When stolen cryptocurrency reaches a centralized exchange, the exchange may review or restrict the account, and investigators may use the deposit to identify a lead, request account records, and seek legal authority to freeze or seize assets. None of those steps automatically reverses the blockchain transfer or guarantees that the victim will recover money. What happens next depends on whether the funds remain traceable, the exchange’s procedures, evidence, jurisdiction, and legal proceedings.
Why a centralized-exchange deposit can matter
A centralized exchange holds or administers customer accounts and can associate some activity with account records. That makes a deposit to an exchange potentially useful to investigators: the public blockchain may show which address sent funds to which destination, while records held by the exchange may help connect a deposit address or account to a customer. The two kinds of information answer different questions. A blockchain trail can show movement between addresses; it does not, by itself, establish the real-world identity of the person controlling each address.

This distinction is important when assessing a theft. Seeing stolen funds arrive at a known exchange address can provide a lead, but it does not mean the victim, the exchange, or the police can immediately identify the account holder or recover the assets. Investigators may need blockchain analysis, exchange records, evidence establishing that the funds came from a crime, and legal process to obtain or act on information. The Department of Justice’s case records describe both tracing funds across addresses and the use of exchange accounts and other services to move or obscure funds.
“Centralized exchange” describes the service involved, not a single universal response. An exchange may have internal review procedures, but its action can vary with its policies, the facts, applicable law, and whether authorities provide a valid legal order. Public materials do not establish one automatic detection algorithm, standard freeze speed, or recovery probability for all exchanges.

What may happen after the deposit
1. The transaction becomes a lead
On a public blockchain, a transaction can leave a visible record of funds moving between addresses. Investigators can use that record to follow subsequent transfers, although tracing movement is not the same as proving who controlled an address or why a transfer occurred. In the Department of Justice’s 2022 Bitfinex case, prosecutors alleged that defendants deposited stolen cryptocurrency into accounts at multiple virtual-currency exchanges and later withdrew it, alongside other steps intended to break up the visible flow. The case illustrates why an exchange deposit may be relevant even if the funds do not stay there.
2. The exchange may review or restrict activity
An exchange might ask for information about a transaction’s source, review account activity, or limit an account’s ability to move funds. A flag or review is not necessarily a freeze, and a deposit identified by a victim or investigator does not by itself establish that an exchange must take a particular action. In an August 11, 2023 public-service announcement, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) said, “Cryptocurrency exchanges only freeze accounts based on internal processes or in response to legal process.” Coinbase’s help materials offer one exchange-specific illustration: they describe freezes in limited circumstances, including court or authority orders and sanctions requirements. That example should not be treated as a rule for every exchange.
3. Investigators may seek records and follow the funds
Authorities may seek records that help connect a deposit or account to a customer, and they may continue tracing funds if they move onward. What information is available, and what legal steps are needed to obtain it, depend on the exchange and jurisdiction. A U.S. Department of Justice case involving an Ohio couple describes investigators tracing funds across blockchain addresses. In that case, Tether transferred 325,060 USDT from a traced address to a law-enforcement-controlled wallet under a federal seizure warrant. This is a specific case outcome, not a routine service an exchange or stablecoin issuer provides to victims.

4. A restriction, seizure, forfeiture, and payment to victims are different stages
These terms describe distinct events, not interchangeable promises of recovery:
| Stage | What it means | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Flag or review | An exchange examines activity or requests information under its internal procedures. | It does not prove a crime or mean assets have been frozen. |
| Account restriction or freeze | Access or transfers may be limited, either under internal controls or legal process. | It does not, on its own, transfer ownership to the government or the victim. |
| Seizure | Authorities take control of assets under legal authority; the cited Ohio case involved a federal seizure warrant. | It is not a final decision that the property is forfeited or that a particular victim will be paid. |
| Forfeiture proceeding | A court process asks whether property may be forfeited. | A filing is not a final judgment or proof that victims will receive funds. |
| Restitution or distribution | A later legal or administrative outcome may determine whether recovered value is returned and to whom. | It is not guaranteed merely because funds were traced, restricted, or seized. |
The Department of Justice’s 2025 civil forfeiture complaint concerning more than $225 million in cryptocurrency allegedly connected to investment-fraud proceeds illustrates the distinction: a complaint asks for judicial action; it is not itself a final forfeiture decision or a promise of victim distribution.
5. Funds can move beyond the first exchange
If assets are withdrawn or transferred to other services or addresses, investigators may still follow the trail, but the work can become more complicated. The Bitfinex case describes alleged use of multiple exchange accounts and other steps to break up fund flows. The FBI has also warned that overseas transfers can create investigative challenges, particularly when funds enter jurisdictions with weaker anti-money-laundering controls. A prompt report can give investigators useful identifiers, but no official source cited here sets a guaranteed response time or recovery likelihood.

