Photos saved on a Samsung Galaxy microSD card stay on that card when you remove it; they are unavailable on the phone until you reinsert the card. Photos stored in the phone’s internal storage remain there. A replacement card does not automatically contain the old card’s photos, so copy them elsewhere before switching cards if you want to keep them accessible.
Where your Galaxy photos are stored matters
A Galaxy phone can store photos in internal storage or on a microSD card, depending on the model and settings. Those are separate locations: removing the card affects access to files on that card, not files saved in internal storage. Samsung’s My Files instructions show the SD card as a distinct storage location.

To check, open My Files and look under Internal storage and SD card. Gallery may show images from more than one location, so seeing a photo in Gallery does not by itself tell you which storage holds its file.
What happens when you remove the card
Once the card is out, the phone cannot display or open the photos and other files stored on it. The files remain on the card if it is intact and has not been erased; reinserting the original, readable card makes them available again. Photos in internal storage are unaffected.

Unmount the card before physically removing it. Samsung’s US instructions give this path: Settings > Device care > Storage > More options > Storage settings > Unmount, then remove the card. Labels and paths can differ by Galaxy model, region, and software version. Samsung warns that removal without unmounting can cause data loss or file-system errors in its memory-card removal guidance.
What happens when you replace the card
A new card does not inherit the old card’s photos. The old photos stay on the original card unless you copy or move them, or restore them from another backup. If you insert a replacement card without transferring the files, that card will not show the old card’s contents.

Before changing cards, choose where you want the photos to live:
| Destination | What happens to the original | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Keep photos on the original card | The original remains the copy; it must be reinserted to access those files on the phone. | The original card must remain readable. |
| Copy to internal storage or the replacement card | Copy keeps the original files in place; Move relocates them. | A supported Galaxy model and enough space at the destination. |
| Copy to a computer | The card remains an additional copy if you copy rather than move. | A computer and a suitable way to connect the phone or read the card. |
| Use a cloud or device-transfer option | Whether the old files remain on the card depends on the transfer action you choose. | A supported service or transfer method and any required connection or account. |
Samsung lists PC transfer, cloud services, USB OTG, Quick Share/Nearby Share, and Smart Switch among its media-transfer options. Its guide notes that Secure Folder media cannot be transferred using the methods described there: Move photos, videos, or music from your Galaxy phone or tablet.

Copy or move files with My Files
- With the original card inserted, open My Files.
- Open SD card, select the photos or folders, and choose Copy to retain the originals or Move to relocate them.
- Choose the destination, such as internal storage or the replacement card, and complete the transfer.
- Open the destination in My Files and confirm that the files are present before formatting, erasing, or disposing of the original card.
Samsung’s instructions for moving files between locations are available in its external SD-card transfer guide. Menu wording and availability can vary by model and region.
If photos seem to disappear
- Identify which storage location was in use when the photos were saved. Check My Files under both internal storage and SD card.
- If the photos were on the old card, safely unmount the replacement card and reinsert the original. Check its SD card folder in My Files and then check Gallery.
- If you copied the photos elsewhere, check that destination or the backup service you used. A replacement card will not display files that were never copied to it.
- If a file appears in My Files but not Gallery, do not assume it has been deleted. Samsung notes that photos may be hidden from Gallery; check the file location and visibility before taking further action.
If the original card is unreadable, do not format it when you are trying to recover its contents. Samsung warns that formatting erases data on the card. Its cited support guidance does not establish a recovery procedure for a damaged or unreadable card, so avoid formatting or writing new files to it and seek an appropriate recovery option without assuming the photos can be restored.

Check card support before buying a replacement
Not every Galaxy phone or tablet has a microSD slot, and the maximum supported capacity varies by model. Check the exact model’s official specifications or support guide before purchasing a replacement card. Samsung’s US support page describes the card-standard ranges as microSD up to 2 GB, microSDHC over 2 GB to 32 GB, and microSDXC over 32 GB to 2 TB; those ranges do not mean every Galaxy accepts every capacity.

Formatting and removal are different actions
Removing a card makes its files unavailable on the phone; it does not erase them. Formatting is different: it erases the data stored on that card. Keep the original card unformatted until you have confirmed that the photos are safely copied or backed up.
