Gemini Live can use the camera view or the full device screen you choose to share, along with the audio conversation, to respond. Muting Live only mutes your microphone; it does not stop camera or screen sharing. Google’s documentation does not specify how often visual frames are sampled, so it does not establish that Gemini sees every instant or can interpret every on-screen detail.
What Gemini Live sees when you share your camera or screen
Camera sharing
In a Live chat, tapping the camera control starts or stops camera sharing. A switch-camera control lets you move between the front and rear cameras. Google describes this as showing Gemini what you see; its help page does not specify the video frame rate or how frequently images are sampled. Google’s Android Gemini Live instructions therefore do not support a claim that Gemini continuously sees every moment or reliably recognizes everything in view.

Screen sharing
On Android, Google says, “When you share your screen, your full screen is shared with Gemini.” That is broader than sharing only the app currently open: treat anything visible on the device screen as potentially included. To start screen sharing, enable Gemini Live notifications, then start sharing from the Live screen or the “Share screen with Live” shortcut and follow the device prompts. You can stop sharing in Gemini or from the Android screen-sharing notification card. Google’s instructions are Android-specific; do not assume the same steps apply on iOS.

Does muting Gemini Live stop it from seeing you?
No. Google says that when a Live chat is muted, the device microphone is muted but video or screen sharing continues. If you want to stop visual sharing, use the camera or screen-sharing control rather than relying on mute.

When sharing stops automatically
- Camera: Sharing turns off if Live is put on hold, you leave the Gemini mobile app, or the screen locks. Resuming Live after putting it on hold turns camera sharing back on; returning to the app after leaving it or unlocking the screen does not automatically restart sharing.
- Screen: Sharing stops if Live is put on hold or the screen locks. It does not resume automatically when Live continues or the device is unlocked; share the screen again if you want to continue.

What Gemini Live hears, and how Google handles shared data
Live uses the audio conversation to respond. Google distinguishes the transcript of a conversation from its audio, video, and screen-share recordings. Those data types have different settings: a statement that shared media is not used for service improvement by default does not mean Google never processes it or that it is never stored.

Keep Activity and Live chat storage
For personal accounts, Google says Keep Activity controls whether Live transcripts and shared content can be stored in Gemini Apps Activity. With Keep Activity on, transcripts are used to improve Google services, including AI models. With it off, Google says Live chats remain stored in the Google Account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service and process feedback; those chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. This is Google’s stated policy for Keep Activity off, not a general retention rule for every account or setting. Google’s Privacy Hub and activity management guidance describe these distinctions.

Separate improvement setting for audio, video, and screen shares
Google says, “Your Gemini Live audio, video and screenshares are not used to improve Google services by default.” The separate control for this use is off by default and requires Keep Activity to be on to enable it. If enabled, Google says recordings may be used to improve services, including training generative AI models, and some may be reviewed by human reviewers.

Turning that improvement control off applies to future Live audio, video, and screen shares, except when you send feedback. Google says those inputs are still used to respond to you and help keep Gemini safe. The transcript remains subject to Keep Activity, and the Gemini for Home setting is separate. Reviewing and deleting activity
You can review and delete Gemini Apps Activity. Google says deleting a Live chat activity also deletes its related audio, transcript, video, and screen shares. Work or school account settings may be controlled by an administrator, and the activity controls or retention duration may not be available to you. Google’s Android activity management page covers personal-account controls and this account-type caveat.

Guided Vision: camera-based spoken assistance on Android
Guided Vision is an Android Gemini Live option that uses camera sharing to provide audio descriptions and real-time assistance. Google gives examples such as reading small print on food labels, distinguishing colors, dealing with low-lit menus, and finding household objects; it can also give spoken directions for reframing the camera. Before sharing a screen or camera
- Check what is visible before starting: Android screen sharing includes the full screen, not just the current app.
- Use the camera or screen control to end visual sharing; microphone mute does not do it.
- Consider whether a conversation transcript or shared content may be retained under your account’s Keep Activity settings.
- Google advises: “Please respect others’ privacy and ask permission before you record or include them in a Live chat.” Google’s Privacy Hub includes this guidance.
