Google says publishers should manually check every AI-generated page for accuracy and trustworthiness before it goes live—including the title, meta description, structured data and image alt text that may appear in Search. This is an editorial quality instruction, not a newly announced penalty for using AI: Google’s guidance does not say AI-written content is automatically against its policies or guarantee a ranking outcome.
What Google is asking publishers to do
Google Search Central’s current guidance states: “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.” The instruction applies to AI-generated material on a publisher’s website, and the review should cover more than the main article text.

Google names four kinds of Search-visible metadata to check as well:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Title elements: confirm the title accurately describes the page and does not introduce unsupported claims.
- Meta descriptions: verify their summaries and factual details against the page.
- Structured data: ensure the markup accurately describes the content and meets the general and relevant Search feature guidelines; validate it before publication.
- Image alt text: check that descriptions match the image and do not invent details.
Google’s explanation is that generative models do not retrieve facts; they predict likely word sequences from training data. That can produce inaccurate statements, sometimes called hallucinations. Fluent prose is not evidence that a claim is true.

The current official guidance establishes Google’s instruction, but the page does not identify when this exact sentence was added. It should be treated as current guidance, not assigned an unverified announcement date.
What the guidance does—and does not—mean
The practical requirement is human editorial review, not a prohibition on AI assistance. Google emphasizes accuracy, quality and relevance, and says information about how a piece was created can give readers useful context. It does not prescribe a universal disclosure format in this guidance.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Nor does the page say that using AI by itself violates Search policy or triggers an automatic ranking penalty. Its warning is about publishing inaccurate or low-value material. Google says generating many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse spam policy; that is different from saying that all AI-assisted pages are prohibited.
Google’s 15 May 2026 Search Central resource announcement says that valuable, unique, non-commodity content matters for generative-AI Search experiences and that established SEO best practices remain foundational. Fact-checking therefore belongs within ordinary editorial quality work; it is not a substitute for usefulness or original value.
A practical review process before publication
The steps below translate Google’s instruction into an editorial workflow. They are practical recommendations, not a checklist prescribed verbatim by Google.
- Separate draft from verified copy. Treat AI output as draft material. Assign a human editor responsibility for verifying it before publication.
- Check claims one by one. Verify names, dates, figures, quotations and other consequential factual statements against reliable evidence, preferably primary sources. Open every AI-suggested citation and link; confirm that the source exists and actually supports the claim.
- Audit the page’s metadata independently. Review its title element, meta description, structured data and image alt text rather than assuming they are accurate because the article body has been checked.
- Validate structured data. Confirm that the markup matches the page and follows the relevant general and feature-specific guidance.
- Give readers context where useful. Keep an internal record of how AI contributed, and explain that process to readers when it helps them understand the work. Google’s guidance does not require one standard disclosure statement.
- Ask whether the page adds value. Do not use automation simply to multiply pages. Make sure each page serves a real reader need with useful, relevant material.
Google’s guidance and the UK publisher requirement are different
A separate UK regulatory development concerns Google’s use of publishers’ content in generative Search features. It is not the same as Google’s general instruction to fact-check a publisher’s own AI-generated material.

| Google’s AI-content guidance | A publisher’s own AI-generated website content and Search-visible metadata | Publishers should manually review generated material for accuracy and trustworthiness; Google also emphasizes quality, value and context. | General Google Search guidance; no geographic limitation is stated on the cited page. |
| CMA publisher conduct requirement | Google’s use and presentation of publisher Search content in generative AI features | Google must provide publisher controls, clear information and engagement metrics, along with accurate attribution and a clear way for users to access publisher content. | Google’s general Search services in the UK. |
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) imposed the UK conduct requirement on 3 June 2026. Its GOV.UK record was still listed as open when last updated on 4 August 2026. The requirement addresses effective publisher controls over Search content used in generative AI, understandable information about its use, detailed user-engagement metrics, clear and accurate attribution, and access to the content.

The CMA says it will oversee implementation. These are UK-specific measures and should not be read as controls already fully implemented worldwide. Manually checking a publisher’s own AI draft does not satisfy the separate obligations placed on Google.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What publishers can conclude
For a publisher, the immediate editorial implication is straightforward: do not publish AI-generated factual material—or its Search-facing metadata—without human verification. Google’s documentation supports that standard, while the UK CMA requirement addresses a different question: how Google uses and presents publisher content in generative Search. Neither source establishes a quantified effect of fact-checking on rankings, traffic, revenue or reader trust.
