That only happens if a participating nearby device detects it. Otherwise, the app may show an earlier location, and features such as ringing or nearby directions may not work.
What “out of range” means
It means your phone cannot make a direct Bluetooth connection to the tracker at that moment. It does not necessarily mean the tracker has stopped working or that its location can never update. Direct connection and network-assisted location are separate: a compatible nearby device may detect the tag and relay a report even when your phone is far away.

A Bluetooth tracker is not a standalone GPS device, and it does not provide guaranteed, continuous live tracking. Avoid treating a location shown in the app as a live position unless the service indicates that it has just been updated.

It can, if the tracker supports a finding network and a participating device detects it. For example, Google describes Find Hub as a crowdsourced network in which nearby participating Android devices detect compatible items over Bluetooth and securely send location information. Whether an offline Android device can be found also depends on the owner’s offline-finding settings, which range from no network participation to finding in busy places or everywhere. If there is no recent network detection, the app may have no new location to show. In Find Hub, Google says an offline device can appear at its last online location, based on encrypted stored location. That specific behavior should not be assumed for every tracker service; check the app’s wording and the time of its last update.
Apple describes AirTag and compatible Find My items as Bluetooth location-tracking devices. Their location reporting likewise depends on the supported service and available detections; an owner’s phone being out of direct range does not, by itself, establish where the item is now. What you can do when you are away from the tracker
When there is no direct Bluetooth connection, actions that require a nearby connection may be unavailable. You may not be able to ring the tag or use a close-range directional-finding feature. Google notes that playing a sound from an unknown-tracker alert can fail if the tracker is outside the phone’s Bluetooth range, is no longer nearby, or its device ID has changed. Google’s “Find nearby” feature is limited to compatible Find Hub network trackers. Google lists the limits and steps for finding unknown trackers.
There is no single Bluetooth range number that applies to every tag and phone. The connection depends on the particular devices and surroundings, so use the tracker app’s connection status rather than assuming a fixed distance.

Will your phone alert you if you leave the tracker behind?
Do not assume so. A notification for an item left behind is an owner-facing separation alert; its availability and behavior depend on the tracker, app, phone, and settings. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal separation alert across tracker brands. Check the product and app documentation for whether that feature is supported and how to enable it.

An unwanted-tracker alert is a safety feature for someone whose phone detects an unknown compatible tracker moving with them over time. It is not the same as an owner being warned that their own item has been left behind. Apple and Google announced cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts on May 13, 2024; Apple described implementation in iOS 17.5 and Google support on Android 6.0 and later for compatible devices. Current availability and steps can vary by operating-system version, region, and tracker compatibility. Apple’s announcement describes the cross-platform support and versions at launch.

Google says Android alerts cover Find Hub-compatible tags, headphones, and Apple AirTags. If you receive an alert, use the instructions on your phone and the tracker maker’s guidance; a manual scan may also be available. Google’s current help page explains alert maps, detection tools, and next steps.

If an unknown tracker may be moving with you
- Open the alert and review its map and identifying information. Follow the phone’s prompts for supported sound or nearby-finding tools; those tools may not work if the tracker is out of Bluetooth range or no longer present.
- If you need help identifying the tracker or preserving information, follow the instructions in the alert and the manufacturer’s guidance before disabling it.
- Use the manufacturer’s instructions to disable the tracker. Turning off Bluetooth or Location Services on your own phone does not prevent the tracker from sharing its location with its owner.
- If you feel unsafe, go to a public place and contact law enforcement or someone you trust.
