“General failure reading drive X:” is a generic device-error message used by legacy DOS-era software. In Microsoft’s MS-DOS 3.20 reference, it is classified simply as “Device error”—not as proof that a particular drive or component has failed. “X” is the drive letter shown in the message, such as A: or C:.
What the error does—and does not—tell you
The wording reports that a read operation failed, but it does not identify the cause. A DOS troubleshooting guide describes general failure as a catchall for errors that are not covered by a more specific message, and notes that it can involve drives or other devices. The phrase is associated with legacy DOS-era systems; a similar-looking message in a current operating system should not automatically be diagnosed using DOS-era explanations.

Possible causes depend on the drive and system
- Disk or format: The disk may be unformatted or formatted for an operating system other than DOS.
- Floppy diskette: The media may be physically bad.
- Floppy-drive hardware: The read/write head may be dirty or misaligned, or a data or control cable may be faulty.
- Another device error: The device may have returned an error that DOS does not classify more specifically.
- Older software conflict: A DOS troubleshooting guide notes that a SHARE.EXE file-sharing conflict could trigger a general failure message in some older programs. This is version- and program-dependent, not a general explanation for present-day storage errors.
IBM also documented a floppy-drive error involving an EMC clip on particular Netfinity 3500 Type 8644 and IntelliStation M Pro Type 6898 configurations. Its guidance applies to those specified systems, not to computers generally.
What to check before attempting a repair
- Record the exact message and drive letter. Note the operating system and whether the target is a floppy diskette, another removable disk, or a fixed disk.
- For a legacy floppy-drive problem, check the media first. If available, try a known-good diskette and confirm that its format is compatible with the system. A replacement diskette can help test the media, but it will not fix a faulty drive.
- If the problem continues, consider the drive and connection. Dirty or misaligned heads and faulty cabling are documented possible causes for floppy-drive errors; the message alone cannot determine which applies.
- Use manufacturer guidance only for the hardware it names. If the machine is one of the IBM models and configurations covered by the EMC-clip notice, follow that notice’s instructions rather than applying its remedy to another computer.
Protect data before formatting or changing hardware
Formatting is not a safe first response when the disk may contain data you need. A historical manual recommends formatting an unformatted disk or partition in its context, but that does not address data recovery. If important files are at risk, avoid formatting or other potentially destructive changes until you have considered recovery options appropriate to the operating system and device.

The available documentation is historical and focused on DOS and legacy floppy systems. It does not establish a universal repair sequence for modern storage devices or show that this message, by itself, means a contemporary hard drive has failed.
