What happens in a margin call?
A margin account lets you borrow money from a brokerage firm to buy securities, using securities in the account as collateral. Your equity is the account’s market value minus the amount you owe. If falling prices reduce that equity below the broker’s maintenance requirement, the account is deficient and the broker can issue a margin call.

The firm may require you to deposit cash or eligible securities. If the deficiency remains, it may sell securities to restore the required equity or pay down the loan. A call is an account and loan issue, not a guarantee that the broker will wait for you to respond before acting.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor Bulletin, “Understanding Margin Accounts,” warns: “Your brokerage firm may sell some or all of your securities without consulting you to pay off your margin loan.” Read the SEC Investor Bulletin.
In practical terms, a margin call is a notice that the broker believes the account no longer meets the equity level required under its rules. It does not necessarily mean that every asset in the account has already been sold, or that selling a particular amount will automatically resolve the problem. The amount needed can depend on the account’s current market value, loan balance, and maintenance requirement, which may change. The notice and a conversation with the broker are the starting points for determining what is happening now.
Keep the distinction between a request and a liquidation right in mind. A broker may tell you that additional funds or eligible securities are needed, but that does not mean the firm has promised to wait while you arrange them. The agreement may give the firm discretion to sell collateral, and the firm may act before a deadline it has offered. Ask directly whether liquidation has started or could begin before the time shown in the notice.

The maintenance requirement is the minimum equity the broker requires you to keep in the account. The SEC describes FINRA’s maintenance baseline as at least 25% of the total market value of margin securities. Many firms require 30% to 40%, and some require more depending on the security. A firm’s house requirement can exceed the baseline and may change; the figure that matters to you is the one applicable to your account and holdings.
A decline in the securities’ market value can lower the account’s equity even if the amount borrowed has not changed. The relationship is straightforward: equity equals market value less the amount owed. If the value falls while the loan remains outstanding, the difference between those numbers shrinks. Once equity is below the applicable maintenance requirement, the broker may demand that the deficiency be addressed.
The percentage requirement is applied to the market value of the margin securities, but a general baseline is not a substitute for the broker’s current rules. A firm can set a higher house requirement, and requirements can vary by firm and by security. That is why two investors with similar market losses may not face identical requirements, and why a percentage quoted in general investor education cannot tell you whether your particular account is in compliance.
Here is the SEC’s illustrative example, not a prediction of any particular account’s rules:

