Blocking a number usually keeps its calls from reaching you and its messages from appearing, but voicemail and what the caller hears depend on the phone app and service. On iPhone, a blocked person can still leave voicemail without notifying you; Google Phone automatically declines blocked calls and, with visual voicemail enabled, prevents those callers from leaving voicemail. Google Voice gives blocked callers a “Number not in service” message.
What blocking usually does—and what it doesn’t guarantee
Blocking is a setting handled by a particular phone, calling, or messaging app. It generally suppresses calls and messages from the number, but it does not produce one universal result across phones and carriers. In particular, whether the caller can leave voicemail, whether you see a missed call, and what the caller hears can vary.

A block in your phone’s built-in apps should not be assumed to block the same person in WhatsApp or another third-party service. Those apps have their own blocking controls.

What happens on an iPhone
Apple says a blocked person can still leave a voicemail, but you will not receive a notification about it. Messages sent or received from the blocked contact are not delivered, and Apple says the contact is not notified that the call or message was blocked. These details are in Apple’s iPhone and iPad blocking guidance, published June 4, 2026.

Blocking across Apple devices and apps
Apple’s Personal Safety Guide says a block applies across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, but its instructions cover Apple apps; third-party apps must be handled separately. In a group Messages conversation, a blocked person may still see your messages even though you do not see theirs. See Apple’s guidance on blocking, screening, and filtering communications.
Where to find blocked contacts
For iOS 26, Apple’s instructions place the list at Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts. Menu locations differ in older iOS versions, so check the instructions for your installed version if that path is not present.

What happens with Google Phone on Android
Google Phone Help says a blocked number’s call is declined automatically. If visual voicemail is on, the caller cannot leave a voicemail; calls received while the number was blocked do not appear in call history. These are Google Phone’s documented behaviors, not a guarantee for every Android dialer, carrier, or voicemail setup. Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 6.0 and later. See Google Phone’s blocking instructions.

In Google Phone, the “Unknown” option blocks private or unidentified numbers. Google says calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts are still allowed, so this setting is not a way to block every unfamiliar caller.

Why Android behavior can differ
Android’s platform documentation describes number blocking for calls, SMS, and MMS, while also accounting for default dialer and messaging apps and manufacturer or carrier integration. As a result, available controls and the user-facing effect can differ between Android devices. The Android Open Source Project explains this implementation context in its phone-number blocking documentation.
Google Voice has a different caller message
Google Voice is a separate calling and messaging service, not simply another name for the standard Android dialer. Its Help page says calls and messages from a blocked number are marked as blocked, and you do not get that number’s messages. When the person calls, they hear “Number not in service.” That caller-facing message is specific to Google Voice; see Google Voice’s blocking guidance.

Can someone tell that you blocked them?
There is no single caller-facing signal that applies to every phone. Apple says the blocked contact is not notified. Google Voice gives blocked callers a “Number not in service” message. Google Phone’s documentation says calls are automatically declined but does not specify exactly what the caller hears. A caller therefore may notice a different result, but these documented behaviors do not establish a reliable universal way to detect a block.
