When a drone detects that its control link has been lost, it follows the response configured for that aircraft: it may return to a home point, hold position, land, or take another action. Some systems wait for a timeout or try to reconnect first. There is no universal behavior, so the exact result depends on the drone, flight-control software, settings, flight mode, which link failed, and whether the aircraft has the navigation information its response needs.
What does “lost control link” mean?
The phrase can refer to different connections. A pilot’s radio-control (RC) link carries flight commands. A telemetry or data link connects a ground station to the aircraft and may carry status information or mission commands. Flight-control systems can treat these losses separately, with different detection timeouts and responses.
PX4 defines its telemetry case this way: “The Data Link Loss failsafe is triggered if a telemetry link (connection to ground station) is lost.” That definition concerns the ground-station connection, not necessarily loss of the pilot’s RC control. PX4 and ArduPilot both document separate handling for different link-loss conditions.
What can a drone do after detecting link loss?
A failsafe is a configured response, not a promise that every drone will fly home. Common choices have different consequences, and their precise behavior depends on the aircraft and its setup.

For a return action, a home point alone is not enough to assume the aircraft can get there safely. DJI’s developer documentation says the RTH behavior it describes requires a successfully recorded Home Point and a functioning compass. Requirements and route behavior differ by product; the model’s manual and current app or flight-controller settings are the relevant references.
Why timing and link recovery matter
The aircraft does not necessarily act the instant a signal drops. It may wait for a configured timeout, use a staged response, or try to reacquire the link before carrying out the next action. The timer and sequence are specific to the model or flight stack.

PX4 v1.14 exposes loss-timeout settings and separates manual-control loss from telemetry/data-link loss. ArduPilot Plane documents short and long failsafe phases with programmable responses. DJI support material likewise gives model-specific signal-loss triggers and behavior. Do not apply one aircraft’s timer or sequence to another.
Link recovery is also implementation-specific: check whether regaining the connection restores pilot control, changes the failsafe action, or leaves the aircraft continuing its return or landing sequence. The available documentation does not establish one recovery rule for all drones.

How documented systems differ
DJI aircraft
DJI support material describes configurable connection-loss behavior and aircraft-specific examples of FailSafe RTH. Trigger timing and behavior vary between models. The Home Point and navigation prerequisites described in DJI’s developer documentation apply to the documented RTH behavior, not automatically to every aircraft or situation.
PX4
PX4’s v1.14 safety guide handles manual-control loss and telemetry/data-link loss as distinct failsafe categories. Depending on the category and configuration, available actions include Disabled, Hold/Loiter, Return, Land, Disarm, and Terminate. Settings include loss timeouts and exceptions. If multiple failsafes occur, the action taken can depend on their configuration and priority.

ArduPilot Plane
ArduPilot’s Plane documentation describes RC and optional ground-control-station (GCS) failsafes, including short and long phases and programmable responses. These details are for Plane; they should not be assumed to describe Copter or other firmware. The documentation also notes limitations: its failsafe does not detect every individual RC-channel failure or autopilot hardware or software fault.
Historical aircraft examples
Older aircraft documents illustrate why a timing or sequence should not be treated as universal. A 2014 DJI Phantom procedure hosted in an FAA exemption document describes beginning a return after 3 seconds without signal, then hovering for 15 seconds before landing. An FAA-hosted description of the Nova R8400 says that aircraft first tries to reacquire the link for 10 seconds, then navigates to a home waypoint, hovers there for 30 seconds, and proceeds through its landing procedure. These are historical or aircraft-specific examples, not current settings advice for other models.

What to check before flying
Use the aircraft’s exact model manual and the current settings in its app or flight-controller setup. Confirm these points before relying on a lost-link response:
- Which connection is covered: pilot RC, telemetry/GCS, or both.
- The detection timeout and whether the aircraft tries to reconnect first.
- The selected action, any staged response, and what happens if the link returns.
- Whether a home point is recorded and which sensors or navigation conditions the selected action requires.
- Return route and altitude behavior, plus any model-specific limitations involving battery, obstacles, terrain, or flight mode.
Do not test a failsafe by switching off a transmitter during flight. Use only the manufacturer’s approved preflight checks or simulation procedures. A failsafe is one layer of risk management, not a guarantee that the aircraft will reach home or avoid a crash.
