1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you push a self-propelled walk-behind mower with its drive disengaged, you may be able to move it manually; with the drive engaged, the mower propels itself. The controls and rolling resistance vary by model. Pushing it does not stop the blade, so use the operator’s manual for safe movement and transport.
What changes when the drive is engaged or disengaged?
| Drive state | What to expect | Model-specific detail |
|---|---|---|
| Disengaged | You supply the force to move the mower, if its design permits manual pushing. | The Scheppach DM51S manual says this model can be manually pushed with its drive lever in the standard position. |
| Engaged | The drive system propels the mower rather than leaving all movement to your push. | On the Scheppach DM51S, self-propulsion works only while the engine is running and the drive lever is activated and held. |
These examples describe the DM51S, not every self-propelled mower. Consult the operator’s manual for your exact model to identify its controls and whether it can be pushed manually.

Why might it resist rolling backward?
Some mowers may not roll freely backward immediately after self-propelling. Toro’s interactive manual advises owners of the models it covers to let the mower move slightly forward to disengage the wheel drive. If it still will not roll easily, Toro says to contact an authorized service dealer. Check that manual applies to your mower before trying this procedure; do not force a mower that will not roll normally.

Does pushing the mower stop the blade?
No. Moving the mower by hand is not the same as shutting it down, and releasing the self-propel control does not establish that the blade has stopped. The Scheppach DM51S manual warns that its blade starts rotating as soon as the engine starts. For that model, the manual directs users to switch off the engine and ensure the blade has stopped before moving the mower to or from the mowing area. Follow the shutdown and transport instructions for your own mower.

What to do if you need to move yours
- Check the operator’s manual for the drive-control position and instructions for manual movement.
- Disengage the drive only as the manual directs; do not assume that all models freewheel.
- If the mower resists rolling, stop rather than forcing it. Use the model’s specified procedure or contact an authorized service dealer.
- Before moving or transporting it, follow the manual’s shutdown procedure and confirm the blade has stopped.
The Scheppach instructions cited here are for model DM51S, product code 704349, in an Australian edition dated February 2021. Toro’s procedure applies to the models covered by its manual; neither source establishes a universal rule for every mower.
