The AI features that rely on it may stop working until you update the integration and move to a supported model or service. A notice gives you a chance to prepare; it is not a guarantee that the old endpoint will remain available indefinitely.
What “shutdown” can mean for an AI app
The impact depends on what the provider is retiring. OpenAI defines a model or endpoint shutdown as the point when it is “no longer accessible” (OpenAI API deprecations). Affected requests can fail, leaving app features that depend on those requests unavailable. Other parts of the app may continue to work if they do not rely on the retired service.

Retiring one model is not the same as retiring a whole service. A provider may remove a model while continuing to offer its other products. In a broader example, GitHub announced that GitHub Models would fully retire on July 30, 2026; its announcement covered the playground, model catalog, inference API, and bring-your-own-key endpoints (GitHub’s retirement announcement). That date is a past example of a particular service retirement, not a forecast for other providers.
A model or API retirement also does not, by itself, mean the provider company is shutting down. The relevant question for your app is which specific model, endpoint, or service it uses and what the provider says will happen to that dependency.

How much warning will you get?
There is no uniform notice period. Anthropic says it provides at least 60 days’ notice for publicly released models with upcoming retirements; that is Anthropic’s stated policy, not an industry-wide standard (Anthropic model deprecations). OpenAI cautions that preview models may receive much shorter notice (OpenAI API deprecations). Google describes dates in its lifecycle guidance as the earliest possible shutdown dates and says it will communicate exact dates (Google Vertex AI model versions).
Once a model reaches end of life, requests may fail; Amazon Bedrock states that migration does not happen automatically (Amazon Bedrock model lifecycle). Treat a retirement notice as a deadline for your own migration work, not as a promise of continued service afterward.

What to do before the deadline
- Inventory every dependency. Search your source code, configuration, secrets manager, and deployment settings for provider endpoints, model IDs, SDKs, and provider-specific features. Where available, check usage exports as well: Anthropic documents an export that shows use by API key and model (Anthropic model deprecations).
- Track lifecycle notices. Assign someone to review provider deprecation pages, release notes, email notices, and console alerts on a regular schedule. Pay particular attention to preview or experimental services, which may have shorter timelines (OpenAI API deprecations; Anthropic model deprecations).
- Choose candidates against your requirements. Check region availability, modality, context and output behavior, tool/API compatibility, data handling, operational support, and price under your workload. A provider’s suggested replacement is a candidate to evaluate, not proof that it will behave equivalently in your app (OpenAI API deprecations; Amazon Bedrock model lifecycle).
- Test with representative workloads. Use your own test cases to compare answer quality, errors, latency, tool calls, output formats, and operational metrics. OpenAI and Anthropic both advise evaluating replacements before retirement (OpenAI API deprecations; Anthropic model deprecations).
- Update and deploy deliberately. Change model IDs and any provider-specific request or response handling. Stage the change, monitor production behavior, and keep a rollback path while the old endpoint is still active. Do not rely on the platform to switch your application automatically (Amazon Bedrock model lifecycle).
- Verify data and contract details early. Check whether prompts, logs, fine-tuning artifacts, and application state can be exported, how long they are retained, and what happens when the service ends. The lifecycle guidance cited here does not establish a general right to retrieve that data after shutdown; the answer depends on the service and applicable terms.
How difficult is migration?
The effort depends on how deeply the application is tied to a particular model and provider. A 2026 study of open-source applications reported that 94% had hard-coded model identifiers. In that study’s analyzed sample, the median change was 6 added lines for prompt-only applications and nearly 700 added lines for fine-tuned applications; 8% of the migrations switched providers (2026 study of model migration in open-source applications). These figures describe that study’s sample, not a reliable estimate for an individual app. A small code change can still require substantial testing, while a larger integration may be straightforward if its behavior is well understood.
How to compare replacement options
There is no universally best replacement established by the provider guidance. Compare candidates using your actual use case rather than model names alone:

- Task quality: Does it meet your acceptance criteria on your own evaluation set?
- Integration fit: Do request formats, structured outputs, and tool calls work with your application?
- Operations: Are latency, availability, capacity, and support suitable for the workload?
- Availability: Does it support the regions and modalities you require?
- Total cost: What does it cost at your expected input, output, and usage levels?
- Data terms: How are prompts and outputs handled, and what can you export?
- Migration burden: How much code, prompt, evaluation, and operational work will the change require?
A model-routing or compatibility layer may make some future changes easier, but it cannot guarantee equivalent outputs or prevent an outage. The 2026 study’s finding that 8% of analyzed migrations switched providers does not show whether staying with a provider or moving away is best for another team (2026 study of model migration in open-source applications).
