A YouTube copyright strike and a live-stream restriction run on different clocks. YouTube says a strike expires 90 days after it is applied if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. A live stream removed for copyright can separately trigger a seven-day live-stream restriction, or 14 days if the channel gets another copyright strike. The removed video is not restored when the strike expires, and YouTube does not say whether an existing always-on broadcast automatically resumes when a restriction ends.
What happens when a YouTube copyright strike expires?
YouTube says a copyright strike expires 90 days after it was applied, provided you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. Without completing Copyright School, the strike remains active. See YouTube’s explanation of copyright strikes.

Strike expiry changes the channel’s strike status; it does not undo the copyright removal. YouTube states that the removed video is not reinstated when the strike expires. The original live stream or its archive therefore should not be expected to return just because 90 days have passed. YouTube’s copyright-removal guidance explains this distinction.

How long is the live-stream restriction?
If YouTube removes an active live stream for copyright, it says live-stream access is restricted for seven days. If the channel gets another copyright strike, the live-stream restriction lasts 14 days. These are restrictions on live streaming, not the 90-day duration of the copyright strike; the clocks should not be treated as interchangeable. YouTube describes these consequences in its copyright-strike guidance.

Will my always-on stream come back by itself?
YouTube’s public guidance reviewed here does not say whether a broadcast already being sent by an always-on encoder resumes automatically after a restriction ends, whether the encoder must reconnect, or whether you need to start a new broadcast. Do not assume the stream will restart on its own.
When the restriction period has passed, check YouTube Studio for the channel’s status and current stream state. YouTube advises creators whose live stream stops to check the Studio dashboard for strikes in its guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Check the stream and encoder status before relying on the broadcast being live again.

Is a copyright claim the same as a strike?
No. YouTube says Content ID claims typically do not result in copyright strikes. A claim and a copyright removal request that results in a strike are different situations, so a claim notice alone does not establish that the channel has received a strike or a live-stream restriction. YouTube also says a live stream may be interrupted during checks for third-party content; an interruption by itself does not establish that a strike was issued. Review the notice and account status in YouTube Studio.

The appropriate route depends on whether you accept the removal, believe it was mistaken, or can obtain the claimant’s cooperation. YouTube’s strike notice and account status explain the stated reason and available resolution options.

- Complete Copyright School and wait: If you complete the school and have fewer than three active strikes, YouTube says the strike expires after 90 days. This does not reinstate the removed video.
- Ask for a retraction: Contact the person or organization that submitted the removal request and ask them to retract it. YouTube identifies retraction as a way to resolve a strike.
- Consider a counter notification: YouTube describes this as a legal process for a removal you believe was mistaken or involved material that qualifies for a copyright exception. It is not simply an informal appeal. If the facts or consequences are complex, consider getting legal advice before submitting one. YouTube outlines the process in its copyright-strike guidance.
These options are not interchangeable, and no general article can determine whether a particular use qualifies for a copyright exception.
Can I use another channel while restricted?
No. YouTube says a restricted account may not use another channel to live stream while the restriction is active. Do not try to work around the restriction by broadcasting through a different channel. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

What if I have a license for the content?
A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. YouTube says a rights owner should add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist; without that, a live stream may still be interrupted, including when the creator has limited the stream to territories where they hold the necessary rights. Ask the rights owner to confirm the allowlist status and check YouTube Studio if the stream is stopped. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live 24/7; it does not clear copyright strikes or override YouTube restrictions. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo then loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
