HiLight is a ring of color-coded LEDs around the camera flash on the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. With the phone face down, it can show certain Gemini activity and signal calls from favorite contacts. Google has also announced favorite-contact message alerts as a future addition, but has not given a release date.
What HiLight does on Pixel 11 Pro
Google describes HiLight as ambient, color-coded LEDs built around the camera flash—not a separate accessory or a general-purpose notification light. The idea is to provide a glanceable visual cue while the phone is face down, without lighting up the display. Google’s HiLight explainer describes the light arrangement; Google’s Pixel 11 announcement outlines the launch uses.

Gemini activity cues
HiLight can use different patterns to indicate when Gemini is listening, thinking or responding. Google says users can enable or disable Gemini cues separately from call alerts in HiLight settings. Google Pixel Help documents the controls.

For incoming calls from selected favorite contacts, the LEDs can glow in assigned colors. Google Help says this works with Phone by Google and WhatsApp. It requires current Contacts app software and favorite contacts configured; it is not documented as support for calls from every app.

That announcement describes a future capability, not a feature documented as available at launch, and gives no release date. 9to5Google’s August 2026 launch coverage likewise reported that contact-color message support was not available at launch and had no announced timing. Check current Pixel Help or update notes for any later change.

- Open Settings > System > HiLight.
- Choose whether to enable Gemini activity cues and favorite-contact call alerts; Google documents them as separate controls.
- For contact calls, make sure the Contacts app is current and the people you want to identify are set as favorites.
- If HiLight does not show for an incoming call, check whether flash notifications are enabled. Google says flash notifications prevent HiLight from displaying for incoming calls.
- Also check whether Flip to Shhh, Bedtime or Do Not Disturb is affecting whether the LEDs glow.
HiLight Studio is a third-party workaround
TechRadar reported on August 21, 2026 that an app called HiLight Studio could extend LED alerts to other apps and customize colors or patterns. Its reported setup involved downloading the app from GitHub, installing Shizuku, granting access through the setup flow and manually restarting HiLight Studio after a phone reboot. TechRadar also noted that the app was not distributed through Google Play at the time and described uncertainty around its development. Read TechRadar’s report.

HiLight is a built-in feature of specified Pixel 11 Pro models. Google’s documentation does not say a case enables or improves it, nor does it establish a separate HiLight accessory. A case should not be treated as a way to add this feature to another phone.
