What Happens to Tyre Particles After They Wash Off Roads?

Tyre particles washed from roads may settle in soil or sediment, enter treatment systems, or travel into rivers. Their fate depends on particle size, drainage design, storm intensity and ageing.

When rain washes tyre particles from a road, they do not all travel directly into a river. Some remain in roadside soil, some are trapped in drains or treatment ponds, some enter wastewater systems, and some reach streams and settle in sediment. Street cleaning and airborne resuspension remove or redistribute other fractions. The eventual fate depends on particle size and composition, rainfall intensity, drainage design, treatment residence time and the receiving environment.

That means “washed off” is the beginning of a branching journey, not a single destination. Larger particles are generally easier to retain, while fine particles and high storm flows are more likely to pass through controls or be carried farther. Ageing can also release tyre-related chemicals, but the long-term behaviour and ecological risk at ordinary environmental concentrations are not yet fully resolved.

What tyre particles are before rain moves them

Tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) form where a moving tyre abrades against pavement. They contain a mixture of tyre materials, road minerals and other traffic-derived matter, so their density, shape, size and chemical content vary with tyre formulation, pavement and driving conditions. Particles deposit on the lane, in road dust and on the verge rather than forming a uniform layer.

Dry weather can leave this material in place for days or weeks. Traffic vibration and wind may move a portion, while passing vehicles can resuspend smaller material into the air. A street sweeper can remove another portion before a storm. Consequently, the amount available to wash away is different from the amount generated at the tyre.

How rain divides the particles among different pathways

Once rainfall creates surface runoff, particles follow the roads’ drainage and the local terrain. The main branches are:

Stage Possible destination What controls the outcome
Road and verge Roadside soil, dust or air Wind, traffic, slope, sweeping and particle size
Gullies and channels Gully pots, ditches, canals or other deposited solids Flow speed, channel geometry and how often solids are emptied
Separate stormwater system Filter, detention pond, infiltration area or direct outfall Design, residence time, maintenance and storm intensity
Combined sewer Municipal wastewater plant or combined-sewer overflow Hydraulic loading and whether overflow structures activate
Receiving water Suspended transport or bottom sediment Particle properties, turbulence, depth and water chemistry

These routes can occur in sequence. A particle may first lodge in a gully, be flushed out during a later storm, settle in a treatment pond, and eventually be disturbed again. “Captured” therefore means retained at a particular point in time, not necessarily destroyed.

Roadside soil, drains and the atmosphere

Roadside soil where there is no runoff sewer

Where roads lack a storm sewer, runoff commonly spreads into a verge, ditch or roadside soil. The 2018 review by Wagner and colleagues identifies roadside soil as a likely transfer route and notes that some material may still reach nearby waterways. Soil can hold particles through physical trapping and attachment to organic matter, but erosion, earthworks and later storms can remobilise them.

Gully pots, channels and ditches

Coarser particles tend to drop out in gully pots, drainage channels, canals and detention areas. These solids become part of the collected sediment and require removal if the structure is to keep its storage volume. Fine particles can remain suspended longer and pass through an outlet, especially when runoff arrives rapidly.

Resuspension and street cleaning

Not all movement is waterborne. Dry traffic can lift smaller particles into the air, where they may later redeposit on roads, soil or buildings. Mechanical street cleaning removes some road dust, although the quantity removed depends on equipment, timing and whether material is collected rather than redistributed. A cleaning operation changes the pathway; it does not prove that every tyre-derived particle has been eliminated.

What drainage infrastructure does with runoff

Separate stormwater systems

In a separate system, road runoff may pass through a sedimentation basin, vegetated treatment area, cartridge or other filter before infiltration or discharge. Settling works best when water moves slowly enough for particles to fall. Short residence times, a high proportion of fine particles or a large inflow can reduce retention. A subsequent high-flow event can scour previously deposited solids and send them onward.

Combined sewers and wastewater plants

Some urban roads drain to combined sewers that carry stormwater and sewage to a municipal treatment plant. During intense rain, combined-sewer overflows can bypass treatment and release diluted sewage and road runoff to receiving waters. Even without an overflow, a sudden hydraulic surge can reduce the settling performance of tanks or flush material that had accumulated in the system.

The 2018 review found no direct performance dataset specifically measuring tyre-particle removal in municipal wastewater plants. It used microplastic studies as an approximation: removal above 90% might be expected for particles larger than 300 micrometres, with lower removal for smaller particles. That is an extrapolation, not a measured tyre-particle efficiency, and it should not be used as a universal plant guarantee.

What happens to captured solids

Particles retained in a gully, pond or filter remain in the associated sediment or filter media until maintenance removes them. Their final destination then depends on how the authority handles that material. A treatment system that appears effective at the outlet still needs a solids-management plan so that excavation, transport or disposal does not create a new release route.