| Calculation | At 25% maintenance | At 40% maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Initial position: $16,000 in securities, funded with $8,000 borrowed and $8,000 paid by the investor | — | — |
| After market value falls to $12,000: equity is $12,000 − $8,000 borrowed = $4,000 | Required equity: $12,000 × 25% = $3,000; the example remains $1,000 above the requirement | Required equity: $12,000 × 40% = $4,800; the example has an $800 deficiency |
The initial $8,000 contribution does not stay fixed as the measure of available equity. After the market value drops to $12,000, subtracting the $8,000 loan leaves $4,000 in equity. Under a 25% requirement, $4,000 is above the $3,000 minimum. Under a 40% requirement, the minimum would be $4,800, so the same account value and loan would leave an $800 shortfall. The comparison illustrates how a higher requirement can matter even when the loan and market value are unchanged.
The example shows why a price decline does not, by itself, reveal whether an account has a call: the loan balance and applicable maintenance requirement also matter. The SEC Investor Bulletin explains maintenance requirements and the example. The Investor.gov glossary definition of a margin call also describes the broker’s discretion.
Use the example to understand the calculation, not to estimate your own deficiency. It does not establish a universal house requirement, a universal cure amount, or a universal timeline. Your broker must confirm the live market value, outstanding loan and any other amounts it includes, the requirement currently applied to your holdings, and how it calculated the notice amount.
How to respond to a margin call
- Read the notice and your margin agreement. Identify the stated deficiency, the deadline if one is given, which deposits or securities the broker will accept, the current maintenance requirement, and the agreement’s liquidation terms. Do not assume a notice grants a cure period.
- Contact the broker promptly using verified contact details. Use the number or secure channel on the broker’s official website or account statement. Ask for the current deficiency and its calculation, the accepted ways to address it, and whether liquidation has started or may begin before the stated deadline. Confirm any deadline directly rather than relying on a general rule.
- Compare the consequences of available options. A cash deposit may increase account equity but puts additional funds at risk in the account. Selling securities may reduce the loan or address a deficiency, but can realize a loss and may not fully repay the debt. Which option is appropriate depends on your circumstances; there is no universal recommendation.
- Keep a record. Save the notice and agreement, and record communications, deposits, and trades. If you dispute the amount or account calculation, ask the broker to explain it in writing and consider consulting an appropriately qualified professional.
When you contact the broker, separate the questions that can otherwise get blurred together. First, what is the exact deficiency right now, and how was it calculated? Second, what forms of payment or securities will count toward addressing it, and when must they be received? Third, what is the applicable deadline? Fourth, does the broker have the right to sell before that deadline, and has it already begun doing so? Ask the representative to clarify each answer rather than treating a general statement about the account as confirmation of all four points.
Use contact information from the firm’s official website or your account statement, rather than relying on an unverified message or phone number. The point is not to delay action while you research; it is to confirm account-specific instructions through a channel you know belongs to the broker. Save the original notice and write down the date, time, and substance of conversations. If the broker provides a calculation or instruction in writing, retain that too.
Cash and sales are different ways of responding, not interchangeable promises of a particular result. A deposit adds funds to the account and may increase its equity, but those added funds remain exposed to investment losses. A sale can reduce the amount borrowed or help address a deficiency, but it can realize a loss and may not cover the full debt. The available action and its effect depend on the broker’s calculation and rules; ask the firm what it will accept and what it expects the action to accomplish.
Do not assume that a partial deposit, a pending transfer, a proposed sale, or a particular security will satisfy the call. No general rule establishes that every broker accepts the same forms of deposit or securities, or that a transaction in progress counts before it is completed. Confirm whether the broker has received and credited the funds or securities, and whether the deficiency is still outstanding after the transaction.

The SEC advises margin investors to understand their agreements, know the risks, and ask their brokers questions. Its margin investing publication provides broader background. These practical steps do not create a guaranteed time to respond or ensure that a particular action will prevent liquidation.
Can my broker sell my stocks without telling me?
It may be able to. Investor.gov says a broker can require an immediate deposit or sell positions without notifying the investor in advance. The broker may choose which securities to sell and may act before a deadline it has offered. Check your notice and margin agreement for the rights and procedures that apply to your account; do not assume you will receive advance warning or control over which holdings are sold.
This means a margin call is not a promise of a phone call, a second warning, or a chance to choose which position is sold. The broker’s discretion matters because it may select the securities or other assets it sells. If you have received a notice, ask what liquidation rights apply and whether the firm has already acted. A deadline in the notice should not be interpreted as a guaranteed pause on liquidation unless the broker confirms that.
FINRA’s investor disclosure also warns that firms can sell securities or other assets held in accounts at the firm. It says the customer remains responsible for a shortfall if liquidation does not cover the amount owed. Read FINRA’s margin disclosure.
How long do I have to meet a margin call?
There is no single deadline established here for every broker or account. The timing can depend on the firm’s rules, the agreement, the security, and the circumstances; a broker may require immediate action or retain the right to liquidate before a stated deadline. Treat the notice as account-specific and ask the broker exactly when it may begin selling positions. A deadline in a notice should not be treated as a promise that the broker will wait until then unless the broker confirms that interpretation.
Look for the amount, date, time, and any instructions in the notice, but do not stop there. Ask whether the stated time is a deadline to deliver funds, a time by which the firm expects a response, or simply an estimate—and whether the firm may still liquidate earlier. No general source cited here establishes a standard number of hours or days. If the notice does not clearly state a deadline, ask the broker rather than inferring one from another firm’s policies or from general information online.
Even where a notice gives a date, timing can be operationally important: ask what must happen by that point for the funds or securities to count. The sources do not set a universal processing time for deposits or transfers, so do not assume that initiating a transfer is the same as the broker receiving and crediting it. Confirm the method the firm accepts and the time by which it must be available in the account.

