Usually, the 12-month warning refers to an inactive Yahoo Mail mailbox—not a rule that a stranger can claim your old email address. Yahoo says an untouched mailbox can stop receiving new messages and have its contents deleted after 12 months, but it also says a permanently deleted Yahoo ID is not made available to anyone else. Google and Microsoft describe two-year inactivity periods for personal accounts, with different consequences.
What happens to an old email address?
Three things are easy to conflate: a mailbox becoming inactive, an account being closed, and an email address being reassigned. A provider may delete messages or close an account without making its former address available to another person. The policies reviewed for Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft do not support a universal rule that a stranger can get your address after 12 months.

| Provider | Published inactivity rule | What may happen | What the policy says about address reuse |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yahoo Mail | 12 months without accessing the mailbox | The mailbox stops receiving new messages; messages, folders, contacts, and settings are permanently deleted. | Yahoo says permanently deleted Yahoo IDs are not made available to anyone else. |
| Google personal accounts | Two years without activity | Google reserves the right to delete account content and data, and says it sends notifications before deletion. | The policy reviewed does not establish whether a Gmail address is reassigned. |
| Microsoft accounts | Generally, sign in at least once within two years, subject to exceptions | Microsoft may close an inactive account. | Microsoft says addresses used for Microsoft accounts cannot be reused to create a new account. |

What Yahoo’s 12-month rule actually requires
Yahoo’s threshold is about accessing Yahoo Mail. Yahoo says an inactive mailbox stops receiving new email and that its messages, folders, contacts, and settings are permanently deleted. Signing in to the broader Yahoo account alone does not count; Yahoo says to access the mailbox itself at least once every 12 months. Its help page also describes advance reminders and says a paid Mail Plus subscription may keep a mailbox active while the subscription remains active; availability varies by region. Check Yahoo’s current inactive-mailbox guidance for the applicable details.
Mailbox deletion does not mean the address is handed to someone else. Yahoo’s separate page, “Can I reuse my deactivated Yahoo ID?”, says a permanently deleted Yahoo ID cannot be used again and is not made available to anyone else.

What counts as activity on Google and Microsoft?
Personal Google accounts
Google says a personal Google Account can be considered inactive after two years without use, and its content and data may be deleted. Activity can include reading or sending Gmail, using Drive, watching YouTube, or using Google Search while signed in. The policy excludes accounts set up through work, school, or another organization. Google’s two-year period is an inactivity threshold, not evidence that another person can claim the Gmail address.
Microsoft accounts
Microsoft’s policy generally requires signing in within a two-year period to keep an account active, although it lists exceptions. Its separate account-creation guidance says an address used for a Microsoft account cannot be reused to create a new one, even after the account is closed. Read the Microsoft activity policy for its exceptions and the account-creation guidance for the address rule.

How to reduce the risk to accounts tied to an old address
- Keep access while you still can. For Yahoo, open the Yahoo Mail mailbox at least once every 12 months if you want to keep it active. For personal Google and Microsoft accounts, use the account within the applicable two-year period; Google lists activity across signed-in Google services, while Microsoft’s rule has exceptions.
- Update important services. While you can still access the old address, replace it in the recovery-address and contact-information settings of important accounts. Check services that use it for sign-in, password recovery, receipts, or security notices.
- Do not assume forwarding or incoming mail keeps an account active. Yahoo specifically says accessing the mailbox is required. Do not treat mail delivery or forwarding as proof of activity unless your provider says it counts.
Updating an address is a practical way to reduce dependence on an old mailbox; it does not guarantee that a provider or another service can recover a closed account. The policies above establish rules only for the named providers, not every email service, country, organization-managed account, or custom-domain arrangement.
