What Happens When a Bond Is Redeemed at Maturity—and When It Is Called Early?

At maturity, a bond repays principal and stops earning interest. An early call lets the issuer redeem under the call terms, ending future coupons on the amount called.

At a bond’s stated maturity date, the issuer repays the principal under the security’s terms and the bond stops accruing interest. If a callable bond is redeemed early, the issuer uses a contractual call right, pays the applicable call price for the amount called, and ends future coupon payments on that amount. The date, price, notice, interest calculation and whether only part of your holding is redeemed all come from that bond’s governing documents.

The two events at a glance

“Redemption” means repayment of a bond. Redemption at maturity is the scheduled end of the investment. An early call is an issuer-initiated redemption before that scheduled date. It is different from your decision to sell a bond in the secondary market.

Feature Redemption at maturity Early call
Who determines the date? The stated maturity date in the bond terms. The issuer, using a call right on a date allowed by the bond terms.
What principal is paid? The principal amount due under the security’s terms. The applicable call price for the amount called.
What happens to later interest? Interest accrual ends at maturity. Coupon payment timing depends on the instrument. Future coupons on the redeemed amount stop when the call takes effect.
Main uncertainty for the investor Whether payment is made as promised and how to use the proceeds. An earlier-than-planned end to income and the possibility of reinvesting at a lower rate.

The table is a general framework, not a substitute for the offering document. Bonds can have different notice periods, premiums, call schedules, partial-redemption rules and accrued-interest provisions.

What redemption at maturity means

Maturity is the contractual end date

A bond’s maturity date is fixed when the security is issued. On that date, the issuer is scheduled to pay the face value or other principal specified in the terms. TreasuryDirect defines maturity for Treasury marketable securities as the date when face value, or inflation-adjusted principal, is paid and the security stops earning interest. Other issuers use their own governing documents, but the same basic principle applies: the maturity date ends the bond’s contractual life.

“This is the date on which the face value, or inflation-adjusted principal, of a security is paid to the investor. The security also stops earning interest on this date.”

— TreasuryDirect, Glossary for Treasury Marketable Securities

What money you receive

You normally receive the principal due at maturity plus any interest that the instrument’s terms make payable. A coupon bond may have paid its final coupon on the regular schedule, or the final interest amount may be included in the maturity payment, depending on the security. TreasuryDirect describes redemption as payment of principal and accrued interest at maturity, or, where permitted, at the owner’s option before maturity. Do not assume every corporate, municipal or agency bond uses the same final-coupon or accrued-interest convention.

Does the process happen automatically?

For a bond held through a brokerage or other account, the issuer or paying agent generally sends the redemption proceeds through the account’s normal settlement process. The exact posting date, cash balance treatment and reinvestment instructions are account-specific. Check the account statement and the bond’s terms rather than assuming the money will arrive on the same day as the calendar maturity date.

If you hold a Treasury security directly, TreasuryDirect’s payment rules and registration details control. For a bond held in a retirement, trust or joint account, the account’s own cash and tax handling can affect what you see even though the bond itself matured on a fixed date.

What an early call is

The issuer, not the investor, exercises the option

A call provision gives the issuer the right to redeem a bond before its stated maturity. The issuer can exercise that right only as allowed by the contract: for example, after a first call date, during specified windows, or under a listed schedule. A callable bond is not automatically called merely because it has become profitable for the issuer to do so.

Why issuers call bonds

FINRA explains that issuers often call bonds when market interest rates fall. Refinancing at a lower rate can reduce the issuer’s borrowing cost. The decision remains the issuer’s; a fall in rates creates an incentive, not a guarantee, that a call will occur.

What you are paid

The call notice and bond terms state the call price or formula. It may be par value, a premium above par, or another amount that changes by date. The amount you originally paid is not the controlling figure: if you bought the bond above or below par, the call proceeds can differ from your purchase price. The available information does not establish one universal rule for premiums, discounts or accrued interest, so use the security’s official notice and offering documents.

Can only part of the position be called?

Some issues permit partial redemptions. If that happens, the notice should identify the amount affected and how the selected bonds or units are allocated. Do not assume that an entire brokerage position disappears when the notice refers to a partial call, or that a partial call will be allocated in the same way by every broker.

How interest changes in each case

At maturity

Interest accrual ends on the maturity date. You receive no additional coupon for days after that date. Whether the last coupon is paid separately, together with principal, or under another schedule depends on the instrument.

After an early call

Once the call takes effect, future coupons on the redeemed amount stop. A call notice should identify the date through which interest is calculated or paid, but the precise treatment of accrued interest is security- and account-specific. If only part of the position is called, coupons continue on the portion that remains outstanding.

Do not confuse a call with selling

If you place a sell order before maturity, you are selling to a market buyer at the available price. The issuer has not redeemed the bond, and the buyer becomes entitled to future payments under the trade’s settlement terms. A call is different: the issuer exercises a contractual right and pays the call amount through the paying agent or account intermediary.

