If you leave a reusable water bottle unwashed, especially while it is damp, residue and microbial growth can build up inside it and around the lid, straw, mouthpiece, and seals. That can cause a slimy film, bad smell, or unusual taste. It is a hygiene concern, but it does not mean the bottle will inevitably make you sick.
What can build up in an unwashed bottle?
Water does not keep a bottle clean. The bottle is handled repeatedly, its mouthpiece touches your lips, and moisture can linger in narrow spaces. Bacteria, mold, residue, or a biofilm—a surface layer that can feel slimy—may accumulate, particularly where parts meet or are difficult to reach.

A bottle used for drinks other than plain water needs particular attention. Sugary drinks and protein or exercise shakes can leave residue that supports bacterial growth, so clean the bottle after those uses rather than letting it sit.

Exposure to mold or other buildup may cause problems for some people, including stomach upset, allergic reactions, or respiratory symptoms. People with mold sensitivities, asthma or other lung conditions, or weakened immune systems may have greater reason to be cautious. Serious infection is described as rare.

These are possibilities, not guaranteed outcomes. The reviewed sources do not quantify the chance of illness from a particular bottle or establish a safe number of days to leave one unwashed. A neglected bottle can be unhygienic without making every person who uses it ill.
How to tell when a bottle needs attention
Possible signs of mold or residue include visible spots, a persistent unpleasant smell, cloudy water, a film or residue, or an unusual taste. These clues do not identify a specific organism or prove contamination, but they are good reasons not to drink what is inside.

- Take the bottle apart as its design allows, wash all parts thoroughly, and let them dry completely before reuse.

How often should you wash a reusable bottle?
Recommendations differ. UNH Extension says frequent cleaning, ideally daily. Cleveland Clinic recommends rinsing daily and deep-cleaning at least weekly. An Associated Press report dated November 8, 2025, describes expert disagreement: daily cleaning with soapy water and a weekly deeper clean are common recommendations, while one physician described at least every other week as a more realistic minimum for some people who maintain other habits.
A practical routine is to wash the bottle and its parts daily when possible, and to clean it especially promptly after use with anything besides water. Rinse it daily even when you cannot do a full wash, and schedule a thorough clean at least weekly. These are hygiene recommendations, not a scientifically established cutoff between safe and unsafe.

How to clean the whole bottle
- Empty it and take it apart. Remove the lid, straw, mouthpiece, sliders, and removable seals wherever the design permits.
- Check the care instructions. Follow the bottle maker’s directions before putting any part in a dishwasher or using a stronger cleaning method; materials and seals may have different limits.
- Wash with soap and water. Use dish soap and warm or hot water as permitted. Scrub the bottle interior, lid, mouthpiece, straw, and crevices. A bottle brush can reach a narrow base; use a straw-cleaning brush inside a reusable straw.
- Rinse and dry completely. Rinse away soap, leave the pieces separated to air-dry fully, and reassemble or store the bottle only when dry.
Some sources suggest vinegar-based approaches for buildup, but those are not universal disinfection instructions. Do not mix cleaning products, and do not assume every bottle material or seal tolerates every method. For routine cleaning, soap, water, scrubbing, rinsing, thorough drying, and the manufacturer’s directions are the best-supported approach.

Ordinary buildup does not automatically mean you need a new bottle. What matters most is whether you can clean and dry every part. If you are choosing a replacement because the current one is damaged or difficult to inspect, consider whether its lid and mouthpiece come apart, whether a brush can reach the interior, and what its care instructions allow.

Clear glass makes buildup easier to see; opaque metal can hide it. UNH Extension notes that plastic is more susceptible to scratching, metal is durable but opaque, and glass is less likely to scratch but can shatter. Avoid abrasive scrubbing that could scratch a surface.
