Your eligible digital Xbox games stay associated with the Microsoft account that bought or redeemed them. On a new Xbox, sign in to that same account and install games that are compatible with the console. You generally do not need to buy an eligible digital game again just because you changed consoles—but compatibility, Home Xbox settings, subscriptions, and individual game features affect what you can access.
What to do on your new Xbox
- Identify the account that owns the games. Digital purchases and content redeemed through Xbox Digital Direct are associated with the Microsoft account used for the purchase or redemption. Digital Direct applies to content included with a console; it does not move ownership of earlier purchases to a different account. See Xbox Digital Direct.
- Sign in to that account on the new console. Microsoft’s Usage Rules say Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games may be accessed or installed on a reasonable number of Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles, including a Home console or roaming consoles the user is signed into. See Microsoft Services Agreement: Usage Rules for Digital Goods.
- Find and install compatible games. The same account’s eligible library is the starting point, but a game’s availability and features depend on its compatibility with the destination console. Microsoft has a guide to moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S; the specific migration instructions are not available here to verify, so use the current guide for device-specific steps.
Will Xbox One games work on Xbox Series X|S?
Microsoft’s stated digital-game access rule covers Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, but it is not a promise that every game runs on every generation or that every title has the same features. Check the compatibility information for the specific game and console before relying on it. Moving from Xbox One to Series X|S is different from moving between consoles in the same generation because the destination must support the title.

What changes when you use a Home Xbox or another console?
Your Home Xbox setting affects sharing and offline licensing; it does not transfer ownership of a digital purchase. Microsoft’s technical documentation describes a Home console as the designated console for sharing the purchasing account’s offline licenses. Other users signed in on that console can access the purchaser’s digital games and durable content. See Microsoft Learn’s game product-sharing model.

Can you play digital Xbox games offline?
Microsoft’s licensing documentation identifies the Home console as the relevant setting for offline licenses. A roaming console generally depends on the purchasing account being signed in to Xbox services, so do not assume the same offline access there. The available official material does not establish a universal rule for every title or every offline scenario; check the game’s requirements and current Xbox guidance if offline access is essential.
What if you own a disc instead of a digital copy?
A physical disc is separate from a digital purchase: signing in to your account does not by itself turn a disc license into a digital one. Xbox Wire announced a disc-to-digital feature for supported games and said, “Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” That statement concerns eligibility for the feature, not every disc game. Check the current rollout status and supported-title information in the Xbox Wire announcement before relying on a particular disc.

Are subscription games yours permanently?
A game available through a subscription catalog is not the same as a permanent digital purchase. Check that your subscription is active and that the title remains available in the catalog; signing in on a new console does not convert catalog access into ownership.
What about saved games and other game features?
Game saves, add-ons, and title-specific features are separate from the basic entitlement to access a digital game. The official materials cited above do not establish that every save moves automatically or that every feature works identically on a replacement console. Check the specific game’s support information and Xbox’s current migration guidance for those details.
