You may keep access, but the new owner or service may later change the app, content, plan, price, or billing arrangements. What happens depends on the service’s terms, the transition notice, and who bills you. Check your account and the service’s current official update before canceling or signing up again.
What an ownership change means for your subscription
A sale or merger does not, by itself, tell you whether your account will continue or what it will cost. The company may leave subscriptions as they are, transfer some accounts, or move customers to a different service under specific eligibility rules. Contract terms can also allow an agreement to be transferred to an acquiring company. For example, the discovery+ Terms of Use, last updated June 23, 2025, allow the provider to assign or transfer the agreement and subscription to an entity that acquires ownership or control of the platform. That is an example of one service’s terms, not a rule that applies to every streamer.

Even if your access continues, it does not necessarily mean your price, plan, app, or catalog will remain unchanged. Look for the effective date and any action required in the notice sent to you; the details may differ by country and billing method.
Current example: HBO Max and Paramount+
In its official FAQ about Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance coming together as Skydance, HBO Max said there were no immediate changes to HBO Max or Paramount+ subscriptions, pricing, apps, content, or access. It said existing subscribers could continue using the services as before and did not need to take action at that time. The FAQ also reported no immediate change to plans for bundling the services or combining their content libraries, and no immediate new app.

That is the status stated in the company FAQ, not a guarantee about future prices, apps, or catalogs. The page says it will be updated as information becomes available, so check it for current guidance before acting.
Why billing method matters
If you subscribed directly through the streaming service, its account settings and terms will usually be the first place to check. If you pay through an app store, device platform, channel, bundle, or another provider, that company may control billing and cancellation instead.

- Hulu: Its Subscriber Agreement says subscriptions obtained through a third party are billed by that provider and must be canceled through its instructions. Where the terms conflict on purchase, billing, cancellation, refunds, or payment, the third party’s terms control.
- Paramount+ in the US: Its US Terms of Use direct subscribers paying through a third party, affiliate, or another service to that provider for cancellation or payment-method changes. The terms also say third-party bundles can change in features, structure, price, and other terms.
- discovery+: Its terms say third-party billing may apply and that subscribers paying through another provider must follow that provider’s cancellation process.
Find the billing party in your account or on your payment statement. If the service’s notice says to contact a provider, use that provider’s account controls rather than assuming the streaming app can cancel or modify the charge.

A service transition can mean a transfer—or an end to the old service
A change of ownership may be accompanied by a migration, and eligibility can vary by billing route. SHOWTIME’s official transition FAQ said its standalone streaming service was discontinued, with programming made available through Paramount+ with SHOWTIME. Some subscribers billed directly by SHOWTIME, Roku, or Apple were eligible for automatic transfer; customers using certain other channels were directed to contact their provider. Subscribers who were not eligible were advised to cancel the old service before starting another to avoid overlapping subscriptions.

Do not start a replacement subscription just because you see a new service name or app. First confirm whether your existing account will transfer, when access ends, and whether you need to take action. A migration notice may specify different steps for different providers.

Price and renewal
Paramount+’s US terms allow it to change subscription prices with notice. Under those terms, a change does not take effect during the current billing period; it applies at renewal. A third-party partner’s price changes may instead be governed by that provider’s terms. Check the notice and your renewal date rather than assuming a new price starts immediately.

Content and app
Continued access does not guarantee the same catalog. The discovery+ terms say content changes regularly and can be withdrawn or become unavailable if rights-holders restrict or withdraw rights. An ownership update may also describe app or library plans, but treat those as the status stated in that update, not a promise that nothing will change later.

What to check before you act
- Read the official update and any email or in-app notice. Look for whether access continues, transfers automatically, ends on a date, or requires you to accept a new plan or take another step.
- Identify who bills you. Check the subscription page, app-store subscriptions, bundle account, or payment statement. Use that provider’s process for billing or cancellation when applicable.
- Check your renewal date and the timing of any change. Confirm whether a new price or plan takes effect immediately, at renewal, or on a stated transition date.
- Compare the old and proposed plan. Check price, features, app, content, and whether the notice says you must actively accept or cancel.
- Check cancellation and refund terms before canceling. The applicable service or billing provider’s terms determine how cancellation works; do not assume an ownership change gives every subscriber the same refund or cancellation right.
- Keep a copy of the notice. Save the message or transition instructions so you can refer to its dates and requirements if your account changes.
