What Happens to a Satellite Launch If Weather Causes a Delay?

When weather threatens safety, launch teams hold liftoff and reassess the conditions and remaining launch window. The next attempt may be soon or much later, depending on the mission.

If weather makes a launch unsafe, the team holds or delays liftoff, then checks whether conditions improve while the mission’s launch window is still open. If that opportunity closes, managers look for a later one that satisfies both safety rules and the mission’s timing needs. The wait could be brief or longer; a next-day attempt is possible, not guaranteed.

Why weather can stop a satellite launch

Launch teams consider conditions both at the pad and along the rocket’s flight path. Storms, thick clouds, wind shear, lightning, precipitation, or other hazards can affect whether a vehicle can launch safely. The exact concerns and limits depend on the rocket, launch site, and mission.

For NASA–SpaceX crew operations on the Eastern Range, NASA says teams will delay liftoff if conditions such as storms, thick clouds, or wind shear could affect the rocket. That is an example of one operation, not a universal checklist for every satellite launch. NASA’s description of NASA–SpaceX crew launch and return operations explains that the team waits until weather is favorable.

Weather rules are mission-specific

A launch team uses defined criteria rather than relying on whether the sky simply looks clear. NASA’s Artemis I weather criteria, for example, set detailed restrictions involving wind, temperature, precipitation, lightning, and clouds. Those rules apply to Artemis I and should not be treated as limits for a different rocket or satellite mission.

What happens after a weather hold

  1. Teams monitor conditions. Weather personnel track the conditions relevant to the launch pad, rocket, and flight path.
  2. The launch team pauses if a limit is exceeded. The launch director or team does not proceed while a relevant hazard remains outside the applicable safety criteria.
  3. Managers check the remaining window. If the weather improves in time and the mission can still meet its constraints, launch may remain possible in the same opportunity. The precise countdown or hold procedure varies by vehicle and mission; there is no single procedure that applies to every launch.
  4. If the opportunity is lost, they target a later one. The next attempt must meet safety requirements and fit the mission’s objectives and timing.

A weather delay by itself does not mean that the rocket or satellite has failed or been damaged. It means the team is waiting for acceptable conditions or a suitable opportunity to proceed.

Why a clear-up does not always mean an immediate launch

A launch window is the span in which a launch can take place while satisfying safety and mission objectives, as NASA Science explains. The window may be finite. Even after local weather clears, the original opportunity may have ended, or the mission’s timing constraints may no longer be met.

Some missions depend on where Earth and a destination are in their orbits. Others have daily timing constraints shaped by Earth’s rotation or by the need to rendezvous with another spacecraft. As a result, the next suitable launch opportunity can come soon or take longer to arrive.

A short hold versus a missed window

If conditions improve while enough time remains in the window, the team may still be able to launch during that opportunity. If the window expires or the mission cannot proceed safely within it, the team must consider a later opportunity. The length of that wait is determined by the launch and mission, not by a universal weather-delay schedule.

Will the satellite launch happen the next day?

It might, but there is no rule that a weather delay means a 24-hour wait or an automatic next-day launch. NASA reported in June 2026 that weather postponed a launch of the Katalyst Space LINK servicing spacecraft and that another attempt was targeted for no earlier than the following day. That was a target for one mission, not a promise that applies to other launches. NASA’s launch update describes that case.

Launch windows can also be much shorter than a day. For a historical example, NASA announced a two-hour window opening June 25, 2024, for the GOES-U launch. Missing a limited window can mean waiting for another opportunity that meets the mission’s needs; the date and duration in that announcement are specific to that launch. NASA’s GOES-U launch announcement gives the historical details.
