A mechanical breakdown after a proper start is treated differently. The surfaced 2025 NHRA rulebook assigns a 28-second qualifying time to a contestant who starts and stages properly, receives the starter’s signal, then breaks before finishing. That breakdown provision is from the 2025 edition; NHRA lists a 2026 rulebook, so check its current text or ask event officials before relying on the older wording at a 2026 event.
What a red-light means in qualifying
A red-light, or foul start, occurs when a vehicle leaves the starting line before the green light. NHRA’s glossary says a red-light in qualifying has no impact on the racer’s attempt: the time still counts toward qualifying for the event. It is not a penalty that automatically wipes out the time.

That differs from eliminations. In an elimination round, a foul start normally eliminates the racer who leaves early, unless the opponent commits a worse infraction. The qualifying rule should not be applied to a head-to-head elimination race.

The 2025 NHRA rulebook provides a specific outcome for a contestant who properly starts and stages, receives the starter’s signal, but breaks before completing the run: the official qualifying time is 28 seconds, and the attempt counts as valid. This is a rulebook-prescribed time, not the racer’s measured elapsed time for a completed run.

The clause also addresses multiple breakdowns. If more than one contestant breaks before finishing and there are not enough open ladder positions, insertion begins with the contestant whose qualifying attempt happened first.
Why the start sequence matters
NHRA’s Christmas Tree is the electronic starting device. Pre-stage and stage indicators show a car’s position at the line, while the start system and trackside beams trigger timing independently for each lane. The breakdown provision depends on the racer having started and staged properly and received the starter’s signal; it does not describe every situation in which a car fails to make a run.

NHRA’s 2024 rulebook says an official qualifying attempt requires the vehicle to self-start and self-stage, and says leaving before the start system is activated disqualifies the time for that run. Because that wording is from the 2024 edition, check the current rulebook for the event rather than assuming the same clause remains unchanged.

Which rulebook applies at a current event?
NHRA lists a 2026 rulebook and has reported that its digital version was updated through amendments issued July 14, 2026. The detailed breakdown clause described above was surfaced in the 2025 rulebook, not verified in the available 2026 text. For a current event, consult the applicable live rulebook or ask race officials whether the 28-second clause and related procedures are unchanged.

These rules are NHRA-specific. Another sanctioning body or a local track may define red-lights, incomplete runs, or qualifying attempts differently, so confirm that event’s own rules.
