She sustained minor abrasions. The operator briefly paused the trial, then resumed it. The research project itself ended in 2021.
What happened in Seestadt Aspern?
ORF reported that the incident took place at about 9:30 a.m. on July 18, 2019, on Ilse-Arlt-Straße near the Seestadt U2 station. Its account said a woman, about 30 years old, came into contact with the side of one of Wiener Linien’s autonomous electric shuttles. The report described her injuries as minor abrasions. ORF Wien’s report of July 18, 2019 said eyewitnesses described her as wearing headphones and looking at her phone. Those were eyewitness descriptions, not independently established findings about fault.

Did the bus hit the pedestrian?
The wording matters: ORF described the woman as walking into the side of the bus, while later coverage said she ran into or collided with it. The available reports do not establish that the shuttle struck her, nor do they determine legal responsibility. It is most accurate to describe this as a pedestrian contacting the side of the shuttle.
What did the operator say the shuttle did?
In a follow-up report, VIENNA.AT/APA relayed Wiener Linien’s account that the shuttle’s system detected the woman as a potential obstacle, sounded a warning, and began braking when she continued. A Wiener Linien spokesperson said 1.6 seconds elapsed between detection and stopping, and that the shuttle was travelling at no more than 12 km/h. These figures are the operator’s explanation as reported in July 2019, not an independently published accident reconstruction. VIENNA.AT/APA’s follow-up on the shuttle’s return to service reported that one shuttle resumed operation after the pause.

Why was the service paused, and when did it resume?
Wiener Linien temporarily stopped passenger operations while the circumstances were examined, including recorded data reviewed with the vehicle manufacturer. The follow-up report said limited operation restarted with one shuttle. That temporary pause was separate from the eventual end of the research project.
What was the Vienna shuttle trial?
The incident involved auto.Bus-Seestadt, a research project testing two small electric autonomous buses in passenger service near Seestadt station. Wiener Linien describes a route of roughly two kilometres and a three-year project that ended on June 30, 2021. The vehicles used 2D and 3D LiDAR along with satellite positioning. An onboard operator could take manual control to steer around persistent obstacles. Wiener Linien’s project page describes the technology, operating role and project dates.

Are the driverless buses in Vienna still running?
No. The Seestadt buses belonged to a research trial, not an ongoing Vienna bus route. Wiener Linien says the project ended on June 30, 2021. This incident and the trial’s limited operating conditions do not, by themselves, establish how safe autonomous buses are generally; the cited reports provide no broader collision-rate statistics or comparative safety assessment.
