After you claim an eligible Xbox disc-to-digital entitlement, you can play without inserting the disc each time—but you must keep the qualifying disc. Microsoft says the digital access remains conditional on possessing it and may be suspended or revoked if you no longer do. The disc itself continues to work.
What changes when you claim the digital entitlement?
Claiming gives you a way to access the game digitally; it does not turn the disc into an unconditional digital purchase or replace the disc’s role in the license. Microsoft describes the entitlement as limited and conditioned on your continued possession of the qualifying disc. It may require you to revalidate eligibility.

Xbox says the physical disc continues to work as it always has. Once the entitlement is claimed, you do not need to insert the disc for each play, but retain it as the condition of the digital access. Microsoft’s usage rules explain the licensing condition.
Can you sell or give away the disc?
Do not assume you can pass on the disc and keep playing digitally. Microsoft says that if you no longer possess the qualifying disc, access to the digital license may be suspended or revoked. The license cannot be transferred separately from the disc. Microsoft does not describe this as an immediate automatic cancellation, so the practical point is to keep the disc if you want to preserve the entitlement.

Which discs can be converted?
The feature is for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs, and the console needs an optical drive. Xbox says Xbox 360 and original Xbox game discs are not supported. Not every Xbox One or Series X disc qualifies, and eligibility may change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons.
To check a disc, sign in on the supported console, insert it, and launch or play the game. Look for the console’s claim prompt; that is the practical indication that the particular disc is eligible. Xbox’s Series X FAQ provides current feature details.

Does the entitlement include PC or cloud access?
Some supported titles may offer Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming benefits after claiming, but those features depend on the individual game. The entitlement does not promise PC access or cloud play for every eligible disc. Use is also subject to compatible devices and Microsoft’s applicable account and device rules. Check the game’s support for these features rather than assuming they come with the disc-to-digital claim.
Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026, saying that “Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” “Most” is not a guarantee for any particular title; the console prompt is the relevant eligibility check.
