The reason for the change, the replacement’s fit and preparation, the supporting players, and the opponent all shape what happens next.
Why a team changes its starting quarterback
A new starter can enter because the incumbent is injured, because the coach believes another player gives the team a better chance to win, or because the team wants to evaluate or develop a younger quarterback. Those situations are not interchangeable: an emergency replacement may have little preparation, while a planned change can come with a more deliberate adjustment to the offense.

Joe Burrow’s season-ending wrist injury put Jake Browning into Cincinnati’s starting role in 2023. By contrast, the Associated Press reported in September 2025 that Giants coach Brian Daboll kept Russell Wilson as the starter for Week 2 after a poor opening game, saying he had confidence in Wilson while developing rookie Jaxson Dart. The examples show how a change—or the choice not to make one—depends on the circumstances. (Associated Press, December 16, 2023; Associated Press, September 2025)

What can change in the offense
Quarterbacks differ in how they read a defense, how quickly they release the ball, which throws they favor, and how they respond to pressure. A coach may adapt the plan to those differences rather than ask the replacement to reproduce the previous starter’s role exactly.

Reads, timing and play design
A staff might simplify progressions, call more rollouts, adjust protection, emphasize play action or lean more heavily on the running game. NFL.com’s account of quarterback fit describes examples including simpler reads and rollouts for Baker Mayfield, alongside offensive-line and running-game support. These are options teams can use—not changes every team makes, or tactics that guarantee success. (NFL.com, 2021)
Mobility, pressure and risk
A more mobile quarterback may be used on designed runs or encouraged to scramble when a pass play breaks down. Another may be asked to get the ball out quickly or avoid high-risk throws. The trade-offs depend on the player and the plan: rushing can add another threat for a defense to account for, while pressure, sacks and turnovers can erase gains.

The rest of the offense still matters
Protection determines how much time a quarterback has; receivers influence whether accurate throws become completions; and an effective running game can reduce the burden on the passing attack. NFL.com quoted Titans general manager Jon Robinson describing quarterback play in terms of leadership, decision-making and accuracy, while also stressing the importance of surrounding a quarterback with good players. A change at one position cannot by itself repair every weakness in an offense.

Wins and passing yards alone are poor ways to isolate a quarterback’s effect. A useful comparison accounts for what the quarterback did, what the team around him did, and the conditions of the games being compared.

ESPN’s 2011 explanation of Total QBR describes a metric designed to account for passing, rushing, sacks, fumbles, interceptions, penalties, pressure, game situation and the quarterback’s share of credit on a play. It uses a 100-point scale and situational weighting. That is ESPN’s description of its metric, not evidence that QBR is the definitive current measure of quarterback performance. (ESPN Press Room, August 2, 2011)
A 2026 NFL Analytics analysis examined 656 games from 2010 through 2025 in which a team started a different quarterback from its previous game, excluding games in which both teams changed starters. It reports that the teams in this selected sample won 36.5% of those games. That is a descriptive result from the author’s dataset, not an official NFL statistic or a causal estimate: injuries, roster quality, opponents and the circumstances behind a switch can all affect the win rate. What two quarterback-change examples show
Jake Browning takes over for Joe Burrow in Cincinnati
After Burrow’s season-ending wrist injury in 2023, Browning went 3–1 in his first four starts, according to the Associated Press. In one of those games, he helped Cincinnati rally from a 17–3 deficit late in the third quarter to beat Minnesota 27–24 in overtime. Browning completed 29 of 42 passes for 324 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Vikings also changed quarterbacks during that period: Nick Mullens threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns in the game, but had two interceptions. The result illustrates how a backup can perform well and how the opposing quarterback’s play can also shape a game; it does not establish that backups generally match their teams’ starters. New York keeps Russell Wilson ahead of Jaxson Dart
The Associated Press reported that Wilson remained New York’s starter for Week 2 in 2025 after completing 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards in a 21–6 season-opening loss. Daboll said he had confidence in Wilson and that the team was developing Dart. Receiver Darius Slayton described the poor offensive showing as a collective issue rather than Wilson’s responsibility alone.
This case shows that a coach may value continuity while developing a rookie, and that a quarterback’s statistics belong to a broader team performance. It is a dated example, not a statement about the Giants’ current depth chart. (Associated Press, September 2025)
Why the outcome is hard to predict
A quarterback change is an intervention made in response to a situation, not a controlled experiment. A replacement might be playing because the starter was hurt, the offense was already struggling, or the coaching staff wanted to evaluate a young player. Those circumstances can also affect the team’s results, making it difficult to credit or blame the new starter alone.
The most useful assessment therefore looks beyond the win-loss record: identify why the change happened, compare the quarterbacks’ contributions in context, and allow enough games to distinguish a repeatable pattern from a single result.
