A flag does not automatically mean every stream was deliberately manipulated or that your music will be removed. On Spotify, confirmed artificial streams can be excluded from royalties and public counts, with additional consequences—such as playlist removal or distributor action—depending on severity. If you think the activity was genuine or unsolicited, contact your label or distributor with the details; Spotify says they can work with the platform to review the case.
What a streaming flag can mean
Platforms may identify listening activity they consider artificial, including activity associated with paid stream guarantees or manipulated playlists. The specific detection methods and the facts behind an individual decision are not fully disclosed in the sources cited here. A dashboard anomaly or warning is therefore a reason to investigate, not by itself proof that you intentionally caused manipulation.

Spotify’s published policy describes several possible effects of confirmed artificial streams. The outcome depends on severity; a flag does not mean every consequence will apply.
Recommended Free Tools
- Associated royalties may be withheld.
- Public stream counts may be corrected, and the activity will not positively affect charts or recommendation algorithms.
- A track may be removed from playlists.
- Your distributor may warn you, charge a fee, suspend your account, or remove your music.
- Spotify may remove a track in severe cases.
These are Spotify-specific policy outcomes, not a universal rule for every streaming service. See Spotify’s guidance on third-party services that guarantee streams and its artist-facing explanation of artificial streaming.

Why a stream count may not match royalties
A Spotify for Artists dashboard number is not proof that the corresponding plays earned royalties. Artificial activity may remain visible in private artist data even when royalties are withheld and public figures are adjusted; in other cases, Spotify says activity may be removed before it appears in the dashboard. For royalty information, Spotify identifies the label or distributor royalty report as the most accurate source.
That distinction matters when a sudden increase appears in analytics: investigate the traffic, but use the relevant royalty statement to determine what was reported as payable.

What to do if you see a flag or suspicious spike
- Keep a record. Save the notice, its date, the track or release identifiers, and communications with your distributor or label. This is practical recordkeeping, not a platform-prescribed evidence checklist.
- Review the pattern. Spotify names sudden unexplained spikes, unexpected geographic concentration, unexplained sources such as “Other,” and short-lived follower increases as signs worth investigating. None alone establishes intent.
- Contact your label or distributor. Explain the legitimate promotion you used, identify any marketing service you hired, and share details of playlists or activity you did not arrange. If the activity appears unsolicited, say so plainly. Spotify’s published route for artists who believe streams were authentic is to have their label or distributor work with Spotify on a review. See Spotify’s artist guidance.
- Report suspicious playlists. Spotify provides a direct way to report playlists suspected of artificial streaming through its playlist reporting page. For another service, use that platform’s own current reporting channel; processes differ.
- Stop any unclear paid promotion. Do not use bots, scripts, looping, or coordinated inauthentic listening. Avoid services that promise guaranteed streams or playlist placement, and discontinue a service if it cannot explain its methods.
- Check the royalty report. Compare the distributor or label statement with the artist dashboard rather than assuming a visible play count generated royalties.
Why guaranteed-stream offers are risky
Spotify prohibits third-party services that promise streams or playlist placement in exchange for money. A marketer may promote music legitimately, but the artist should understand the methods being used and avoid any arrangement that guarantees a stream total or placement. Spotify recommends researching a marketer’s approach and reviews.

Apple Music Provider Support gives a similar warning to providers: “Any company or person that claims they can get you more plays on Apple Music for a fee is not authorized to do so by Apple.” Its page is directed to labels and distributors, so it is not a complete artist appeal guide. How the published guidance differs by platform
| Platform or source | What its guidance establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Confirmed artificial activity may affect royalties, public counts, charts, recommendations, playlists, and—in more serious cases—distribution or track availability. Artists who believe streams were authentic should work through their label or distributor; suspicious playlists can also be reported directly. | A flag alone does not prove deliberate misconduct, and Spotify does not promise that a review will overturn a decision. |
| Apple Music Provider Support | Its provider guidance discusses monitoring reports, payout adjustments, paid play-increase claims, and human review before a suspected manipulation incident results in a takedown. | The page is aimed at labels and distributors; it does not set out a full artist appeal process or the outcome for every flag. |
| Other services | IMPALA’s April 2024 guide describes reporting routes as platform-specific and notes that resolving an incident may involve exchanges among a platform, label, and distributor. | It does not make Spotify’s penalties or review procedure applicable to every service. Follow the service’s current official instructions. |
For broader industry context, IMPALA reported in April 2024 that a January 2024 Pex study counted over 1 million modified audio tracks on digital service providers. That figure concerns modified tracks, not the number or rate of artificial-streaming flags. Apple’s undated provider page says manipulation rates on Apple Music were “well below 1%”; because it gives no measurement period, that should not be read as a current rate.
