It is not a separate device or an app you open to make augmented-reality content: supported apps use it to understand the phone’s surroundings and place digital objects in the camera view. Google updates the service separately through Google Play. Google’s ARCore setup documentation explains that this keeps AR features from needing to be bundled into every app.
What the service does
ARCore is Google’s platform for augmented reality on compatible devices; Google Play Services for AR is the separately maintained Android service that supplies its features. An app built with an ARCore SDK communicates with that service rather than carrying all AR functionality inside the app itself.

Google describes three core ARCore capabilities:
- Motion tracking: estimates how the phone moves through space.
- Environmental understanding: helps an app interpret the real-world scene and surfaces.
- Light estimation: estimates lighting conditions so virtual objects can appear more consistent with their surroundings.
The app uses these capabilities to position and render virtual content in the camera view. The service supports the experience; it does not create or display an AR experience by itself.

AR Required apps
An AR Required app cannot function without ARCore. Google Play makes this type of app available only on supported devices and automatically installs or updates Google Play Services for AR when the app is installed or updated. The app must still check the service at runtime, because it may have become outdated or been manually removed.
AR Optional apps
An AR Optional app has useful features that do not require ARCore. It can be available through normal listing procedures, and Google Play does not automatically install or update the AR service for it. Instead, the app checks device support and may request installation when you try to use an AR feature.

That is why installing an app does not always install the AR service immediately. A later prompt can also mean the service needs an update, or that it is no longer installed.

Meeting Android’s minimum version is not enough by itself. Google’s supported-device list is model-specific: listed Android devices must have originally shipped with Google Play Store and meet the Android version shown for that model. If no version is listed, Google says Android 7.0 or later is required. Check the current ARCore supported-device list for your exact model and any capability notes.

Google’s certification process considers device characteristics such as the camera, sensors, design, and CPU performance, which affect whether AR calculations can run effectively in real time. A recent Android phone is not automatically supported; device certification and the operating-system requirement are separate checks.
What to do when an app says AR is unavailable
- Check the exact phone model. Look it up in Google’s supported-device list rather than relying only on the Android version.
- Check the service state. If the app offers an install or update prompt, follow it through Google Play on an Android device in a supported region. The prompt may appear at installation or when you enter an optional AR feature.
- Reopen the AR feature. Apps check support and service status at runtime, so retry after installation or updating.
- Distinguish unsupported from missing or outdated. If the model is not supported, installing the service alone will not establish ARCore support. If the model is supported but the app still cannot use AR, its runtime check may be detecting a service or compatibility issue.
Platform, region, and privacy notes
This definition concerns Google Play Services for AR on Android. Google documents a separate distribution context in China, where supported devices may obtain the service through local app stores. Its supported-device documentation also lists iOS devices for certain ARCore experiences; that does not make this Android service an iOS component. See Google’s supported-device documentation for platform and model details.

AR apps use camera-based capabilities and must meet Google’s user privacy requirements for ARCore. Camera access and the way scene data is handled depend on the app and its permissions; review the app’s permission request and privacy information before enabling access. Google provides developer guidance in its ARCore setup documentation.
