When and where was Alpha Tau Omega founded?
Alpha Tau Omega dates its founding to September 11, 1865, at Virginia Military Institute. The fraternity names Otis Allan Glazebrook, Erskine Mayo Ross, and Alfred Marshall as its founders. ATO’s history says Glazebrook invited Ross and Marshall to his home at 114 East Clay Street in Richmond, Virginia, and read them a constitution he had written.

ATO presents its founding as an effort to build brotherhood and reconciliation in a country divided by the Civil War. That is the fraternity’s own account of its historical purpose. Its homepage attributes an 1880 statement to Glazebrook that describes a brotherhood meant to know “no North, no South, no East, no West,” and to promote morals and merit rather than politics and partisanship. What does ATO say it stands for today?
ATO describes its aims in terms of leadership development, brotherhood, scholarship, character, and service. Its joining information also highlights friendship, networking, chapter participation, and member education. What do ATO’s symbols mean?
