A digital store closing does not necessarily erase games you already own. A platform may stop selling games but continue downloads for existing buyers; it may later end downloads, and online services can stop on a separate schedule. Whether a particular game remains playable depends on its offline requirements, account checks, and servers.
What a store closure can—and cannot—mean
“The store is closing” can describe several different changes. They do not have to happen at the same time:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sales end: you can no longer buy new games or other content through that store.
- Redownloads end: existing buyers can no longer download a purchased game or DLC again, for example after deleting it or replacing a device.
- Game services end: online multiplayer, authentication, cloud features, user-created content, or other connected functions stop. In some games, server shutdown can prevent all play.
So an installed game does not automatically stop working on the day sales end. But keeping a game installed is not a guarantee that it will remain playable: it may still require a server, an account check, or a separate launcher.

Can you still download games you already bought?
Sometimes, for a period the platform announces—or for an unspecified “foreseeable future.” That phrase does not set a permanent end date. Nintendo and Sony have both used it for certain previously purchased content, while Nintendo’s Wii Shop notice shows that redownload access can ultimately end.

Wii U and Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo ended purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023. Its support FAQ says that previously purchased games and DLC could still be redownloaded and software updates received “for the foreseeable future.” That wording does not promise access indefinitely.
PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita
Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement sets out a regional schedule for ending PS3 and Vita store purchases: PS3 purchasing closes in select Latin American markets starting in August 2026, with other Latin American and Middle Eastern countries following in late 2026; PS3 and Vita purchasing closes in other countries in July 2027. Sony says previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. Check the announcement and Sony’s service notices for scope and updates. Sony also qualifies continued play by each game’s existing online features and service availability.

Wii Shop Channel
Nintendo’s Wii Shop discontinuation notice said a later stage would end related services, including the ability to redownload purchased WiiWare, Virtual Console titles, and Wii Channels. It is a concrete reminder that “downloads continue after sales end” is not a universal or permanent rule.
Will downloaded games work offline?
That depends on the game and the platform’s settings. An offline campaign may keep working after online services end, but a game that checks an account or requires a server may not. Some games also depend on online features even when the store itself remains available.

Steam on PC
Steam Offline Mode allows some games to run without an active Steam Network connection. Steam advises signing in online, completing updates, and launching each game once before relying on Offline Mode, since a title may need additional installation or updates. Some games require an active connection or an external launcher and will not work offline; having the game files installed is not enough to establish that it will run.
PlayStation 5
Sony says that downloaded purchases can be played offline when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. A game accessed through a subscription catalog is different from a purchase: access can end if the membership lapses or the title leaves the catalog. Check Sony’s purchased-content guidance for the distinction.

What to do before access changes
- Download the games and DLC you care about while downloads are available. A sales-closure date does not necessarily mark the last day for downloads, but do not assume redownloads will continue forever.
- Update and launch each game while online. On Steam, complete updates and open the game once; then test whether it works offline before you need it that way.
- Check what the game depends on. Look for account checks, a third-party launcher, online authentication, or servers required for play. Confirm whether your entitlement is a purchase or a subscription-catalog benefit.
- Keep access to your account and the associated device. Copying game files to another drive does not transfer a license or remove account and activation requirements.
- Preserve saves separately where the platform permits it. Save files and game licenses are different things; having one does not guarantee access to the other.
- Watch notices from both the platform and the game publisher. Store downloads may continue even as a specific game’s multiplayer or other online service is retired.
How to assess a platform’s closure notice
Before relying on continued access, look for answers to these separate questions in the notice and the game’s own support information:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Can new purchases still be made, and when does that change take effect in your region?
- Can previous purchases be redownloaded? Is there a stated end date, or only an open-ended assurance?
- Can a fully installed game run offline, and does that require a setting or a successful online launch first?
- Does the game require an account check, subscription, external launcher, or server?
- Which multiplayer and other online features are ending, and when?
- Can saves or installations be moved to another device, and what account or license checks still apply?
Do not assume one company’s policy applies to another platform. The examples above establish specific Nintendo, Sony, Steam, and PS5 conditions; they do not establish a universal policy for every digital store.
