically ten days after an upgrade, and that in most cases the Go back option is available for those ten days (Microsoft Support, Go back to the previous version of Windows). Treat ten days as Microsoft’s normal guidance, not a guarantee for every managed or heavily customized device.
- Files not yet copied out. If you selected “Nothing” under “Choose what to keep” during the upgrade, personal files may be temporarily saved in Windows.old for ten days. Microsoft’s file-retrieval guidance puts it plainly: “There are only 10 days to retrieve files from the Windows.old folder.” (Microsoft Support, Retrieve files from the Windows.old folder after a Windows upgrade) Once the folder is deleted, anything still inside it goes with it.
Check these points before you delete
- Are you still troubleshooting the new version? Wait until you are confident it works, because the rollback path closes when the folder is removed.
- Did you choose “Nothing” during the upgrade? If so, copy any files you need out of Windows.old first. Microsoft lists an external USB flash drive as one possible backup destination. A drive is optional, and Microsoft does not say how much capacity you need.
- Is the category clearly labelled? In the cleanup list, confirm that the item you are selecting refers to the previous Windows installation before you confirm removal.
How to delete it with built-in cleanup
Use Windows’ own cleanup controls rather than trying to delete the folder directly in File Explorer. Microsoft’s instructions direct you to the built-in cleanup tools, which identify the previous installation as a removable system-file category. You need an administrator account for this action (Microsoft Support, Free up drive space in Windows). Menu labels can change between Windows releases and updates, so the names below are the ones Microsoft documents at the time of writing.
Windows 11
- Open Settings, then go to System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files.
- Tick Previous Windows installation(s) and confirm that it is the only item you intend to remove.
- Select Remove files, then confirm.
Microsoft also documents a Cleanup recommendations route for the previous installation in the same Storage area (Microsoft Support, Free up drive space in Windows).

Windows 10
- Open Settings, then go to System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files.
- Select the previous Windows installation entry, then choose the option to remove it.
Microsoft’s note KB5012334 covers deleting the Windows.old folder with Storage Sense in the Settings app for the Windows 10 versions it specifies (Microsoft Support, KB5012334). Microsoft’s go-back page states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so the operating system’s support status is separate from how the folder is removed.
Disk Cleanup
- Search the Start menu for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Select the Windows drive, usually
C:. - Select Clean up system files.
- If offered, tick the previous Windows installation category, then confirm the deletion.
Keep it or remove it
| Situation | Keep Windows.old for now | Remove it through Windows cleanup |
|---|---|---|
| You may need to roll back | The Go back route stays available within Microsoft’s documented window | The route ends and cannot be undone |
| Files may still be inside | Retrieve them first, using Microsoft’s retrieval steps | Unretrieved contents are deleted with the folder |
| Disk space is tight | The old installation keeps occupying space | The space used by the previous installation is reclaimed; Microsoft does not give a standard amount because it depends on the installation |
| Ten days have passed since the upgrade | Windows may already have removed the folder automatically | Nothing remains to delete, or the folder is already gone |
When the folder is missing or cleanup does not show it
- Automatic removal. The folder may have been deleted after the rollback period ended.
- The install path did not create it. Microsoft says Reset this PC does not create Windows.old in the scenarios its retrieval guidance documents (Microsoft Support, Retrieve files from the Windows.old folder after a Windows upgrade). A later install, upgrade, refresh, or reset can also replace the existing folder contents.
- Recovery options. If you need to recover the system by another route, Microsoft’s recovery options overview lists the alternatives (Microsoft Support, Recovery options in Windows).
A missing folder or an absent cleanup option does not mean Windows is damaged.

If the new version works the way you need and you have copied any files you want to keep, removing the previous installation is a routine way to reclaim disk space. If you are still testing the upgrade, leave the folder in place until you are sure you will not need to go back.
