An app leaving the App Store does not affect everyone who has it in the same way. Whether you can keep using it, download it again, or recover what you paid for depends on why it was removed, whether it was removed from sale in one country or from the store entirely, and which Apple Account you used to buy it.
The short answer
If an app is removed, the installed copy may keep working, and people who bought it may be able to download it again from their purchase history. Neither outcome is guaranteed in every case. The reason for removal decides most of the answer, so start there.

Start by identifying which situation you are in
Removed from sale by the developer or in one region
When an app is removed from sale in a country or region, it stops appearing in search and can no longer be purchased there. Existing customers in that region are not necessarily cut off. Apple’s developer guidance says they may redownload the app from purchase history as long as the necessary contract remains active. That is a condition, not a promise that every removed app stays downloadable.

Apple can remove an app after App Review or after a later action. The reasons are covered below. The effect on existing users varies. Apple’s review guidance describes some serious safety or legal cases as immediate removals, so do not assume an app will remain usable or downloadable simply because it was installed earlier.

Many people who think an app was removed are actually looking in the wrong account or device context. Before you assume the app is gone, check the account and device points in the next section.
Can I still use an app that Apple removed?
For apps removed under Apple’s App Store Improvements process, yes. Apple says the app “will remain fully functional for current users.” That statement applies to that process. It does not mean every removal leaves the installed app working.

Even when the app opens, its online features are a separate matter. Whether the app’s servers, accounts, subscriptions, or cloud features keep working depends on the developer. Apple’s published guidance does not establish how that will go for any particular app, so check the developer’s own notices.
Can I redownload an app that was removed?
Start with the Apple Account that originally bought or downloaded the app.

- Sign in to the right account. On an iPhone or iPad, open the App Store app, tap your profile picture at the top right, and check which account is shown. Apps bought with a different Apple Account do not appear under the current one.
- Open Purchased. Tap your profile picture and choose Purchased. Search for the app by name.
- Check for hidden purchases. A hidden item will not appear in the normal list. Unhide it through your account’s purchase settings, then look again.
- Confirm device compatibility. An app that needs a newer version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS may appear as incompatible with your device, even if you bought it before.
- Attempt the download. Apple says purchased items can generally be redownloaded without paying again. If the app is listed but will not download, use Apple’s support process to report the problem.
What happens to paid features and in-app purchases?
Keep three things separate: access to the app itself, restoring a purchase, and the developer’s continued service.
- Non-consumable in-app purchases may be restorable inside the app, according to Apple. Use the app’s restore option if it offers one.
- Consumable purchases, such as game currency or hints, cannot be restored.
- Charged but not restored: if you were charged for an eligible purchase and cannot restore it, Apple directs you to contact the app developer.
- Subscriptions and online services: not established. Having the app installed does not confirm that the service it unlocks will continue.
Why apps get removed
Review and policy removals
Apple’s review guidance says apps may be removed for failing to follow the App Review Guidelines, the Apple Developer Program License Agreement, or applicable law. Examples in that guidance include hidden or changed behavior, user reports, and legal, intellectual-property, or government takedown requests.

App Store Improvements removals
The App Store Improvements process evaluates apps that no longer function as intended, fail current review guidance, or are outdated. Under that process, an app that has not been updated in the last three years and had no or extremely few downloads in a rolling 12-month period can receive a notice that it may be removed. These thresholds describe Apple’s policy. They are not a measured rate of removals, and Apple’s guidance does not publish how many apps have been affected.
Can the developer bring the app back?
After an App Store Improvements removal
Apple asks the developer to submit an update within 90 days of the notice. Apple also says: “There is no time limit in which a developer can submit an app after it has been removed from the App Store, as long as the developer still has an active membership in the Apple Developer Program.” Apps that crash on launch may be removed immediately, so a crash fix is the first priority.

After a review removal
Restoration depends on the issue. Serious safety or legal cases can be immediate and may not lead to a return. If an app’s core concept is fundamentally incompatible with the guidelines, it may not come back as the same app. No general reinstatement timeline exists for review removals, so any estimate for a specific app needs evidence about that app.