What a victim should do
1. Contact the exchange through an official channel
Use the exchange’s official website or app, not a phone number, direct message, or link sent by someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Report suspected stolen funds and provide the identifiers that let the exchange locate the relevant activity:

- The sending and receiving wallet addresses, including the suspected exchange address if known.
- The cryptocurrency or token, amount, and date and time of the transfer; include the time zone if available.
- A police report, case number, or other incident reference, if you have one.
Ask the exchange to record the report and explain how to provide additional evidence. Its available actions depend on its procedures and applicable law; reporting does not compel it to reverse a public-chain transaction.
2. Report the theft to law enforcement
Report the incident to local law enforcement. For a U.S.-connected incident, you can also file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. IC3 says complaints may be analyzed and referred to law-enforcement or partner agencies. It does not conduct investigations or provide complainants with investigation status. The FBI’s August 24, 2023 guidance tells victims to “Do not wait” to submit a report.

Include what you know, even if you do not have every detail: the asset and amount, wallet addresses, transaction hash, dates and times, exchange names, a timeline of what happened, and relevant communications or websites and apps. If you lack transaction information, explain what records you do have and how the incident unfolded rather than delaying a report while trying to assemble a perfect file.
3. Preserve original evidence
Keep records in their original form where possible. Save exchange statements, wallet and transaction details, emails, text messages, phone numbers, URLs, screenshots, and communications with anyone claiming to help recover the funds. Keep copies of your reports and the exchange’s replies. FBI guidance asks people reporting cryptocurrency crimes to provide transaction details; preserving source records can help you give consistent information to investigators.

4. Treat recovery offers as a separate risk
Do not pay an unsolicited recovery service or share passwords, one-time codes, private keys, or wallet recovery phrases with anyone claiming to be exchange support or law enforcement. The FBI warns that recovery scammers may demand upfront fees, provide inaccurate tracing reports, and cannot issue seizure orders. It also warns that scammers impersonate exchange employees to steal login information. Verify support through the exchange’s official app or website and do not use contact details supplied by an unsolicited caller or message.

What reporting can—and cannot—change
Reporting promptly can put transaction identifiers and other evidence in the hands of the exchange or authorities while the funds may still be traceable. It cannot undo a completed public-chain transfer. The FBI describes cryptocurrency transactions as irrevocable, and exchange freezes depend on internal processes or legal process. A victim may report a transfer and provide evidence, but an exchange is not simply reversing the ledger entry on request.
The practical outcome depends on several linked conditions: whether investigators can trace the funds; whether they can connect relevant addresses to an exchange account; whether the account still holds assets; whether the exchange can act under its procedures or a legal order; whether authorities can establish criminal provenance; and whether domestic or cross-border cooperation is available. These are factors in an investigation, not a formula that predicts whether a particular victim will be repaid.
What major cases show—and what they do not
Large federal cases demonstrate that tracing, seizure, and forfeiture can occur, but their headline figures should not be mistaken for typical recoveries. In a 2022 release about the 2016 Bitfinex hack, the Department of Justice described approximately 120,000 bitcoin as stolen and said law enforcement had seized more than $3.6 billion in cryptocurrency linked to the hack at that time. Those are historical case figures; the dollar value reflects the context of that publication, not a current valuation or a general measure of recovery success.

That is one case-specific amount, not an average. Likewise, the Department of Justice’s 2025 complaint concerning more than $225 million in alleged investment-fraud proceeds was a request for court action, not a final judgment. The cases show possible investigative and legal steps; they do not establish an average timeline, an overall recovery rate, or what will happen in an individual complaint. No reliable recovery-rate statistic is established by these examples.
How to think about the likely path
If you are trying to understand what a deposit at an exchange means for your case, distinguish the current evidence from the hoped-for outcome. A visible transfer to an exchange address is a tracing lead. Evidence tying that deposit to a customer may require exchange records. A restriction may stop some activity without deciding who owns the assets. A seizure places assets under government control, while forfeiture and any victim distribution involve further legal decisions.
Because the cited guidance and case examples are primarily U.S.-based, they cannot define the powers, reporting routes, or exchange duties that apply everywhere. Laws and procedures vary by country, service, asset, and facts. For a specific case, report through official channels and follow instructions from the relevant law-enforcement agency; do not treat a tracing result or an exchange response as a guarantee of recovery.
