The leak was real, but the name was not final. January 2025 shipping-record coverage mentioned “SNAPDRAGON X2 ULTRA PREMIUM 12CH X20,” possibly part number X2-000-096. Qualcomm never confirmed that as a retail product. On September 24, 2025, it announced the official successor branding: Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme and Snapdragon X2 Elite. Qualcomm’s product pages place X2 systems in the 2026 Windows PC cycle, not as a 2025 retail launch.
What the January 2025 leak actually showed
The original report came from third-party shipping or import-export database sightings attributed to hardware leaker Everest (@Olrak29_), not from Qualcomm. Coverage reproduced a database description containing “SNAPDRAGON X2 ULTRA PREMIUM,” “12CH” and “X20.” Notebookcheck also reported a possible part number, X2-000-096.

A logistics record can show that a chip, engineering sample or test package was referenced in a shipment. It cannot, by itself, establish a finished specification, a consumer name or a launch date. The reports did not provide confirmed clock speeds, a final GPU configuration, validated performance, an OEM product or an official release schedule. Project Glymur and SC8480XP: related, but not officially mapped
Later reporting associated Qualcomm’s internal development effort, Project Glymur, with the engineering platform identifier SC8480XP. Tom’s Hardware described testing of a possible 18-core X2-class processor, including higher-power configurations, integrated memory and storage observations. Those reports make a connection to the “Ultra Premium” sighting plausible, but Qualcomm did not publicly confirm that Project Glymur, SC8480XP, X2-000-096 and a particular retail chip were exactly the same product.

The distinction matters: internal codenames and engineering identifiers can survive several revisions or be reused across configurations before a commercial name is selected.
Was it a 12-core or 18-core processor?
“12CH” is ambiguous. It should not be translated automatically into “12 cores.” The string may refer to channels or another database field, and the original entry did not define it.
Subsequent reporting tied SC8480XP testing to 18 Oryon CPU cores, compared with up to 12 cores in the first-generation Snapdragon X Elite. Qualcomm’s eventual X2 Elite Extreme announcement confirms an 18-core-class flagship. That alignment supports the idea that the leak pointed toward the high-end X2 family, but it does not prove that the January record itself was an 18-core retail chip.
Why liquid cooling and high-power tests fueled desktop speculation
Reports described test configurations using a 120 mm all-in-one liquid cooler and both “high-TDP” and “standard-TDP” modes. Some test packages reportedly included on-package or integrated memory and storage. Those details suggested experimentation beyond a typical thin laptop and raised the possibility of a desktop, workstation or mini-PC design.
They did not prove a socketed desktop processor, a discrete desktop motherboard platform or a guaranteed desktop launch. Cooling hardware is evidence of a test setup, not a product category. Qualcomm’s finished public positioning centers on Windows 11 PCs, including premium laptops; any desktop availability must be established by a specific OEM system.
What Qualcomm officially announced on September 24, 2025
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme and Snapdragon X2 Elite at Snapdragon Summit on September 24, 2025. The company identifies the family’s major features as:
- Third-generation Qualcomm Oryon CPU technology.
- Up to 18 CPU cores in the X2 Elite Extreme.
- An Adreno GPU architecture.
- An integrated Hexagon NPU rated at up to 80 TOPS.
- Support for premium Windows 11 PCs and Copilot+ PC experiences.
- Performance-per-watt and multi-day-battery positioning.
Qualcomm claims that the X2 Elite Extreme can deliver up to 75% faster CPU performance than “the competition” at the same power. That is a vendor claim from Qualcomm’s reference-design comparisons, not an independent guarantee for every retail laptop. The company’s announcement and specifications are available in its press release, features brief and product brief.

How the timeline changed
- January 28, 2025: Shipping-record coverage reported the “Ultra Premium” wording and related fields.
- March 2–4, 2025: Further reports linked Project Glymur and SC8480XP with possible 18-core and higher-power testing.
- September 24, 2025: Qualcomm announced the X2 Elite Extreme and X2 Elite names and specifications.
- Late 2025: Qualcomm and reviewers began publishing reference-design and preview information.
- 2026: Qualcomm’s laptop pages list X2-powered Windows systems and the commercial device cycle.
Thus, “2025 release” conflated an announcement year with the arrival of retail computers. A chip can be announced, sampled to partners and reviewed before customers can buy a finished laptop.

What performance information is safe to use
Confirmed by Qualcomm
- Up to 18 CPU cores for X2 Elite Extreme.
- Up to 80 TOPS of NPU performance.
- Third-generation Oryon CPU architecture.
- Windows 11 and Copilot+ PC positioning.
- Qualcomm’s own same-power and performance-per-watt claims.
Still configuration-dependent
Reference systems, firmware, memory, cooling and power limits can materially change results. Preview benchmark coverage, such as Notebookcheck’s overview, should be read as early or reference-design evidence rather than a guarantee for every retail model.
Not established by the leak
- Exact TDP, clock speeds or battery life.
- Gaming performance or superiority over Apple, AMD or Intel in all workloads.
- A discrete-GPU solution, universal external-GPU support or a particular OEM partner.
- Guaranteed 32 GB, 48 GB or 64 GB memory configurations.
- A final price or a standalone boxed processor.
What buyers should check before choosing an X2 system
Application and driver compatibility
Native ARM64 applications are the safest choice. Windows can emulate many x86 and x64 programs, but performance and compatibility vary. Check specialized drivers, VPN clients, plug-ins, anti-cheat systems, older utilities and peripherals individually. Windows compatibility also does not establish equivalent Linux support.
Graphics and workload needs
The integrated GPU is aimed at premium PC graphics and AI workloads, but an X2 laptop is not automatically the right choice for CUDA software, VR, demanding AAA gaming or professional 3D rendering. A system with a discrete AMD or NVIDIA GPU may be more suitable, at the cost of weight, noise and battery life.

Integrated or package-mounted memory can improve compactness and efficiency while limiting upgrades. Select capacity carefully because it is generally not user-replaceable. Treat leaked memory observations as test-package details, not guaranteed retail options.
Battery and sustained performance
Qualcomm’s efficiency claims do not determine a laptop’s actual endurance. Display resolution, battery size, cooling, modem activity, firmware and the OEM’s power limits all matter. Thin systems may be quieter and more efficient; higher-power designs may sustain more performance but reduce those advantages.
Current Qualcomm directories for prospective systems are the Snapdragon laptop page and consumer laptop directory. For a named model, verify its exact processor, memory, drivers, warranty and software support rather than relying on the leaked “Ultra Premium” label.
Bottom line
The January 2025 shipping sighting was a genuine clue that Qualcomm was developing a more powerful second-generation Snapdragon X platform. It did not confirm a retail chip called Snapdragon X2 Ultra Premium, a 12-core design or a 2025 customer launch. Qualcomm’s official answer arrived on September 24, 2025: the Snapdragon X2 Elite family, led by the 18-core-class X2 Elite Extreme, with systems positioned for 2026. For buyers, the processor’s official model, application compatibility, memory design, GPU capability and device-specific testing matter far more than the leaked name.
