In most cases, deleting a paid app removes only the copy installed on your device—not the store transaction. Reinstall it while signed in to the same Apple Account or Google Account, and you normally will not pay for the app again. However, deleting an app does not automatically cancel a subscription, restore every in-app purchase, or recover locally stored data.
What deleting the app actually removes
App stores associate a purchase with your account and transaction history rather than with the app file currently on your phone or tablet. That is why a previously purchased app generally shows a Redownload or Install button instead of a new price when you use the original store account.

Redownloading depends on the app still being offered, available in your region, compatible with the device and operating system, and tied to the same store account. Reinstall a paid app on iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the My Account button or your profile photo.
- Tap Apps & Purchase History.
- Tap Your Apps.
- Choose Not on this [device].
- Find the app and tap the Redownload button.

Reinstall a paid app on Android
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your Profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & device, then Manage.
- Change the filter from This device to Not installed, if needed.
- Select the app and tap Install.
The device must use the same Google Account that made the purchase. Google’s instructions are at support.google.com/googleplay/answer/113410.
If the store asks you to pay again
- Verify the store account. Sign out or switch accounts only after checking which Apple Account or Google Account paid for the app.
- Find the receipt. Apple receipts identify the Apple Account used; Google Play order history identifies the purchasing Google Account. Apple explains receipt lookup at support.apple.com/en-la/118223.
- Check Family Sharing or a family group. An eligible purchase may belong to another family member, subject to that platform’s sharing settings.
- Confirm the platform and region. An iPhone purchase does not automatically become a Google Play purchase, and availability can differ by country.
- Check compatibility and availability. The app may be delisted, discontinued, replaced, or no longer support your device or operating-system version.
- Do not buy it a second time yet. A new transaction can complicate support and refund handling.
- Contact the developer if the store recognizes the purchase but the app does not. The developer controls app functionality and its account or licensing system.
What happens to in-app purchases?
The price of downloading the app and purchases made inside it are separate entitlements. Apple says in-app purchases cannot simply be redownloaded; eligible items must be restored through the app. Apple’s restoration guidance is at developer.apple.com/documentation/storekit/restoring-purchased-products.

Try restoring an eligible purchase
- Reinstall the app and sign in to its account, if it has one.
- Use the same Apple Account or Google Account that paid.
- Open the app’s Settings, Store or Account area.
- Tap Restore Purchases, Restore or the equivalent control.
- Wait for the transaction to synchronize, then restart the app if necessary.
- If the entitlement is still missing, give the developer your receipt or order number.
Apple’s terms specifically say consumable items such as virtual gems cannot be transferred between devices and may be downloadable only once: Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.

Uninstalling removes the interface, not the billing agreement. A subscription generally continues until it is canceled through the account and billing platform. Apple states that paid subscriptions automatically renew until canceled.

- iPhone or iPad: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
- Android: Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
If you deleted the app but are still being charged, inspect the active-subscription list immediately and cancel there. Labels can change with software versions, so use the platform’s current account controls rather than relying on the deleted app.
Why the app or purchase may be unavailable
It is in your history but cannot install
- The device or operating system is incompatible.
- The developer withdrew or discontinued the app.
- The app is no longer offered in your current country or region.
- The store listing or app architecture changed.
- The company or licensing arrangement ended.
Apple warns that content may no longer be available for redownload if it is removed from Apple’s services. A purchase made on one platform also does not automatically transfer to another; cross-platform access exists only when the developer provides its own account-based entitlement.

The app reinstalls but premium features are missing
Sign in to the same app account, confirm the store account, run Restore Purchases, and verify the transaction in your purchase history. If the store shows the purchase but the feature remains locked, contact the developer with the receipt.
Will reinstalling restore your data?
Purchase access and personal data use different systems. Cloud-synchronized notes, photos or game progress may return after you sign in. Files stored only on the device can be lost when the app is deleted. Data included in an iCloud, Google or device backup may require restoring that backup, while permissions, settings and offline content commonly reset or need to be downloaded again.

When a refund makes sense
Accidentally deleting an app is normally a reason to reinstall, not an automatic refund entitlement. Consider a refund when the app cannot be redownloaded despite a valid purchase, the paid functionality was not delivered, the charge was unauthorized, or the transaction otherwise meets the platform’s regional rules.
Apple
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in.
- Choose I’d like to, then Request a refund.
- Select a reason and the app, subscription or other item.
- Submit the request.
Apple says it generally provides an update within 24 to 48 hours, although an approved refund can take longer to reach the payment method. Eligibility varies by country or region. Details: support.apple.com/en-la/118223.
Google Play
Google says a refund may be available within 48 hours depending on the purchase details. After 48 hours, contact the developer about troubleshooting and possible refund options. Policies vary by product, payment method, location and timing; Google does not refund most purchases. If a paid-app refund is issued, access to that app is lost, and its stated policy generally allows a paid app or game to be returned only once. Prevent the next loss
- Keep store receipts and note which account made each purchase.
- Enable the app’s cloud sync or account login when offered.
- Back up the phone or tablet regularly.
- Review subscriptions in Apple or Google account settings, not just inside the app.
- Download important offline content again after reinstalling and verify that it is available.