When particles reach rivers, lakes and coastal waters

Suspension and settling

Particles that pass the drainage network can stay suspended while water is turbulent, then settle when velocity falls. River bends, floodplain pools, reservoirs and treatment ponds can therefore act as sinks. Monitoring reviewed in 2018 generally found concentrations declining with greater distance from roads, although the measurements were variable and sparse.

Sediment is a storage compartment, not a final answer

Bottom sediment can retain tyre-derived material for a period, but storms, floods, dredging and organisms that disturb the bed can move it again. Fine particles may travel farther before deposition, and aggregation with other road dust changes their settling behaviour. The amount retained at one site cannot be inferred reliably from a single measurement at another.

Freshwater persistence remains uncertain

The only environmental-condition degradation study identified in the 2018 review implied a half-life of about 16 months for tyre rubber particles in soil. That figure is not a freshwater half-life and is not a universal persistence estimate. A 2025 systematic review of 671 studies published from 2004 to 2024 concluded that freshwater transport, sedimentation and degradation are still incompletely quantified.

Ageing and chemical release

Sunlight, oxygen, abrasion and microbial activity can alter a particle after it leaves the road. Ageing may change its surface and promote leaching of tyre-related chemicals. Particles can also provide attachment surfaces for other pollutants, as discussed in a 2023 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency roundtable summary.

“Many questions remain regarding the ecological risks of exposure to tire wear particles.”

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2023 roundtable summary

The 2025 review specifically covers aquatic toxicological concerns involving 6PPD-quinone and zinc. Their presence does not mean every runoff event causes a measurable ecological effect: concentrations, exposure duration, species sensitivity and dilution differ widely among sites. The overall risk at realistic environmental concentrations remains unsettled.

How much material is produced and how much reaches water?

Large generation estimates should not be mistaken for aquatic releases. Wagner and colleagues’ 2018 review estimated annual tyre-wear particle generation at 1,327,000 tonnes in the European Union, 1,120,000 tonnes in the United States and 133,000 tonnes in Germany. Those are review estimates of material generated, not measurements of what entered waterways.

The same review estimated up to 11,000 tonnes per year reaching surface waters from German highways. This applies to that road network and geography; it cannot be generalised to all roads or countries. The fraction reaching water depends on how much runoff is collected, treated, infiltrated or diverted to soil.

Detection studies compiled by the 2025 review reported aquatic concentrations from 0.03 to 179 milligrams per litre. This broad range combines different environments and analytical methods, so it is not a representative concentration for every river or storm.

Why measurements disagree

Scientists face several practical problems when trying to identify tyre particles in the environment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Particle sizes span a wide range, and fine fractions are difficult to collect quantitatively.
  • Tyre material mixes with pavement minerals, brake dust, soil and organic debris.
  • Tyre formulations differ by product, market and age, changing chemical markers.
  • Storms create brief concentration peaks that routine sampling can miss.
  • Collection and identification methods are not yet fully standardised.

For those reasons, a modelled release, a field measurement and an estimate extrapolated from other microplastics are different kinds of evidence. They should not be compared as if they measured the same quantity.

Which controls capture particles most effectively?

No single treatment percentage applies to every road. A useful evaluation asks five questions about the actual system:

  1. Which sizes does it retain? Coarse particles are generally easier to settle or screen than fine particles.
  2. How does it perform during a storm peak? High hydraulic loading can shorten residence time and wash out stored sediment.
  3. Where do retained solids go? Maintenance and disposal determine whether capture is permanent or temporary.
  4. What is the water’s next route? Infiltration, a wastewater plant and a direct outfall create different exposure pathways.
  5. What local evidence exists? Site-specific monitoring is more informative than a generic claim based on another installation.

Filtration and sedimentation are common approaches in the reviewed road-runoff literature. Their performance depends on particle properties, design and hydraulic residence time. A short settling period may poorly retain fine particles, while an extreme storm can reduce retention even in a well-designed facility.

What happens next depends on the site

For a particular road, the most realistic way to trace tyre particles is to map the complete chain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify where road dust accumulates and whether sweeping occurs before rainfall.
  2. Follow kerbs, gullies, ditches and pipes to determine whether runoff enters soil, a separate storm system or a combined sewer.
  3. Locate every pond, filter, infiltration feature or wastewater process between the road and the receiving water.
  4. Check operating records for sediment removal, filter replacement and overflow activation during heavy rain.
  5. Sample both water and sediment at more than one distance from the road, because concentrations commonly vary along the flow path.

This approach distinguishes particles generated on the road from particles actually transported beyond it, and it reveals where maintenance can prevent a later flush.

The practical bottom line

After tyre particles wash off roads, some are trapped in roadside soil or drainage sediment, some are treated or infiltrated, and some reach rivers and settle or continue downstream. Fine material and intense storms make escape more likely. Captured particles can still be remobilised, and ageing can release chemicals such as 6PPD-quinone and zinc. Current evidence supports concern and better monitoring, but it does not support a single universal fate, removal percentage or ecological-risk verdict for every road and waterway.