Read these terms before buying or holding a callable bond

FINRA’s bond-investing guidance identifies maturity, yield and call status as core due-diligence factors. Before relying on a coupon or projected income stream, locate the following items in the official offering documents, trade confirmation or account record:

  • Maturity date: the scheduled date for final principal repayment.
  • Callable status: whether the issuer has a call right at all.
  • First call date and schedule: the earliest permitted date and any later dates or windows.
  • Call price or formula: the amount payable on each eligible date.
  • Partial-redemption language: whether part of an issue or account position can be called and how allocation works.
  • Coupon schedule: payment frequency, rate, day-count provisions and the stated final interest date.
  • Yield measures: yield to maturity, yield to call and, when supplied, yield to worst.
  • Credit and tax information: issuer credit characteristics, tax treatment and any jurisdiction-specific provisions.
  • Notice method: how the issuer and your broker communicate a call and where payment instructions appear.

FINRA’s “Just the Facts…Bond Facts” materials highlight maturity, yield, credit rating and call status as information investors should examine. A yield-to-maturity figure alone can overstate how long your income lasts if the bond is likely to be called earlier; compare it with the applicable call scenarios and the price you paid.

What to do when a call notice arrives

  1. Confirm the security. Match the CUSIP or other identifier, account and quantity in the notice with your records.
  2. Read the effective date and price. Check the amount being redeemed, the call price or formula, and the date interest stops or is calculated through.
  3. Check for a partial call. Determine how many units remain and whether the broker describes an allocation procedure.
  4. Compare the notice with the original terms. Verify that the stated call date is permitted by the first-call date and schedule in the offering documents.
  5. Review the account posting. After settlement, compare principal, any stated interest and fees with the notice. Keep the notice and statement for your records.
  6. Make a reinvestment plan. Decide whether to hold cash, replace the income with another security, or change duration and credit exposure. Current market yields may be lower than the called bond’s coupon.
  7. Ask the intermediary about discrepancies. If the amount, date or interest treatment does not match the notice, contact the broker or paying agent before assuming the issuer failed to pay.

Call and reinvestment risk

The main investor risk is that a call ends an attractive coupon stream earlier than expected. If rates have fallen, comparable new bonds may offer less income. You may also lose the opportunity for further price appreciation: a callable bond’s market price can be constrained as it approaches the amount the issuer would pay to call it, because investors recognize that a profitable call could limit additional upside.

This does not mean every callable bond will trade exactly at its call price or that rates alone determine its price. Credit quality, time to the call date, the call premium, market liquidity and the probability of issuer action all matter. Treat yield-to-call and yield-to-worst as scenario measures, not promises that the issuer will exercise the option.

A Treasury-specific qualification

TreasuryDirect states that only certain Treasury bonds issued before 1985 are subject to calls. For those securities, TreasuryDirect states the date on which interest will stop when the bond is called. This historical Treasury rule does not apply to corporate or municipal bonds, which follow their own contracts. If you own an older Treasury bond, rely on the security’s Treasury notice and registration records for the applicable date and payment details.

Illustrative timelines

Scheduled maturity

Suppose a bond lists June 1, 2030, as its maturity date. Until that date, coupons are paid according to the stated schedule. On June 1, the issuer pays the principal required by the terms, interest accrual ends, and no later coupons are due. The actual account posting can follow the intermediary’s settlement process.

Early call

Suppose the same bond permits a call beginning June 1, 2027, at a stated call price. If the issuer sends a valid notice for that date, the called amount is redeemed in 2027 rather than 2030. Coupons after the effective call date are not paid on that amount, and the proceeds may need to be reinvested at the rates available in 2027.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Partial call

If the contract permits a partial call and only a portion of your holding is selected, you receive the applicable call proceeds for that portion. The uncalled balance remains outstanding and continues under its terms, including its future coupon and maturity provisions.

Tax, records and unresolved details

Tax treatment can depend on the issuer, account type, purchase price, jurisdiction and whether the security was bought at a premium or discount. Keep the trade confirmation, call notice, maturity statement and account statement. Use applicable tax guidance or a qualified adviser for your situation; a general description of redemption mechanics cannot determine your tax result.

Payment timing, accrued-interest treatment, call notice periods, partial-call allocation and the treatment of premiums or discounts are not universal. The controlling sources are the bond’s official offering documents, the issuer or paying agent’s notice and your broker’s account records.

Bottom line

Maturity is the date the bond is scheduled to end: principal is repaid under the terms and interest stops accruing. An early call is an issuer decision permitted by a call provision: the applicable call price is paid for the amount called and future coupons on that amount end. Check the maturity and call schedules, price, notice, interest date and partial-redemption rules before deciding how to use or reinvest the proceeds.