Can I lose more than I invested?
Yes. Margin adds borrowed money to your investment exposure, so losses can exceed the cash you initially contributed. If securities are sold and the proceeds do not cover the loan and other amounts owed, you may still owe a balance. Interest on the margin loan also adds cost. The SEC outlines these risks in its margin publication, and FINRA discusses the possibility of a residual shortfall in its margin disclosure.
Liquidation does not necessarily erase the debt. If the proceeds from a sale are insufficient to pay what is owed, the customer can remain responsible for the shortfall. That is why confirming whether a sale would fully cover the balance is a relevant question for the broker, rather than assuming that the account is settled once securities have been sold. Borrowing interest adds cost while the loan remains outstanding as well.
Depositing additional cash also does not remove investment risk. It may increase equity, but it leaves more of your money exposed to the account’s holdings and any further decline. Selling may reduce exposure or loan debt, but can crystallize a loss. These tradeoffs support no single choice for every investor.
What to verify before deciding
- The exact current deficiency and how the broker calculated it.
- The maintenance requirement currently applied to your holdings, including any higher firm requirement.
- Which deposits or securities the broker will accept and when they must arrive.
- Whether liquidation has started, what the broker may sell, and whether it may act before any stated deadline.
- Whether selling or depositing funds would leave a loan balance, and what interest or other amounts remain due.
You can use these questions as a short checklist during the call with the firm. Ask for the current account figures rather than relying only on the original notice if market values or the account balance have changed. If an amount seems inconsistent with your understanding, ask the broker to explain the calculation in writing, including the requirement applied. General information here does not provide a way to independently determine a live account’s deficiency from a general example.
Keep the notice, relevant agreement, written explanations, and records of calls and account activity together. If the broker’s calculation or handling is disputed, request clarification in writing and consider consulting an appropriately qualified professional. This is a practical recordkeeping step, not a substitute for the broker’s account-specific information or professional advice about your circumstances.
These are U.S.-focused general explanations, not a calculation of your account or individualized investment advice. Only your broker can confirm your account’s live figures, applicable terms, and available procedures.

What happens when a margin call is issued?
The broker says your account equity is below the maintenance requirement that applies to it and may demand cash or eligible securities. If the deficiency remains, the broker may sell securities or other assets under the margin agreement. A call does not guarantee that the firm will wait for you to respond.
Best Value
Can my broker sell my stocks without telling me?
It may be able to sell without advance notice, choose which securities to sell, and act before a stated deadline. Review your margin agreement and ask the broker whether liquidation has started or can begin before the time in the notice.
How long do I have to meet a margin call?
There is no universal deadline. Check your notice and agreement and ask the broker what deadline applies, what must be received by then, and whether it may liquidate positions sooner.
Does a margin call mean I have already lost all my money?
No. It means the account’s equity has fallen below the broker’s maintenance requirement. However, the broker may liquidate positions, and the outcome depends on the market value, loan balance, and applicable account terms.
Can I lose more than I invested in a margin account?
Yes. Because margin involves borrowing, losses can exceed your initial contribution. If liquidation proceeds do not cover the loan and other amounts owed, you may still owe a balance; interest also adds cost.
Should I deposit cash or sell securities to meet the call?
There is no universally right choice. A deposit adds funds that remain exposed to investment losses; selling may realize a loss and may not fully repay the debt. Ask the broker which actions it accepts and what each would do to the current deficiency.
The Bottom Line
A margin call is urgent, but there is no universal deadline or one-size-fits-all response. Read the notice and agreement, contact the broker through verified channels, and confirm the deficiency, accepted ways to address it, deadline, and liquidation rights. Do not assume the firm will wait or that selling collateral will eliminate the debt.
