Full Disk Access (FDA) is a broad macOS privacy permission that can put files, Mail, Messages and Safari browsing history within an app’s reach. Apple says it largely sidesteps ordinary privacy controls so backup apps can work. That is a significant capability, not proof that an app collects or uploads everything it could access.
What can an app with Full Disk Access read?
Apple warns that granting FDA may expose information such as files, mail, messages and browsing history. The permission is unusually broad, and information about people who communicate with you may be among the material at risk. The exact data available can depend on the app, the macOS version and the state of the protected data; Apple’s examples are not a guarantee that every item is always readable.

Apple describes FDA as largely sidestepping privacy controls to let backup apps function. Its October 2, 2026 announcement also warns that some developers use the permission in ways that could expose information without users’ full understanding. This describes what the access could make possible, not evidence that every app with FDA misuses it.

That session describes Catalina-era behavior, so its examples should not be treated as a current, exhaustive list of accessible files.

Why might an app need it?
Apple identifies backup apps as a legitimate reason for FDA: backing up a Mac may require access to data that ordinary privacy controls protect. A disk or backup utility may therefore ask for broad access to do its job. Whether a particular app needs that scope depends on what it does; check the app’s purpose and developer before approving the request.
What Full Disk Access does not do
It does not grant itself
The user must approve FDA in macOS settings. An app cannot obtain the permission automatically just by including an entitlement or writing code that requests it. Apple documents this user-grant requirement in Accessing files from the macOS App Sandbox.

It does not decrypt a FileVault-protected volume
FDA does not replace valid login credentials or a recovery key. Apple says a FileVault-encrypted volume remains protected from unauthorized access without those credentials, even if its physical storage is removed and connected to another computer. This is a limit on claims that FDA alone unlocks a disk; it is not a complete account of every interaction between FDA, an active user session and macOS protections.

Apple’s developer documentation notes that data-protection classes can prevent an app from opening a file—for example, a file with complete protection while the device is locked. Access can therefore depend on the file’s protection class and device state.

It does not include every other privacy permission
macOS controls some capabilities separately. FDA is not a blanket grant of permissions such as accessibility or automation access; those have their own controls. Apple’s WWDC19 explanation is useful for understanding this distinction, though its operating-system examples are historical.
It does not establish what happens to passwords
Apple’s cited material warns about exposure of files and browsing history but does not establish a blanket rule for Safari passwords or Keychain contents. Do not infer from browsing-history access alone that every saved credential is readable.

How to review or revoke Full Disk Access
Apple lists different settings paths depending on your macOS version:

- macOS 13 or later: Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy.
- macOS 12 or earlier: Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy.
In the Full Disk Access controls, review the apps that have been added. If you no longer want an app to have this access, remove or turn off its grant there. Apple’s guide says apps that require full-storage access must be explicitly added. The paths and guidance are in Apple Platform Security’s Controlling app access to files in macOS.

What Apple says is changing
On October 2, 2026, Apple announced plans for additional controls requiring users to take very explicit action when choosing to grant FDA. The announcement does not specify when those controls will arrive or how the final implementation will work. Until Apple provides those details, treat this as an announced direction rather than a feature already available in a particular macOS release.
