Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) said they expected their merger to close on October 6, subject to customary closing conditions. Paramount plans to combine Paramount+ and HBO Max in a shared streaming business, but the companies have not said whether existing customers will need new accounts, pay different prices, or move to another app. The expected corporate closing date is not a streaming-service launch date.
What should current subscribers do?
For now, do not cancel or buy another subscription just because of the merger. Wait for an announcement from Paramount+, HBO Max, or the company that bills you. The available announcements do not say that subscribers must take any action, and they also do not guarantee that accounts or plans will stay unchanged.

What is confirmed about the merger and streaming plans?
The corporate deal was still pending on October 3
On September 30, Paramount and WBD said they expected the transaction to close on October 6, subject to customary closing conditions. The Associated Press also reported that the companies expected that date after a federal judge approved Paramount’s settlement with states. These were expectations, not confirmation that the deal had closed. Paramount’s announcement and WBD’s closing update concern the transaction, not a subscriber migration schedule.

Paramount intends to combine streaming businesses
Paramount’s February 27 merger announcement described a combined direct-to-consumer business bringing together Paramount+, HBO Max, and Pluto TV. It also cited a combined-company film library of more than 15,000 titles and a commitment to release at least 30 theatrical films annually, 15 per studio. Those are company claims about the broader business and theatrical output; they do not establish which films will be available in a subscription catalog, when they will arrive, or what subscribers will pay. The announcement also described a presence in more than 200 countries and territories, which is not a promise that one combined subscription will be offered in every market.
What has not been announced for Paramount+ and Max customers?
The cited announcements and reporting do not establish any of the following consumer terms:
- Whether Paramount+ and HBO Max will remain separate apps, share a login, or become one app.
- Whether existing accounts will transfer automatically or require subscribers to sign up again.
- Whether current plans, prices, advertising, video quality, simultaneous streams, or downloads will change.
- How bundles, third-party billing, prepaid subscriptions, promotional credits, or renewal dates will be treated.
- When any new combined service or subscriber migration might begin.
In April, the AP reported that the future service’s name and form were unclear. Paramount CEO David Ellison said, “Our view point is, HBO should stay HBO.” That expresses a stated intention to preserve HBO’s identity; it does not say whether HBO Max will remain a separate app or become a brand within another service. The AP report covers the uncertainty over the service’s form.

Does the combination mean customers will pay for both services?
No billing outcome has been announced. The available sources do not say whether customers who already pay for both services will keep two subscriptions, receive a bundle, or be offered a replacement plan. They also do not specify any price, credit, or protection for prepaid time. Do not treat either a price freeze or a price increase as confirmed.

- Interstellar [Blu-ray]
Axios quoted Ellison saying, “Combining the streaming services will enhance competition and deliver viewers a truly compelling offer.” That is the executive’s claim about the intended combination, not a measured finding or a published savings promise. Axios’s March 2 report covered the investor-call plan.
How to assess any future plan announcement
When the companies publish subscriber options, compare the terms that affect what you actually watch and pay. Availability and rights can vary by country, so check the offer for your location rather than assuming a global catalog or plan.
- Total cost: monthly price, taxes, ads, promotional period, and renewal price.
- Content where you live: catalog, live sports, and news rights in your country.
- Viewing limits: video quality, simultaneous streams, downloads, and supported devices.
- Account and billing continuity: login changes, billing provider, prepaid time, and credits.
- Exit terms: cancellation rules, bundle requirements, and what happens to an existing promotion.
None of these combined-plan details can be evaluated from the announcements currently available.
