What Happens to E-Waste After You Recycle It?

E-waste may be refurbished for reuse or sorted, dismantled, and processed to recover materials. The route depends on the device and the recycler.

After you drop off an old phone, computer, TV, or appliance, it may be checked for reuse or sent to a recycling facility. Reusable equipment can be repaired or refurbished for resale; items that are recycled are typically sorted, dismantled, separated into material streams, and processed to recover usable materials. The exact route depends on the device, its condition, local rules, and the recycler’s downstream partners.

What happens after an electronic device is collected?

Collection is the start of a chain, not a guarantee that a device will be shredded or turned into a new product. A program may send usable equipment for reuse or refurbishment, while other items go through recycling operations. A recycler’s specific handling depends on what it accepts and how it manages the equipment and materials afterward.

Usable devices may be reused or refurbished

Some collection programs route equipment that still has a useful purpose to facilities for reuse, repair, refurbishment, and resale. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes refurbishment as updating and repairing electronics for resale. Extending a product’s life can reduce demand for new raw materials, but not every collected item is suitable for refurbishment and resale is not guaranteed. EPA explains reuse and electronics recycling.

Items sent for recycling are sorted and dismantled

For equipment that is recycled, the process generally involves sorting and dismantling, followed by mechanical separation and recovery of materials. As the EPA puts it, “Recycling includes sorting, dismantling, mechanically separating, and recovering valuable materials.” This is a sequence of operations, not one universal machine or step.

What materials can be recovered?

Recovered material streams can include gold, copper, glass, and aluminum, which may return to manufacturing supply chains. Those are examples, not a promise that every device contains or yields each material. The mix depends on the device and how it is processed. Nor does recovery mean that every part becomes a new electronic device: different materials may have different downstream uses, and some material may remain as residue.

What happens to hazardous parts and leftover material?

Electronics can contain hazardous substances, and poor handling can put human health and the environment at risk. That does not mean every electronic item or component is hazardous. The Basel Convention covers certain hazardous equipment, components, and processing fractions, while the European Commission describes waste electrical and electronic equipment as a complex mixture that can contain hazardous materials.

Responsible management matters both during processing and for materials that are not recovered. Ask a recycler how it manages hazardous components and residual material rather than assuming every fraction is recovered. Basel Convention FAQs explain the e-waste amendments; the European Commission’s WEEE overview describes the EU context.

Can recycled electronics be shipped to another country?

Some equipment and processing fractions may cross borders. From January 1, 2025, Basel Convention Parties apply prior informed consent controls to covered international shipments of both hazardous and non-hazardous e-waste and scrap for recovery or disposal. Whether a shipment is covered, and what obligations apply, depends on its classification and the rules of the countries involved. Used equipment intended for direct reuse, repair, or refurbishment may also be classified differently under different national laws; it is not automatically waste or automatically exempt.

These are international shipment rules, not a description of where every collected device goes. For a particular shipment, consult the relevant country requirements and the EPA’s summary of new international requirements.

How to choose a recycler and find out what it does

In the United States, the EPA recommends using certified electronics recyclers. It identifies R2 and e-Stewards as the two accredited certification standards; these standards address environmental practices, worker health and safety, security, and downstream management. Certification is a useful screening criterion, but it does not by itself establish the destination of a particular device or which materials will be recovered.

  1. Find a take-back program, community drop-off, retailer program, or recycler that accepts your specific device.
  2. Check whether the provider currently holds certification to an EPA-identified accredited standard. The EPA’s certified-recycler page provides information for the United States.
  3. Ask whether the provider evaluates equipment for reuse or refurbishment and how it handles items that cannot be reused.
  4. Confirm whether it accepts the device’s batteries, whether there are fees, how it handles data destruction, and what it does with residual material.

Certification standards involve independent audits and ongoing oversight, but acceptance rules and specific downstream practices vary by provider. Check the provider’s current certification, location, accepted items, and handling details. Unless the provider documents a device’s destination, do not assume a particular outcome.
