In Google Messages, turning RCS off and on can remove you from RCS group chats. On iPhone, Messages chooses a message type based on your settings, connection and carrier plan; Apple does not promise that an existing RCS group will always convert or remain unchanged. The outcome also depends on whether the fallback is group MMS or individual-reply SMS.
First, distinguish an RCS toggle from a temporary fallback
“Switching to SMS” can mean different things: you deliberately turned off RCS, your phone temporarily lost an RCS connection, or one message was sent using SMS or MMS. Those situations are not interchangeable. A protocol fallback for one message does not necessarily mean the group itself has been permanently converted.

SMS and MMS also behave differently in groups. Group MMS can keep a shared conversation, while group SMS—called “mass text” in Google Messages—can send replies as separate messages. Check the app’s message-type indicator where available, but do not treat an iPhone green bubble as proof that a message used SMS: Apple says RCS and SMS/MMS messages all appear green.

Turning RCS off and on
Google Messages gives a clear warning: “It’s not advised to turn RCS chats on and off. If you do, you’ll be removed from group chats.” That means a deliberate RCS toggle can affect your membership in RCS groups; do not assume the same group will automatically rejoin when you turn RCS back on. Google’s guidance does not establish one recovery path for every group.

Google lets you choose how group messages work. With group MMS, replies go to all recipients in the shared conversation. With mass-text SMS, replies arrive as individual conversations. The setting is under Google Messages > profile picture or initial > Messages settings > Advanced > Group messaging; labels or availability may vary by app version and device.
Temporary loss of RCS
A brief RCS connection problem is different from turning RCS off. Google says group messages can split into individual one-to-one conversations if a member temporarily loses RCS connectivity; the group usually restores when that sender reconnects to RCS. This is not a guarantee that a group affected by a deliberate toggle will be restored in the same way.

Membership and non-RCS contacts
Google says people can be removed from RCS conversations, but not from SMS or MMS groups. If a contact does not have RCS, adding that person creates an MMS chat. Whether a participant can be added or removed also depends on the group’s supported controls.
What happens in iPhone Messages
On iPhone, Messages selects the message type automatically based on settings, network connection and carrier plan. RCS is available on iPhone with iOS 18 and a supporting carrier plan in regions where it is offered. Apple documents the setting at Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging.

Apple’s guidance does not say that disabling RCS will preserve every existing RCS group as an identical SMS or MMS thread. The exact result depends on the participants’ devices and settings, carrier support and the message type available to the conversation. Confirm that your carrier supports RCS and group MMS before relying on either service.
Group MMS versus group SMS: what participants see
| Behavior | Group MMS | Group SMS / mass text |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation format | Shared group conversation; everyone sees responses in the group. | Replies are sent as individual messages or conversations; recipients do not see everyone else’s responses. |
| Media | Apple says group MMS supports photos and videos. | Apple says group SMS does not support multimedia attachments. |
| RCS features | Do not assume MMS provides the RCS feature set. | Do not assume SMS provides the RCS feature set. |
These are platform descriptions, not guarantees for every carrier configuration. Apple lists high-resolution photos and videos, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators among group RCS features; SMS/MMS does not provide that same documented RCS feature set. The precise features available can vary by app, carrier and setup.

How to check before changing settings
- Identify the change. Decide whether you are disabling RCS, troubleshooting a temporary connection loss, or sending a message that falls back to SMS/MMS.
- Check the app’s group mode. In Google Messages, review Messages settings > Advanced > Group messaging to see whether replies go to all recipients as group MMS or arrive individually as mass text.
- Check support. On iPhone, verify that your carrier and region support RCS and group MMS; Google Messages also needs RCS connectivity for RCS chats.
- Consider group continuity before toggling. If you use Google Messages, take its removal warning seriously before switching RCS off. If you use iPhone Messages, do not assume an existing RCS thread will convert in a particular way.
Privacy and security on fallback
Do not assume that a message sent as SMS or MMS has RCS or iMessage encryption. Apple says SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted. This is a separate issue from whether the group remains shared or whether replies arrive individually.
