What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If a bookmarking app shuts down, you may lose access to its website, sync, and export tools—and the company may eventually delete your account data. Your best protection is to export your links while you still can and keep the file somewhere outside the service. An export usually preserves bookmarks, not necessarily the pages those bookmarks point to.
What can happen when a bookmarking service closes?
A shutdown can happen in stages: the app or website may stop working first, while export or API access remains available for a limited time. After that window, the provider may delete stored data. The exact schedule depends on the company, so a shutdown announcement’s export deadline matters as much as its service-closure date.

Pocket illustrates why. Mozilla announced that Pocket would shut down on July 8, 2025, and that users could export saves until October 8, 2025. Mozilla said data would be permanently deleted after that deadline, and Pocket API read/write access also ended on October 8. Those deadlines have passed; Mozilla’s notice is not evidence that Pocket’s official export remains available now. Mozilla’s current Pocket page says the phase-out covered Pocket Web, its Android, iOS, and macOS apps, and browser extensions. Mozilla’s Pocket shutdown information and its May 22, 2025 announcement describe the dates.

A bookmark export is generally a portable list of saved URLs and related bookmark data—not a guarantee that the linked pages themselves are preserved. If a destination page is removed, moved, or made inaccessible, the exported link may no longer lead to it. The official format descriptions below document transfer of bookmarks; they do not promise a complete copy of every saved page.

Browser bookmarks: Firefox’s two backup formats
Firefox distinguishes an in-browser JSON or JSONLZ4 backup, intended for restoring bookmarks in Firefox, from an HTML export intended to move bookmarks to another browser or computer. During HTML export, Firefox lets you choose where to save the file. See Mozilla Support’s Firefox bookmark export instructions.
Hosted bookmark managers: HTML and CSV
Raindrop.io documents HTML and CSV backups. It describes HTML as suitable for transfer to a browser or another bookmarking service, and CSV as useful for working with the list in Microsoft Office or Google Sheets; both formats can be imported back into Raindrop. Its documentation also says that device-uploaded files—such as images, videos, and documents—are not included in backups. Check the service’s own format and omission details before relying on an export. Raindrop.io’s backup documentation and backup and restore overview explain its formats and scope.

How to protect your links before access ends
- Find the export or backup option while you can still sign in. Check the app’s account, settings, or data-management area. If a shutdown is announced, note the last export date separately from the service-closure date; they may differ.
- Choose a format that fits your next step. HTML is commonly intended for browser or service transfers, while CSV is easier to inspect or process in a spreadsheet. Check whether notes, tags, highlights, attachments, and other app-specific data are included; a file existing does not mean every field will transfer.
- Save the export somewhere you control. Keep a local copy and consider a second copy on separate storage, such as a USB flash drive. The exported file—not the storage device—is the essential backup.
- Verify the file. Open it to confirm it is readable. If you are moving to another app, test-import a small set before relying on the migration.
- Preserve important pages separately if needed. A URL list does not by itself archive the page content. The documentation cited here does not promise that a bookmarks export contains full text or offline copies of linked pages.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Export formats and import compatibility | A portable HTML or CSV file can be more useful than a backup readable only by the original app. Confirm that the destination accepts the format. |
| Metadata and attachments | Notes, tags, highlights, and uploaded files may not be included or may not transfer cleanly. Raindrop.io, for example, says device-uploaded files are excluded from its backups. Source |
| Links versus page copies | Determine whether the product stores URLs only or preserves page content as well; a saved link can fail if its destination disappears. |
| Backup cadence and location | Check how often backups are made, how many are retained, and whether you can retrieve a copy outside your account. Raindrop.io’s blog says Pro accounts receive daily backups on days when data changes, keep up to 30 backups, and overwrite older ones. Source |
| Plan limits and account access | Check which export or backup features require payment and what happens to them if your plan or account changes. Raindrop.io’s current FAQ advertises free use and says Pro includes permanent copies of bookmarks, cloud backup, and full-text search; those are current provider descriptions, not a guarantee of future availability.
