What Happens When an Asteroid Hits Earth? Craters, Ejecta and Shocked Rock

An asteroid impact sends shock waves through the ground, excavates a crater, ejects and melts rock, and leaves mineral evidence of intense pressure and heat.

An asteroid strike does not simply punch a hole in the ground. Its rapid release of energy sends shock waves through the target, heats and fractures rock, excavates a crater and throws material outward. As the crater changes shape, some material melts or mixes with fragments; minerals in the surviving rocks can preserve evidence of the shock.

What happens at the moment of impact?

When a fast-moving asteroid or meteorite strikes a larger solid body, the collision compresses and heats both the incoming object and the ground. Shock waves travel through the target, fracturing and displacing rock while energy from the impact can melt and recrystallize it. NASA describes an impact crater as forming when an asteroid- or meteorite-like object crashes into a larger solid body such as a planet or moon (NASA Space Place).

The resulting crater is therefore not just the shape left by a projectile. It develops as target material is driven outward and upward, and the intense pressure and heat leave changes in rock and minerals around the impact site.

How does the crater form and change?

Excavation

In the first stage, displaced target material opens a temporary, or transient, cavity. Some material remains around the opening as the rim; some is launched away as ejecta. Shock waves can move through the surrounding air as well as the ground during crater development.

Modification

The cavity does not necessarily remain in its initial form. The rim and crater floor can move as the target responds to gravity and the crater modifies. A simulation by Roddy and colleagues (1987) modeled a 10-kilometre asteroid striking at a vertical speed of 20 km/s, with target settings representing continental and oceanic crust. In that specific model, transient-crater dimensions and ejecta differed between the settings; its figures are outputs for that modeled event, not general predictions for impacts of other sizes, speeds or targets (USGS-indexed simulation by Roddy and colleagues).

What are ejecta, and what happens to impact melt?

Ejecta are material thrown out of the developing crater. They consist chiefly of excavated target rock, although some impactor material can contribute. Near the crater, melted target rock may mix with fragments of broken, variably shocked rock and with material from the projectile.

The USGS account of Meteor Crater describes several possible products of that movement and mixing:

  • Glassy ballistic particles, including droplets carried away from the crater.
  • Metallic spherules and impact-melt breccias, in which melt occurs with broken rock.
  • Near-crater melt sheets, dikes or sills, where melt collects or enters surrounding rock.

Ejecta and melt deposits can preserve information about both the impact and the geology of the target. The materials present vary with the particular event; no single list describes every crater (USGS, 2024, Meteor Crater geology and impact melt).

What is shocked rock?

Shocked rock is target rock whose minerals record the very rapid pressure and temperature pulse of an impact. Geologists look for mineral-scale evidence rather than assuming that every sample has the same appearance. USGS summaries identify closely spaced planar microstructures in minerals, solid-state glass in silica and plagioclase, and high-pressure forms of silica, including coesite and stishovite, among documented shock effects (USGS, 1967, mineral shock features).

At Meteor Crater, quartz-bearing rocks display a range of effects, from fractured quartz to high-pressure silica phases and shock-melted glass. A specimen need not show every feature, and one clue by itself is not always sufficient to establish an impact origin; the evidence is interpreted in its geological context (USGS, 2024).

Why do impact outcomes differ?

The same sequence—shock, excavation, ejecta movement and crater modification—can produce different results under different conditions. The outcome depends on factors such as the impactor’s size and speed, the target’s composition and structure, and whether the target is oceanic or continental. The 1987 simulation illustrates that even its two modeled target settings produced different ejecta amounts; it should not be treated as a comprehensive comparison or a universal forecast (Roddy and colleagues, 1987).

For a familiar real-world example, NASA Space Place says Meteor Crater formed about 50,000 years ago. NASA gives an estimated impactor size of up to about 150 feet and a speed greater than 28,000 mph; these are estimates for that crater, not representative values for all impacts (NASA Space Place).
